THE TAKE

A crucial Group C with major Top 16 implications takes place in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday when Partizan Igokea hosts Chorale Roanne. The two teams enter the game tied for fifth place – the last spot that leads to an automatic spot in the next stage – with 3-5 records. The game at Partizan’s usually rowdy Pionir Arena will have a bizarre atmosphere as the club has been ordered to play the game behind closed doors. After a red-hot start to the season, Partizan has cooled off, losing three in a row, including a 26-point thumping at the hands of Barcelona last week. Not surprisingly, star center Nikola Pekovic has seen a drop of in his game over those three, and he fouled out of each of them. Meanwhile Roanne has won its last two games, though it hasn’t won on the road since opening night. When the two teams first met in October, Pekovic converted a three-point play with 7.8 seconds remaining to lead Partizan to an 87-88 road win. Brion Rush and Marc Salyers scored 29 and 20 points, respectively, to pace Roanne in that game. That duo, along with playmaker Marc Antoine-Pellin, has become the key to the Roanne attack. With Salyers leading the Euroleague in scoring, Rush ranked fifth and Pellin atop the assists chart, the French champs’ attack is lethal. Naturally, the game will revolve in many ways around these star players. Roanne will send center Pape Badiane, the anchor of the team's defense, to try and stop Pekovic, who is averaging 26 points on 75% shooting and 8 rebounds in home games, in what could arguably be the most important head-to-head matchup. Partizan power forward Novica Velickovic leads the charge against Salyers, with Dusan Kecman, Milenko Tepic and Milt Palacio pushing the backcourt against Rush, Pellin and Pierric Poupet. Naturally, with so much attention being paid to the other spots, small forwards Adam Hess from Roanne and Cedomir Vitkovac could step up as well to play major roles. Partizan is a much bigger team, which is one of the reasons that it ranks second in the league in rebounding and in fouls drawn. Partizan head coach Dusko Vujosevic will need to find a way to keep Pekovic out of foul trouble and to use his team’s height to its advantage this week, while Roanne head coach Jean-Denys Choulet will look to use its speed to get in front. Also of importance will be how Partizan deals with a home game in front of empty stands. No team can be considered the favorite in this clash, in which both teams will give there all for a game that could ultimately make the difference between a spot in the Top 16 at end of the regular season.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
”We lost our last three Euroleague games, but basketball is like it is in the real life. It matters not how many times you are knocked down, but how many times you are back on your feet again. This is the only thing that I count. I do believe we are able to be back on our feet and beat Chorale Roanne. But we respect our opponent as we respect the fact that we shall play in an empty Pionir Arena. Last week in Barcelona we had 21 turnovers. If we managed to limit number of turnovers, we shall be closer to the victory on Wednesday.”

”The game with Chorale Roanne is the most important one. If we want to reach the Top 16, we must beat Roanne. Without our fans it is very hard, because the French champ has showed serious progress. I expect the battle under the boards with last week’s Eurloeague MVP Marc Salyers. I wish for our win and if he is MVP again… I don't care.”
Nikola Pekovic - Partizan Igokea Nikola Pekovic had another huge evening, including 7 points during a 12-1 fourth quarter run to lead Partizan Igokea to an 82-76 win over Chorale Roanne on Wednesday night at Pionir Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. Pekovic finished with 26 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for the Serbian champs, who stopped a three-game slide and improved to 4-5 in Group C. Moreover, Partizan swept the season series with Roanne, which could prove to be important in the event of tiebreakers later on as both sides eye the Top 16. Roanne, coming off back-to-back wins, dropped to 3-9. Playing in front of an empty arena due to disciplinary issues, Partizan fell behind early and trailed by as many as 17 in the first period. Partizan came back in the second period, but three straight threes to end the half put Roanne on top at halftime 40-51. The hosts got it close again in the third, but waited till the fourth to make their move, when Pekovic, aided by Milenko Tepic, used a 12-1 run to put Partizan ahead for good. Tepic finished with a season-high 18 and Novica Velickovic scored 14 for Partizan. Brion Rush led Roanne with 15, while Marc Salyers – who came into the game leading the Euroleague in scoring – finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Adam Hess also scored 14 and Pape Badiane had 10.

Tepic opened the scoring with a layup in front of a quiet court. The first few minutes saw the teams trade baskets before Rush and Marc-Antoine Pellin put the visitors ahead 6-11. Velickovic guarded Salyers and Badiane was on Pekovic as the main weapons in both teams were almost invisible in the first period. Pellin picked up 2 steals and Rush scored twice in the fast break as Roanne increased the lead to double figures. Then Salyers stepped up as the visitors increased their lead to 9-23. Badiane joined with 5 straight points and the score was 11-28. After 10 minutes, Roanne led 14-30.

Marc Salyers - Chorale RoannePartizan switched to zone, forcing the guests to call time out after an 8-0 run. Pekovic added a basket-plus-foul as Partizan cut the gap to 27-35. Velickovic with a triple and Pekovic inspired a 9-0 charge, though Roanne still led 40-41 with two minutes left in the period. Ron Hale, Pierrick Poupet and Hess struck with three straight bombs as the French champ finished first half up 40-51.

Partizan opened the second half with 5-0 run and much stronger defensive play. Vitkovac joined with a triple and after a 10-2 surge, Roanne’s lead was cut to 50-53. At that moment, the Partizan bench committed technical foul giving, which allowed Roanne the chance to take a breath. Hess was made it a 6-point gap as Roanne was slowing its pace. Uros Tripkovic hit from downtown, but on the defensive side he fouled Hess, who was shooting behind the arc. Hess missed 2 of 3 and the score was 60-64 at the end of the third period.

Milenko Tepic - Partizan IgokeaAfter Milt Palacio pushed Partizan with a three-point play and Tepic scored, the hosts had a 65-64 lead. Pellin struck with a bomb and William Soliman converted a second-chance basket as guests reestablished the lead via a 0-7 run. Tepic and Pekovic combined for 6 straight points to tie it at 71-71. Pekovic continued to terrorize the Roanne defense and soon Partizan had a slim lead. Now it was the visiting team that was running. But Tepic and Velickovic were cool handed at the penalty line and Partizan increased its lead to 80-74 with two minutes to go. Badiane made a last effort, blocking Pekovic's dunk attempt, but Palacio and Velickovic scored from the line for Partizan’s fourth victory of the season.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"It was a very hard game for us because we had no fans in the stands. I was hoping that my players would not have that much pressure but the lack of our fans gave Roanne wings in the opening minutes. I was not too worried with our huge deficit in the beginning, but about Roanne's 0-10 run in the final minute of the first half. This is a very important win in a very hard game. We now need two more wins to reach the Top 16."
CHOULET, JEAN-DENYS
Chorale Roanne
"I don't have anything in particular to say about tonight's game. Partizan played very good defense in the fourth quarter, especially guarding Marc Salyers."

Players

TEPIC, MILENKO
Partizan Igokea
"Roanne hit too many open shots in the first quarter and managed to get a 18-point lead. Our open arena was an additional problem. We had to get used to it and we played together in the second half. I have to say that Roanne is an extremely good team. We overcame a strange atmosphere in an empty arena to get an important win."
RUSH, BRION
Chorale Roanne
"We were contolling the game almost all the time but we lost control in the fourth quarter. I think that the key for Partizan was Nikola Pekovic's inside game. Now we have slim chances to make it to the Top 16 but we keeps our hopes alive. We are ready to fight in the next games."
