THE TAKE

Le Mans Sarthe Basket will make its long-anticipated Euroleague debut on Thursday by hosting Climamio Bologna in Group A at Antares Arena. The French champs built a squad that can compete for a spot in the Top 16 and its first test will come against perennial Euroleague contenders Climamio. Both teams have seen large turnover between this and last season's rosters. But once they click, both of these teams promise to challenge in Group A. Climamio has a new point guard in veteran leader Tyus Edney, who surely enjoys playing with a pair of sharpshooters in guard Marco Belinelli and forward David Bluthenthal. If any players can hound Edney, they can be found in the Le Mans backcourt of Yannick Bokolo and Pape Philippe Amagou. Those Euroleague rookies will be central to the team's chances of stopping Climamio and of making an impact in Group A. One area where Le Mans holds a major advantage is in height, with 2.10-meter Sandro Nicevic and 2.14-meter Mate Skelin clogging the middle. Climamio's interior players, Tomas Ress, Vasco Evitmov and James Thomas, stand 2.08, 2.05 and 2.03 respectively. At the forward spots, the home team is well known for its athletic duo of Kenny Gregory and Eric Campbell, a pair of high flyers who can lock down on defense as well. They'll seek to outrun and outgun Bluthenthal, Preston Shumpert and tough Stefano Mancinelli. The playmakers will play as big a role as ever in determining the outcome of this came. Le Mans must decide whether to pound the ball inside to make use of its height advantage or to run and build around Gregory and Campbell's speed. Those decisions won't be easy for the Le Mans guards. On the other end, Edney surely knows all the right moves, and he has energetic Steffan Hamman to help him. The team that reads the game best will have a great chance to start this season 1-0.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"It is the first game and we are all waiting for it with haste. We are excited and lucky to host such a great and historic team for our Euroleague debut. Now, despite all the respect that Climamio deserves, we must not simply watch them play. We intent to defy them and push them to their limits.Even though it is the just the first match, it is of the utmost importance for us to be able to win at home."
FRATES, FABRIZIO
Climamio Bologna
"A great adventure is starting for us in France. Getting to the Top 16 is our goal and we know it won’t be easy, but we want to try. This road game is difficult. It’s our first game in the Euroleague and a road win in the opener can give us a lot, both on the psychological side and in the standings. Le Mans is a traditional French side. They have many athletic players, like Americans Kenny Gregory and Eric Cambell. The French national team guys, Amagou, Bokolo and Batum can be fantastic on the court. Moreover, they added Tyson Wheeler, who gives them another dimension on the perimeter – many shots off the screen-and-roll. Then, expert players like Bogavac and Nicevic will balance the team play."

"The first game is always gonna be tough at any level, especially psychologically. But it’s our first ever game in Euroleague and we absolutely have to win at home. The crowd and the whole team and staff have been waiting for this moment for a long time and it’s really important to get a good start. However we keep in mind that Bologna is a great team and is coming to LeMans to win. I hope it’s gonna be a spectacular game."
SHUMPERT, PRESTON
Climamio Bologna
"This is my second season in the Euroleague. The last one with Milano was a good experience for me. Now, I know the physical play and I am happy to to be back. We are working every day to improve and to be ready for the competition, but we have a lot of new players and it takes a little time to get together. But we’re heading the right direction. In this group we'll face a lot of good teams. Tau Ceramica, Efes Pilsen and Olympiacos are powerhouses in Europe, they play pretty good and I'm sure it will be a great fight every week. I know the Le Mans team and they deserved to be here. I faced Kenny Gregory in my first Italian season and I know Tyson Wheeler too. They have big men and good athletic skills. The Euroleague is difficult because you can’t underestimate any team. Le Mans, like all underdogs team, can beat anybody. We have to stay mentally focused and put our skills on the floor."
Kenny Gregory - Le Mans Le Mans provided a big show in its first-ever Euroleague game and beat visiting Climamio Bologna 82-71 in France to open Group A with a win on Thursday night. Bokolo tied the game with a four-meter jumper which Edney matched with a baseline shot for a 21-23 Climamio lead early in the second quarter. As such, Campbell hit free throws while Pape-Philippe Amagou took over with an acrobatic driving layup, good for a 25-23 Le Mans edge. Belinelli shined with a left-handed driving basket but a red hot Campbell matched it with a four-meter jumper. Climamio tried a 2-3 zone defense with James Thomas in the middle to avoid more baskets in penetration. Le Mans opted to use its athleticism to power the offensive board, but its shooters were off-target. Meanwhile, Shumpert nailed a triple from the top of the ley and Bluthenthal added a fast break layup to bring the guests within 48-46 at the halfway mark of the third quarter. Wheeler answered from downtown but Bluthenthal matched it with his second three-pointer. Gregory decided to provide a big show with a monster dunk-and-foul and a reverse fast break slam, igniting a 8-0 run which Amagou capped with a forner three-pointer for a 58-49 Le Mans lead. Thomas and Bluthenthal nailed consecutive jumpers, but a jump hook by Gregory kept Le Mans going. Shumpert beat the buzzer with a corner triple which brought Climamio within 61-56 after three quarters.

Stefano Mancinelli fueled the Climamio comeback with free throws while Shumpert scored off a midcourt steal, forcing Le Mans to call timeout at 61-60. Nicevic stepped up with another short jumper while Bokolo shined with a driving layup off a Climamio turnover to give the hosts a 65-60. Bluthenthal rescued Climamio with a jumper and Shumpert copied him soon after that to make it a one-point game, 65-64. Nicevic kept pacing Le Mans with another close basket while Bogavac nailed one from downtown to give the hosts some fresh air, 70-64, midway through the final period. Campbell send the crowd to their feet with a dunk, but Edney silenced everyone with an off-balanced jumper. Bogavac took over with a three-point play and Campbell added a put-back dunk to give Le Mans a 77-67 lead with under 3 minutes remaining. Climamio called timeout, but Campbell dunked it again to seal the outcome, showing that few teams will be able to beat Le Mans at home this season.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"This is an emotional game for the club. We were dreaming of the Euroleague for five years and we won the first game at home against a team that plays at this level since the beginning. We built our victory with domination in the paint, explained in part by athletical domination, but also by enthusiasm."
FRATES, FABRIZIO
Climamio Bologna
"My compliments to Le Mans. They played a tough game. We have to go home with confidence. We are on the right way. We need more work. I believe that it's not difficult to find our problem. In defense, against big men, it was difficult. We are not athelic enough for the Euroleague."

Players

CAMPBELL, ERIC
Le Mans
"It was a great team effort and win. I'm very happy for coach and for Pierre (Tavano). If we continue to play like this then we will be successful in the future."
EDNEY, TYUS
Climamio Bologna
"They played a big game. They started slowly then we had problems keeping our offense. We let them have too many second chances."
