THE TAKE

Ulker (0-2) will be looking for its first win of the year and a place in the Group C race when it hosts France's Pau-Orthez (1-1) Wednesday in Istanbul, Turkey. Both of Ulker's defeats this season have come by double figures, but the talented squad can certainly bounce back with a breakout offensive performance at any moment. Keys to victory could come on the wings of Jeff Trepagnier and Ibrahim Kutluay's shooting, or the inside games of center Marcus Haislip and power forward Misrad Turkcan. Trepagnier has led the team with 15.5 points per game, while Turkcan adds 13 points and 9 rebounds. Haislip netted 10 last week vs Unicaja in his Euroleague debut and continued to play well in a domestic league victory over the weekend. Pau is playing steady, having run ahead of the pack in the French League leader and also defeated Partizan by 25 points on the road in their Group C opening game. Last week, however, Pau was upended at home 50-69 by Real Madrid. Power forward Anthony Lux, who came away with 17 points and 5 rebounds, was the team's only bright spot in that defeat. Pau bounced back, however, with a blowout domestic win over the weekend. Pau is led by the backcourt combo of Lonnie Cooper and Clint Harrison, who are averaging 15.5 and 14 points, respectively. Lux is putting up 13 points per night and should get help from center Brooke Sales, who had a big night in the last domestic win, to battle with Haislip and Turkcan in the paint in what could be the biggest factor in the outcome of this game. Vribca Stefanov, Omer Onan and Trepagnier must slow down Harrison and Cooper to keep the game at Ulker's pace, but just as important will be putting the ball in the basket, since Ulker's averages 61.5 points and 4 assists may not be enough to keep any visitor from thinking it can win in Istanbul.

Its fans had to wait a little while, but its first Group C victory was well worth it as Ulker thrashed visiting Pau-Orthez 87-55 at home in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday. Both teams share a 1-2 record in the Group C standings along with CSKA Moscow and Unicaja. Jeff Trepganier led the winners with 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting and 5 steals. Vrbica Stefanov added 17 points, Marcus Haislip had 16 while Mirsad Turkcan had a monster double-double of 12 points and 19 rebounds. Turkcan's 19 rebounds tied for the seventh-most ever pulled in a Euroleague game. he also has the top three best rebounding performances ever. Brooks Sales was the only player in double digits for Pau with 11 points. Haislip had 11 points himself in the opening quarter as Ulker sprinted ahead, while Stefanov and Trepagnier fueled a 17-4 second quarter run that put the hosts in charge for good.

Thierry Rupert's free throws and C.C. Harrison's driving layup got Pau a quick 0-4 lead to start the game. Haislip put Ulker on the right track with a baseline jumper, however, and that ignited a 10-0 run. Turkcan scored inside and fed Omer Onan for a fastbreak layup while Haislip scored twice more, including a dunk that forced a Pau timeout at 10-4. Lonnie Cooper immediately nailed a long two-pointer, but Ulker continued to dominate with man-to-man defense while Trepagnier nailed a corner three-pointer to make it 14-6. Now, T.J. Lux rescued Pau by sparking a 0-6 run that Cooper capped with free throws to bring the guests within 14-12. But Turkcan appeared again with a tip-in, Haislip nailed a turnaround jumper and Onan scored from downtown to put Ulker fully in charge again, 21-14. Sourata Cisse scored a backdoor layup, but Haislip followed a close basket with a blocked shot as Ulker led 23-16 after 10 minutes.

Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter but Turkcan dominated the boards for Ulker until Stefanov slashed for a layup and added free throws. Thierry Gadou scored inside to bring Pau within 27-18, but the guests struggled to score otherwise. Stefanov drove again and Ibrahim Kutluay copied him put Ulker up 31-18 after 15 minutes. After Artur Drozdov and Stefanov traded shots, Pau switched to 2-3 zone defense that Trepagnier punished with 5 quick points. His triple and free throws came in a 7-0 run that made it a 20-point game, 40-20. Drozdov tried to change things with a fastbreak dunk and Harrison added a corner three, but free throws by Oguz Savas and a breakaway layup by Kutluay restored a 45-25 Ulker margin at halftime.

Turkcan, Haislip and Trepganier kept scoring until Ulker's lead reached a new high, 51-27, soon after halftime. Sales scored inside for Pau, but otherwise the guests lacked concentration. Meanwhile, Stefanov fired for three from the corner three to make it 54-29. While Pau stayed in its zone defense, Turkcan continued doing all the dirty work under the rims while Trepagnier drove for a layup and Stefanov drilled another triple for a mammoth 60-31 lead. It got worse for Pau as Onan struck from downtown and Trepagnier poured in 6 quick points for a 70-36 Ulker margin after 30 minutes.

The outcome was clear, so both teams fought for points differential, a critical issue when it comes to multi-way ties at the end of the regular season. Sales tried to reduce his team's deficit with consecutive baskets, but Ulker continued to excel on defense and didn't allow second chances to Pau. Turkcan had 5 points of a 6-0 run that kept Ulker way out in front, 83-44, with 4 minutes to go. There was little to be said and done in the end, as all Ulker fans celebrated a blowout first win that gets their team back into the Group C race.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Ulker
"Honestly, we were expecting the win tonight. We had our resistance getting stronger after we had Marcus Haislip and Ibrahim Kutluay back in the team. We played an aggressive game starting from the beginning until the end. We were very effective both in defense and offense. Pau-Orthez became more influential in the group after they beat Partizan. We were not able to defeat Pau-Orthez for two years now in Istanbul. For that reason this is another kind of important win for us. Mirsad Turkcan was the best on court tonight. He was not lucky enough in offense but made everything perfectly in defense. I’m very happy that my team erased the defeat of the previous two matches with that win."
GADOU, DIDIER
Pau-Orthez
"There’s nothing to say apart from that we did nothing to win tonight against Ulker. We played very bad in both sides of the game, in offense and defense. We gave our opponent the chance for easy shots and they used this advantage very well. The rebounds difference between the two teams is also a part of the big difference. By the way, 18 turnovers is too much to handle for a game also. I don’t know the reason but our lack of motivation is the most important reason of our loss tonight."

Players

TURKCAN, MIRSAD
Ulker
"It was a very important match for us because we would have been in a very deep trouble in the group if we had lost this game. I think we just started the Euroleague bad because we had too many absences due to injuries before the tournament and it affected us very bad. But tonight we played like a good team. We were a little bit nervous at the beginning but it’s because we lost the first two games in the group. This win will help us to recover."
DROZDOV, ARTUR
Pau-Orthez
"We knew that the game was going to be harder but we were not expecting Ulker that tough. They outrebounded us and played better than us especially in defense. We had lots of mistakes and weren’t able to balance the game. Especially in the third quarter, we left too many easy shots to Ulker to score. The only thing we can do now is to forget about this loss and look to the future."
