THE TAKE

Brose Baskets must beat undefeated Group F leader Spirou Basket to remain alive for the Eurocup Last 16. After losing the first two games by an average of 23.5 points, head coach Chris Fleming's Brose Baskets Bamberg lost just 64-62 at Spirou to fall to 0-3. The German club led for much of the game until a 15-0 Spirou run spanning the third and fourth quarters gave Charleroi control. Bamberg worked hard defensively to hold Spirou to just 35% shooting for the game, while hitting 41% itself. But Fleming's men caused just 9 turnovers and gave up the ball 20 times. And that was the difference. Guard Demond Greene knocked down 6 three-pointers in scoring a game-high 20 points and 7 rebounds, while forward Predrag Suput had 18 points and forward Eric Taylor added 12 points. But the rest of the team combined for just 12 points. While the effort at Charleroi was much better than the previous two games, Fleming knows his team has to step it up even further to win at home. Spirou Basket meanwhile improved to a perfect 3-0 with the home victory. A win at Bamberg combined with a Red Star victory would push head coach Drazen Anzulovic's side into the Last 16. Anzulovic had to be pleased with his team's strength to overcome a poor night in fighting back against a motivated Bamberg and then putting together the crucial 15-0 surge to decide the game. The Belgian champs handled the ball well against the Bamberg pressure with just 9 turnovers. And guard Matt Walsh knocked down 4 big three-pointers in scoring 18 points as the only player to score in double figures for Anzulovic. Guards Jerry Johnson and Jonathan Tabu each scored 9 points. Anzulovic can figure that the odd player will step up his game after an average performance in last week's victory. And if two players can do so, that could be well enough if Bamberg cannot build upon its improvements from Charleroi.

Jerry Johnson - Spirou BasketSpirou Basket booked its spot in the Eurocup Last 16 with a convincing 65-84 victory at Brose Baskets Bamberg to remain undefeated 4-0 in the Group F. The Belgian side used a 0-10 run to grab an early 2-16 advantage and then regained control in the second quarter with another 0-10 surge. From there, Charleroi out-lasted the undermanned Brose team, which dropped to 0-4 in the group. Jerry Johnson paced Spirou with 15 points while Dwayne Broyles and Matt Walsh both added 12 points and Justin Hamilton and Jonathan Tabu each tallied 10. Spirou out-rebounded Brose 33-22 in the victory. Brose was led by Predrag Suput’s 19 points. Jared Newson added 12 and Eric Taylor had 11 points in the loss.

Johnson scored the first basket on a floater. Brose guard Michael Jordan slipped on the next possession and had to leave the game with a shoulder injury and Johnson made a jumper at the other end. Taylor made Bamberg’s first basket to make it 2-4. Wes Wilkinson scored inside and then Broyles nailed a triple, followed by an inside lay-in by Jure Lalic. Broyles converted a three-point play and Johnson made two foul shots to complete the 0-10 run with a 2-16 lead. Taylor hit two foul shots to stop the bleeding but Hamilton knocked down a three-ball and the lead was back to 5-19. Suput and Beckham Wyrick hit jumpers to start a Brose comeback with Rivera’s driving lay-up making it 15-23. Rivera then went the length of the court undefended and laid it in for a 17-23 deficit after one period. With Brose big men Alexander Johnson and Tim Ohlbrecht unavailable, Dominik Schneider was forced to play and he was blocked by Andre Riddick and then Len Matela hit inside for Spirou. Newson knocked down a triple to bring Bamberg within 20-25 but Riddick abused Schneider in the paint with an inside lay-in. And back-to-back triples by Walsh and Tabu pushed the lead back to 20-33, forcing a Bamberg timeout. But some nice interior passing pushed the lead to 20-35 to complete another 0-10 run. Suput did his best to keep the hosts in the game with two foul shots and a tough inside basket to make it 24-37. And Robert Garrett’s triple after an unsportsmanlike foul had Bamberg within 28-37. Broyles hit a long deuce and was matched by Taylor’s falling away jumper. And Wyrick’s drive and jumper in the lane sent the teams into the break with Spirou ahead 32-42.

Johnson started the second half with a breakaway layup but was answered by a Suput lay-up and three-pointer to bring Brose within 37-44. And Suput’s jumper cut the margin to 39-45. Brose was unable to knock down the big three-pointers to get closer and Riddick converted a three-point play to make it 39-48. And Riddick threw down a thunder dunk for a 40-50 lead. Spirou continued to have an answer for every Brose attack with Broyles putting back an offensive rebound and Johnson nailing a triple to push the lead to 43-55. And Hamilton matched his teammate with a three-ball from the right corner for a 44-60 advantage. Jordan hit a free throw and a jumper to close off the third period with Spirou up 48-62. Suput hit inside to start the fourth before Tabu nailed a long ball and Walsh threw down a breakaway dunk to make it 50-67. And Walsh knocked down a long ball and the lead was 52-70. Spirou continued to take advantage of Brose turnovers with Walsh hitting a triple and then Johnson making a lay-up and two foul shots as the lead grew to 54-79 and the guests finished off Brose.

Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"I don’t think we have a lot to discuss. We started with a really bad energy level and were punished for that. And we did not generate the energy we needed. I though that with a game of such high importance that we would have a better performance. We got back into the game in the second half. Missing the three pointers in the third quarter left us without too many chances to come back. The European season is over for us now and we will now just look forward."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Spirou Basket
"I must be proud with this game. We had a lot of respect for them. It was an important game for us. We wanted to be in first place in the group. And after a game like this, how we played tonight, I don’t want to say anything special about how we played tonight."

Players

TAYLOR, ERIC
Brose Baskets
"We would have like to have advanced to the Last 16 but Charleroi showed tonight why they are the best team in Belgium and one of the best in Europe, But we still have high hopes in Germany."
JOHNSON, JERRY
Spirou Basket
"We played very hard tonight and it’s very hard to play on the road. But we played good defense and we got our win."
