THE TAKE

There will be true drama in the Group A regular season finale between Zadar and ASK Riga with only the winner assured of extending its Eurocup season beyond Tuesday’s game. It's a matter of do-or-die for Zadar, which will advance to the Last 16 with a victory at home, but head coach Denis Pleslic's side will watch the rest of the tournament from home if it loses. Meanwhile Riga could advance with a loss if Maroussi does not beat Roanne in the group’s other Week 6 game. Zadar dropped to 3-2 following a 91-75 loss at Maroussi. The Croatian champs shot just 43% from inside the arc while making just 6 of 19 (31%) from long range. Zadar also could not stop Maroussi's offense, allowing 17 assists while creating just 9 turnovers. Center Deyan Ivanov continued his fine campaign with another double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds, but he made just 3 of 13 shots. Forward Hrvoje Peric was outstanding with 20 points and 6 rebounds and center Todor Gecevski added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Playmaker Rok Stipcevic did have 14 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, but he also committed 5 turnovers. Pleslic must hope that forward Juby Johnson bounces back from his 3-point showing against Maroussi as he scored 17 points in the first match-up with ASK in Riga, where the hosts won 106-94. Stipcevic hit for 24 points in that game and Peric added 20 points off the bench. That kind of production would go a long way to getting Zadar into the Last 16. ASK Riga head coach Ramunas Butautas meanwhile is slowly running out of players. Bruno Sundov joined mass exodus from the Latvian capital following the departures this season of Ricardo Marsh, Milutin Aleksic and Corey Brewer. But despite having just a six-man rotation, Butautas guided ASK to an 86-70 victory at home over Chorale Roanne to improve to 3-2 and stay alive for the Last 16. Butautas got 13 points and 15 rebounds from veteran center Raitis Grafs in that game, while forward Ernests Kalve collected 23 points and 5 rebounds in 32 minutes of action - 19 points more than he had scored in the previous three Eurocup games combined. Playmaker Sandis Valters had 19 points and 6 assists while guard Aigars Vitols added 16 points and 7 rebounds. All told, ASK shot over 50% from the field and out-rebounded Roanne 42-24, while holding Chorale to just over 40% shooting for the game. Butautas of course will need similar production from his entire team and it would a big help if veteran forward Uvis Helmanis can play after missing the Roanne contest.

Quotes Head Coaches

KAIRYS, DONALDAS
ASK Riga
"The last two victories gave us confidence and trust in our strength as well as a positive mood. We will concentrate all our strength to show a good performance against Zadar. We want to win this game and decide our destiny ourselves, so that we do not have to count on the other game in our group."

Players

Juby Johnson - ZadarZadar started strong and never looked back as it polished off ASK Riga 83-68 to wrap up a berth in the Last 16. Zadar improved to 4-2 and finished the regular season in second place behind Maroussi Costa Coffee in Group A. Riga dropped to 3-3 and saw its Eurocup dreams die. The hosts dominated the first period using a 10-0 run as part of a 25-6 opening that gave Riga little chance. The visitors closed the gap to 43-30 at halftime thanks to Uvis Helmanis’s shooting and got within 11 early in the third period, but Zadar bounced back behind Hrvoje Peric and Todor Gecevski to restore the 19-point gap and Riga never got close to single digits again. Juby Johnson and Tomislav Ruzic paced the winners with 14 points each, Gecevski added 13, Rok Stipcevic scored 11 and dished 6 assists and Peric added 10 points. Raitis Grafs and Helmanis netted 14 apiece in defeat and Ernests Kalve and Dairis Bertans added 11 each.

Grafs opened the scoring for Riga on the offensive glass for what would prove to be the visitors only lead of the game. Peric came right back for Zadar with a triple, Johnson scored off a steal and Gecevski capped a 10-0 charge from downtown. Grafs scored again for ASK only to see Gecevski fire in another bomb and then dish to Johnson to give the hosts their first double-digit lead. A Bertans bucket didn’t deter Zadar as Stepcevic hit a three and scored a second-chance basket to make it 22-6 after 10 minutes. Deyan Ivanov made it a 19-point game early in the second period before Riga got its wind and started to make some shots. Andrius Mazutis, Sandi Valter and Helmanis all made three-pointers, though Zadar continued to score as well, keeping the lead at 15. Stipcevic increased it to 37-19 and Ruzic upped it to 41-22, but back-to-back Helmanis threes made it 43-30 at halftime.

Grafs brought the visitors within 11 at the stat of the third period, but Gecevski and Peric came to the rescue for Zadar. Johnson free throws made it a 19-point lead again A pair of Bertans baskets helped cut the deficit to 13, however a Stipcevic three and a Basket by Peric sput 62-45 on the scoreboard by the end of the third period. Grafs continued to battle for points, but Zadar always had an answer. Ruzic and Jere Macura kept the lead safe. A Johnson three with three minutes to go took the lead to 20 points and signaled time for the home team to celebrate a spot in the Last 16.
