THE TAKE

Two of the best teams in the 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague meet in Kaunas, Lithuania on Friday, when Zalgiris welcomes Unicaja Malaga in Group E. Zalgiris comes off a 1-point loss in Athens, but has only lost one game in front of its diehard fans at Zalgirio Arena this season. Unicaja beat Brose Baskets Bamberg at home and has been deadly on the road, losing just once outside of Malaga. Zalgiris has a 6-4 lead in the all-time series and won its last two home games against Unicaja.

It will be a special game for Zalgiris small forward Tremmell Darden, who faces his former team for whom he made his Euroleague debut last season. Darden will be one of Coach Joan Plaza's main options at the wings due to his all-around game, winning mentality and determination. Sharp shooter Marko Popovic, veteran bomber Rimantas Kaukenas and athletic forward Mindaugas Kuzminskas offer help at the wings. Darden faces an interesting matchup against experienced swingman Sergi Vidal. Popovic will test his scoring skills against Txemi Urtasun and Kaukenas must use his shooting range and driving skills against Krunoslav Simon, a deadly player due to his post skills - unexpected for a swingman - and mid-range shots. Zoran Dragic gives Coach Jasmin Repesa another defensive weapon to use against Popovic and Kaukenas. The point guard battle will be equally interesting, as both teams are deep at the '1' spot. Earl Calloway offers court sense and experience and Marcus Williams is his perfect complement due to his silent leadership, deep shooting range and tremendous determination. Calloway will fight against a good on-the-ball defender in Oliver Lafayette, while Williams is more likely to see playing time against the more athletic Ibby Jaaber. The Lavrinovic twins, Darjus and Ksistof, will see most of theminutes around the baskets, offering shooting range, offensive rebounds and a lot of experience. Paulius Jankunas will be ready to showcase his post skills and power the offensive boards, while Jeff Foote and Mario Delas provide intensity off the bench. Darjus Lavrinovic and Delas must use their size against recently-acquired forward Andy Panko, who can do a little bit of everything on the court. Unicaja can use a taller lineup with Panko and Fran Vazquez - who comes off a huge defensive effort - at the forward slots. Foote must battle hard against center Kosta Perovic and Ksistof Lavrinovic will not have it easy against Luka Zoric, whose power and strength make him a tough mismatch. Augusto Cesar Lima gives Unicaja more intensity, athleticism and power off the bench.

Plaza worked with Calloway for three years and coached Urtasun the last two, so he will have an advantage in order to stop them. At the same time, Repesa knows all about Marko Popovic, who worked with him in the past. Zalgiris must play with high intensity at both ends, power the offensive board and rely on over 14,000 fans to generate a winning basketball atmosphere, just as always. Unicaja needs a good game from Williams and Panko, must control the tempo and prevent Zalgiris from running the floor.

"Happy New Year to everybody! Preparing for this game I have told my players that the next game is the most important for Zalgiris so far this season. It doesn’t matter what happened before. We want to be among the first four teams in the group and we have to win against Unicaja at home. Unicaja is coming after an 18-point loss in Valencia, so they will be angry and will want to show that they are capable of bigger things. But now it’s our time, so everybody needs to be involved tomorrow – players, coaches, fans, journalists, everybody. We expect that people will come to Zalgirio Arena as before and will help us to compete at our best. I have coached a few players from Unicaja, I know this team. Everybody is talking about Marcus Williams, but they have much more good players in Calloway, Urtasun, Zoric, Panko, Vazquez and others. We play against a team that won its Regular Season group and which is filled with experienced players like the Lavrinovices, Kaukenas or Popovic. I am sure it will be a tough game but we travel there to confirm whet we have accomplsihed so far in this Euroleague because we are ready to compete with any team at this level in Europe."

Ibby Jaaber leads the Euroleague in steals this season with 2.10 per game.

Jaaber needs 4 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.

Jaaber recorded a career-high 8 steals, which is tied for the sixth most ever in a Euroleague game, against Unicaja when he played for Lottomatica Virtus Roma in the 2007-08 Top 16.

Marko Popovic has made at least 1 three-pointer in seven straight and 46 of his last 47 Euroleague appearances. 

Rimas Kaukenas has made 17 straight free throws in Euroleague action.

Paulius Jankunas has recorded at least 1 steal in six consecutive Euroleague games.

UNICAJA MALAGA

Unicaja leads the Euroleague in rebounding with 37.1 boards per game.

With his 196th career appearance this week, Sergi Vidal will surpass former Maccabi Tel Aviv captain Derrick Sharp for sole possession of 10th place on the competition’s list of games played.

Vidal needs 1 more three-pointer to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.

Vidal was a teammate of Zalgiris big man Darjus Lavrinovic at Real Madrid during the 2009-10 season.

Andy Panko scored a season-high 16 points in his Unicaja debut last week.      

Luka Zoric hauled in a Euroleague career-high 12 rebounds and blocked 3 shots in leading Unicaja to an 85-78 overtime victory over Zalgiris at home on October 25, 2011.

Krunoslav Simon scored a Euroleague career-high 22 points playing for KK Zagreb against Zalgiris last season. In doing so he led that club to its debut Euroleague victory.

Jasmin Repesa coached Zalgiris guard Ibby Jaaver in the latter’s Euroleague debut in the 2007-08 season at Lottomatica Roma.

Repesa has coached Zalgiris guard Marko Popovic in the past on the Croatian national team.

