A critical Group A matchup with long-term implications on the race for Top 16 takes place at the S.Darius & S.Girenas Sports Center in Kaunas, Lithuania, on Thursday in Group A when Zalgiris hosts Virtus VidiVici Bologna. This season’s celebration of 50 Years of European Club Basketball will mark the game with a pregame ceremony, in which Zalgiris stars over the tears, Eurelijus Zukauskas, Rimas Kurtinaitis, Saulius Stombergas, Modestas Paulauskas and team president and former All-Euroleague center Arvydas Sabonis will be honored. Zalgiris is coming off a big win over Tau Ceramica last week, that saw the club climb to 3-4 and a tie for fifth place in the standings – the last spot that brings with it automatic passage to the next stage. The Euroleague’s all-time leading scorer, Marcus Brown, stood tall once again with 27 points, making 6 of 6 from downtown, to lead the Lithuanian champs. Zalgiris is undefeated this season at home, with Brown averaging 27.5 points on 81.2% three-point shooting and 2.5 steals in the last two victories. Brown is also 21 for 21 from the free-throw line this season. Meanwhile Bologna, which beat Zalgiris 81-75 on opening night behind Alan Anderson’s 28 points, enters the game at 2-5 and would overtake Zalgiris due to head-to-head tiebreaker with a win this week. Both teams have undergone changes since that game, with the addition of center Michael Bradley being the biggest change for Zalgiris, while Virtus has added Donnie McGrath and made Fabio DiBella the starting point guard. Zalgiris’s biggest strength this season has been its inside play, as the team leads the Euroleague in rebounding. Meanwhile, despite DeJuan Collins being ranked second in the league in assists, the team attack committee more turnovers than any other. On the other hand, Virtus has become so dependant on the play of its high-scoring wingers ability to create for themselves and to shoot from outside that it is ranked last in assists, second-bottom in two-point shooting and tied for fourth in turnovers. Nevertheless the game will hinge on how the trio of Delonte Holland and Dewarick Spencer, both among the league’s top 10 scorers, and Andersen are able to produce against Brown, Dainius Salenga and Jonas Maciulis. The evening began with a salute to former Zalgiris greats as part of Euroleague Basketball's season-long 50 Years of European Club Competitions celebration and the current players made the former heroes proud with a fine performance. Brown made 7 of 9 three-pointers and finished with 31 points to match his career high set nearly six years ago. Jonas Maciulis added 13 points, Michael Bradley 12, De Juan Collins scored 11 points and dished 8 assists and Paulius Jankunas finished with 10. Dewarick Spencer led Virtus with 22, Delonte Holland scored 15 and Andrea Crosariol posted 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Maciulis got Zalgiris going with a three-pointer, but Virtus reacted immediately and Alan Anderson drove inside to give the guests their first lead at 3-4. Brown matched him with nice penetration, but Fabio Di Bella silenced the crowd with bomb from downtown. Brown found his way for another basket and tied the score at 9-9. We are not very hyped about this victory because it’s not the last game of the tournament. We have to think and prepare for the next game. However victory was very important for us. Now we see in our future more opportunities. My players showed that they can play and they can play very strong. Our offense ran well because our defense was working out right tonight. I was not surprised by Brown’s performance because we knew he’s a terrific shooter."

PILLASTRINI, STEFANO Virtus VidiVici "It was an easy walk for Zalgiris. After such a game, all I can say that we weren't prepared to play on such a level. We looked like a rookie team. We have a lot of players that lack experience and there were moments that they just didn't know what to do. It's the first season in the Euroleague for many of them. We lost this game in the first half. Especially demoralizing were those incredible shots by Brown and Popovic. We played a bit better in the final quarter, but it was much too late for a comeback."

But it's easy to win the game when you have Marcus Brown in your lineup. He was amazing tonight and hit almost every single shot. If he will continue play like that, I'd rather stay on defense all the time because there is nothing to do on the offense when he plays like that. He was a real factor tonight."

I think our big guys played absolutely phenomenal. I am proud of them. We rebounded the ball extremely well. The good thing is that we still have room to improve.
