THE TAKE

Two teams with extremely different starts to the season square off when Brose Baskets hosts Lietuvos Rytas on Thursday in Bamberg, Germany. L. Rytas comes into the match as the co-Group A leader with a 2-0 record, while Brose Baskets is winless at 0-2. The two teams were opponents last season in Group F of the Euroleague Top 16 with the Lithuanian champs winning both meetings. Bamberg has showed signs of improvement since an opening night drubbing against Nancy in which coach Dirk Bauermann's team committed 25 turnovers and lost 49-83. Last week Brose Baskets improved its shooting and coughed the ball up just 11 times, although it came up short at AEK Athens, 82-76. Since then the club has added point guard Derrick Zimmerman, who could make his ULEB Cup debut on Tuesday. Zimmerman's addition could allow the team to use DeJuan Collins more at shooting guard, which together with Robert Garrett creates a quicker and deeper backcourt. The depth could come in handy against L. Rytas's hot-shooting guards. Last week Roberts Stelmahers drilled six triples for 18 points and Andre Emmet scored 19 in an overtime victory at Nancy. As a team L. Rytas made 53.8% of its three-point attempts, which canceled out its poor free-throw shooting (50%). Although the guards may be the deciding factors in the game, they will need the big men to do their jobs in the paint. Darren Fenn and Zelly Wesson make up an effective inside duo for Brose Baskets, while Matt Neilsen, Marijonas Petravicius and Jaoa Paulio Batista counter for the visitors. This game could be a critical point for both teams' seasons. Bamberg can't afford to start 0-3 with a pair of home losses, but a win with another home game up next week could turn the team around. For L. Rytas, a win would mean a 3-0 start that includes two road wins. That motivation will sit inside both teams as a playoff atmosphere develops for this early-season encounter.

De Juan Collins - Brose Baskets DeJuan Collins capped a big night with the game-winning layup in the final minute to lead Brose Baskets to a 78-77 win over former ULEB Cup champion Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius on Tuesday in a Group A game in Bamberg, Germany. Collins scored 20 points and dished 10 assists to lead Brose Baskets to its first win. L. Rytas, which lost its opportunity for the win when Roberts Stelmahers turned the ball over in the closing seconds, fell to 201. Adam Harrington drilled four triples on his way to 17 points, Darren Fenn added 12 and Zelly Wesson finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Marijonas Petravicius led L. Rytas with 14, Joao Paulo Batista added 12, Tomas Delininkaitis 10 and Stelmahers 10 points and 6 assists.

Andre Emmett's free throw opened the scoring and Marijonas Petravicius's offensive rebound and putback made it 2-6 for the guests. Another Petravicius offensive rebound and putback made it 10-12. Matt Nielsen's inside basket gave the Lithuanians a 13-16 advantage. But back-to-back three-pointers by Adam Harrington pushed the Germans in front 19-18. Newly-acquired Derrick Zimmerman came off the bench and assisted on and scored a basket for a 25-24 Bamberg lead after 10 minutes. Bamberg continued to get excellent help from their bench as Ivan Pavic scored inside for a 31-28 advantage. The see-saw first half went on as Andrius Slezas buried his second straight three-pointer for a 34-36 Rytas lead. The Germans pulled back ahead on Darren Fenn's trey - 41-38. Joao Paulo Batista scored four baskets in the final three minutes and Collins hit four free throws in the final minute as the teams went into the locker-rooms tied - 46-46. There were a total of 18 lead changes in the first half.

The Lithuanians scored just one point on their first four possessions of the second half as Fenn's inside basket opened a 52-47 Bamberg lead - the biggest advantage for either side thus far. Sharon Drucker's side would not go away as Roberts Stelmahers buried a trey to push Rytas back ahead 52-53. K'Zell Wesson and Chris Ensminger each made two free throws for a 58-55 lead only to see Rytas snatch the lead back on Emmett's alley-oop dunk and foul shot - 58-60. Tomas Delininkaitis's driving layup on the break gave Lietuvos a 60-64 lead and the Lithuanians were ahead 62-65 going into the final period. Harrington hit another long range bomb to draw even 67-67 only to see Slezas answer with a trey of his own (67-70). Collins scored three straight baskets - the last a trey - and Wesson buried two free throws for a 76-70 Bamberg lead with 2:04 remaining. But again, the Lithuanians would not die and Titus Ivory missed a chance to tie the game on a free throw with 43 seconds left. Bu t Collins turned the ball over and Delininkaitis scored a break-away layup for a 76-77 Rytas lead with 20 seconds left. Collins redeemed himself with a layup in the paint on an inbounds play wtih one second left. And then he dipped away the inbounds pass for the Bamberg victory.

Head Coaches

BAUERMANN, DIRK
Brose Baskets
"When you play against a strong team that many people will win the ULEB Cup, it's great when you win against such as team: But it's also important we won with a great performance. You can't say they had a bad day. When it happens in the last second it's a huge success for us. It's important for the development of our team, being able to beat such a high-calibre team. We don't have to think we can win such a game, now we know we can. I was so happy that it was DC Colling who won this game. You could see the pressure on him after the tumovers, and it's good for his self-confidence. We still have a long way for this team. But we developed an excellent pressure over 40 minutes. And it was important that we put our stamp on this game - and that's defensively which then helps us offensively. We have to play like this at home."
DRUCKER, SHARON
Lietuvos Rytas
"I think it was very strong and physical game between two good teams. The atmosphere was greeat and we enjoyed playing here except thte last-second shot. It was a tight game, and I expected it. I know coach (Bauermann) very well. We're disappointed with the last shot because we did a great job coming back from down six to plus one. And then to lose it. It's tough."

Players

WESSON, K´ZELL
Brose Baskets
"We just really wanted this one. We knew how important it was after the first two games. Now we're 1-2 and if we win next week we're 2-2 and everything is open. We needed this to stay in the competition. It was a battle, we knew they came from the Euroleague as well. But we just wanted it more."
BATISTA, JOAO PAULO
Lietuvos Rytas
"It was tough for us tonight because the crowd was so into the game. But that's the ULEB Cup. You have to get used to that. We played well, nobody gave up and really played to the very end."