Zalgiris holds on to beat Unicaja

Mindaugas Kuzminskas - Zalgiris Kaunas - EB12

Zalgiris Kaunas picked up its first win of the Top 16 by downing visiting Unicaja Malaga 75-63 on Friday night. Both teams hold 1-1 record after two games played and share third place in Group E along with Panathinaikos Athens and Anodolu Efes Istanbul. Zalgiris led for most of the game, but could not build a significant lead as Unicaja lingered for the entire night. However, Ksistof Lavrinovic and Mindaugas Kuzminskas combined for a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter, putting the hosts in control before Paulius Jankunas made a basket-plus-foul to seal the deal with less than 60 seconds to go. Kuzminskas led the way with game-high 14 points plus 6 rebounds. Ksistof Lavrinovic finished with 12, Jankunas scored 11 while Marko Popovic chipped in with 10 points in victory. For Unicaja, Early Calloway scored all 11 of his points in the first half, while Luka Zoric also had 11 points along with 6 rebounds. Zoran Dragic added 8 points in defeat.

First quarter: Teams rain three-pointers early

Jankunas hit a pair of free throws before Calloway and Ksistof Lavrinovic traded triples to start the game. Rimantas Kaukenas added a three-pointer of his own to give Zalgiris an 8-3 advantage, but Zoric made an uncontested layup and Calloway sank another triple to tie the game. Tremmell Darden scored inside as the teams picked up the pace in the opening minutes, and Darden hit a triple from the left corner for a 15-8 lead. The visitors answered with an easy layup and a shot from downtown from Zoran Dragic that got them back within a single possession. A floater by Mindaugas Kuzminskas kept Zalgiris in front before Kosta Perovic and Darjus Lavrinovic traded baskets, 21-17, and rounded out the scoring in the first 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Unicaja’s defense erases 9-point deficit

It did not take long in the second quarter for Zalgiris to double the margin. Kuzminskas and Oliver Lafayette were perfect from the foul line, and Popovic made a three-pointer on a fast break for 28-19. However Calloway hit his third three-pointer, then stole the ball and raced for an easy dunk capping a 0-7 run for 28-26. Unicaja did not allow a field goal the rest of the quarter by combining smart defensive plays from Calloway and Marcus Williams as well as profiting from some sloppy Zalgiris passing. The visitors tied the game through Krunoslav Simon, 30-30, but in the final four minutes of the quarter failed to produce a field goal themselves. On the other side, a steal from Popovic in the final second of the quarter led to a pair of free throws by the same player, giving Zalgiris a 34-30 halftime lead.

Third quarter: Zalgiris holds on to slim advantage

Fran Vazquez opened the third quarter with a long jumper, but Lafayette and Popovic hit back-to-back three-pointers for 40-32. Unicaja replied with a 1-10 run, started with a dunk by Zoric and a triple from Sergi Vidal, before Vazquez hit another long jump shot and finally Simon sank a three-pointer, 41-42. Darjus Lavrinovic scored inside, quickly restoring Zalgiris’s lead before Dragic’s basket-plus-foul tied it at 45-45. The hosts remained in front by going 5 for 6 from the foul line, and Kuzminskas scored inside for a 5-point lead, but Vazquez made a tip-in in the dying seconds of the quarter for a 52-51 edge going into the final 10 minutes.

Fourth quarter: Zalgiris pulls away for win

Ksistof Lavrinovic opened the fourth quarter with a three and Kuzminskas’s put-back restored a 6-point Zalgiris lead before teams went into a two-minute offensive slump despite racing from one end of the floor to another. Txemi Urtasun made a runner to end the scoring drought, but again Kuzminskas and Lavrinovic extended the lead to 61-53. A dunk by Zoric after a lovely pass from Calloway gave Unicaja hope, but couple of layups from Lafayette extended the lead into double figures, 67-56. Williams hit a three-pointer on the other side, helping Unicaja cut it to 67-61, however, Jankunas made basket-plus-foul to seal the deal. Jankunas then and added a triple and a blocked shot in the final seconds before Kaukenas hit a buzzer-beating jump shot to account for the final score.

"After the game I told the players that it wasn’t our best game. We were quite nervous in some episodes, but we were playing with the right attitude. Also after such a good start to the season the pressure is getting bigger. The difference was that we had five players who scored 10 points or more and Unicaja – only two. Both teams were good in defense, had quite equal stats except for rebounding, which we won by 8. That was a team effort. But this time I also want to point out our captain Paulius Jankunas. Maybe he didn’t score 20 points or grab 15 rebounds, but he was everywhere in every important moment and he was the man who I can thank the most tonight."

"Congratulations to Zalgiris for the win, which they deserved in the end. Only the final margin wasn’t fair. While we were in control of defensive rebounds and played patiently, we were in the game. But in the fourth quarter we made a few turnovers, which led to their easy fast breaks and we didn’t organize defensive rebounding well. Overall defense, especially in the half court game, was good, but we collapsed in the last quarter. But we cannot forget that we are younger team than this experienced Zalgiris team. I wasn’t surprised by the play of Mindaugas Kuzminskas. I know this player and we talked about how to play him before the game, but his defenders weren’t concentrated enough."

"We had our last game at home, so this time it was very hard to play because of the 15,000 people. We prepared for the game and we were fighting until the last two minutes. Zalgiris has good players, they played very aggressive and they were at home. Zalgiris has the best fans in Europe, so it is also very nice to play here.
