THE TAKE

Lukoil Academic looks to even its record when it hosts undefeated Group H leader BC Kyiv. Coach Zeljko Lukajic's Lukoil team dropped to 1-2 by losing last week at Benetton Tamoil. The Bulgarians' struggles from long range was the difference as Lukajic's troops made just 6-of-21 (29%) three-pointers. Neither team shot particularly well - Lukoil 39% to Treviso 44% - and Lukajic's team trailed by just one point late until back-to-back turnovers resulted in an Italian run and the defeat. Playmaker Willie Deane again led Lukoil's attack with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. While center Murilo da Rosa and power forward Pero Antic combined for 33 points. Lukoil played good enough to win in Italy but Treviso had the extra bit of motivation after losing its first two games. Lukajic hopes his team can have that same motivation as it looks to even its record. But that will not be an easy task as undefeated Kyiv comes to town after trashing Pau-Orthez by 36 points at home to move to 3-0. Tomo Mahoric's team dominated the French on the boards, out-rebounding them 48-24, including 25 offensive rebounds. Kyiv also forced 22 turnovers, which resulted in 30 more shots. And the Ukrainian ULEB Cup debutant gave up just 37 points through three periods. Small forward Manuchar Markoishvili paced Kyiv with 27 points while shooting guard Marcus Faison had 15 points and power forward Artur Drozdov chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Mahoric did not get a lot of bench help though power forward Jacobs Jaacks collected nine points and 10 rebounds. If Kyiv can put together a similar showing, a 4-0 start looks very realistic.

Pero Antic scored 33 points to lead Lukoil Academic to a 95-87 victory at home over previously-undefeated BC Kyiv to even its record in Group H at 2-2. Riste Stefanov scored 18 points and Donta Smith added 12 for the Bulgarian winners, who committed just 10 turnovers in the game. Lukoil playmaker William Deane ran a great game with seven points, four rebounds and six assists. Kyiv fell for the first time this season despite trailing by just one point with three minutes left. Manuchar Markoishvili paced the Ukrainians with 19 points, five assists and four steals while Artur Drozdov scored 18 points in a losing cause as did Pooh Jeter, who also added seven assists. Jacobs Jaacks came off the bench to score 11 points for Kyiv, which drops to 3-1 in Group H.

Jeter hit back-to-back three-pointers as Kyiv opened the game ahead 3-6. Antic hit his first long ball for a 7-6 game and the lead changed hands five times until Marcus Faison and Markoishvili knocked down three-pointer for a 25-31 Kyiv advantage. But Stefanov knocked down a trey and another basket to give the Bulgarians the lead 32-31 after one period. Antic's three-point play extended the lead to 35-31 and the advantage was eight points - 43-35 - after Nenad Cenak's second straight score. Markoishvili hit from long range again and Viacheslav Kravtsov's foul shot knotted the game at 45-45. But Deane's free throw made it 46-45 at the break. Kyiv's Joshua Davis started the scoring in the second half with a three-point play. But Stefanov made two foul shots and a three-pointer in a 10-0 run which gave Lukoil a 56-49 cushion. Faison's three-ball stopped the bleeding and another Markoishvili three-ball made it 58-59. The lead again went back and forth and Smith's basket gave the Sofia side a 67-66 advantage going into the fourth. Drozdov's score gave Kyiv the lead back to start the final period before Todor Stoykov's three-ball made it 72-68. Drozdov knocked down a three-pointer to push Kyiv back ahead 74-75 only to be answered by Antic, who hit a basket and two foul shots for an 80-76 lead with four minutes left. Drozdov's next three-pointer was matched by a three-point play by Smith and then a three-ball by Antic to make it 86-79. Drozdov hit three foul shots but Stefanov made two free throws of his own and a three-pointer which was followed by Smith's basket for a 93-85 lead with less than a minute left to decide the game.

Head Coaches

LUKAJIC, ZELJKO
Lukoil Academic
"Congratulations to BK Kyiv for their achievements in the ULEB Cup recently. This game was tied during most of the time. There were too many mistakes from both teams, but finally we won. I was worried that I could not rely on another playmaker from the bench, but fortunately my players did not lose concentration in the key moments. I am thankful to the audience for supporting us during the whole game. We are awaiting the next games. Good luck to BK Kyiv in the ULEB Cup."
MAHORIC, TOMO
BC Kyiv
"Lukoil Academic played really good. It happened to be a very interesting game. Unfortunately, we did not play the defense we usually do and that is the main reason we lost. We tried to tie the game at the end, but we failed. The mistakes we made led to our loss. We are looking forward to the next game."

Players

ANTIC, PERO

"We deserved to win. Playing as a real team today brought us the desired victory. My approach to the opponent is all the same no matter which the team is. This victory is precious first because it is a home one and second because it is against BK Kyiv."
