THE TAKE

Either Zadar or Hapoel Jerusalem will have good chances of advancing to the elimination round from Group I as the two face off in Croatia. Head coach Aleksandar Petrovic's Zadar walloped EiffelTowers Den Bosch to improve to 4-4 - in a three-way tie for second place. The Croatian side shot 54% from the floor while holding EiffelTowers to just 38% shooting for the game. Guard Julius Johnson's 24 points led four starters in double figures while power forward Jere Macura added 10 points and 9 rebounds. Petrovic's team will be looking to avenge its 1-point loss at Jerusalem in Week 4, when Hapoel shot 52% and committed just 9 turnovers. But these teams have gone in different directions since that game - Zadar winning three out of its last four and Jerusalem losing three from its last four. Zadar will move into the next round with a win and a Strasbourg loss at EiffelTowes. Meanwhile head coach Dan Shamir's Jerusalem will clinch a spot in the elimination rounds with a win. However the Israeli side arrives in Croatia short-handed with only seven senior players. Hapoel is desperately missing its star power forward Jamie Arnold, who averaged nearly 20 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block in the first six games. Arnold has yet to return from knee surgery, while forward Sharon Shason suffers from a hand injury and guard Anthony Roberson has been released. Jerusalem was thrashed last week by 53 points at Unics Kazan to fall to 4-4. Shamir's team shot just 31% for the game and committed 19 turnovers, while watching Kazan win the rebounding battle 49-25 and shoot 55% from the floor. The only Jerusalem player to score in double figures was forward Guy Pniny with 14 points. Center Erez Markovich added 9 points, but no other Hapoel player hit for more than 5 points. Shamir would like nothing more than his team to quickly forget the Kazan game and re-focus on Zadar, knowing Jerusalem still has everything to play for.

Zadar made it to the elimination rounds in Group I by thrashing Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem 103-75 at home on Tuesday. Zadar improved to 5-4 to take sole possession of the second place in Group I. Zadar clinched a por in the elimination rounds, too, as EiffelTowers Den Bosch beat Strasbourg. Meanwhile, Hapoel dropped to 4-5 and is in a complicated situation in this group due to its tie break disadvantage against Unics Kazan and Strasbourg. Julius Johnson led the winners with 17 points. Andrej Stimac and Corey Brewer each added 13, Jere Macura posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds while Jure Lalic and Todor Gecevski had 10 points apiece for Zadar. Noel Felix led Hapoel with 20 points on 9-for-14 two-pointers. Guy Pniny added 15 while Dror Hagag had 11 for the guests. Zadar opened the game with a 15-5 run, while Shammel Stallworth and an unstoppable Johnson soon boosted the hosts' margin to 33-17 after 10 minutes. Pniny and Felix gave Hapoel some hope, 41-30, early in the second quarter. Stimac and Johnson led a 16-0 run that broke the game open, 59-31, at halftime. Hapoel never recovered, allowing all Zadar fans to enjoy a very important home win.

Erez Markovich and Pniny paced Hapoel in the early going, but Zadar soon found its double-digit lead. Macura scored inside, igniting a 9-0 run highlighted by Gecevski's triple. Back-to-back baskets by Johnson gave the hosts a 15-5 lead. Pniny and Felix tried to change things for Hapoel but Johnson and Stallworth stroke from downtown in a 12-0 run that broke the game open, 29-13. Johnson allowed Zadar to keep a 33-17 margin after 10 minutes. The game turned into a three-point shootout early in the second quarter. Stallworth, Yehu Orland, Lalic, Ramel Curry and Pniny scored from downtown for a 39-26 score. A put-back layup by Felix got Hapoel even closer, 41-30. Zadar did not panic, as Rok Stipcevic, Stimac and Johnson led a game-breaking 16-0 run that Macura capped with a put-back basket, enough for Hapoel to get a mamooth 59-32 halftime margin. Gecevski followed a close basket with a triple to make it a 31-point game, 64-33, right after the break. Pniny tried to change things with 5 quick points while Felix and Hagag got Hapoel within 68-44. Zadar kept rolling, however, as Brewer and Stimac stepped up for the hosts. Stipcevic buried another three-pointer while a put-back basket by Stimac gave Zadar a 77-51 edge after 30 minutes. The outcome was already clear, especially when Stipcevic, Brewer and Lalic restored a 33-point Zadar lead, 86-53. Hapoel fought for points differential now but Zadar kept full control with an organized offense and strong defense. Everything was said and done, as Zadar celebrated a major home win and almost eliminated a direct opponent in the process.

"First of all I would like to congratulate my players, not only because of tonight's game, but because before the game we secured the second place. I am extremely satisfied with the achievement of the last 9 games in the ULEB Cup. It is not easy to come back after you lose three games in the last seconds. You all remember the game we have shown against Strasbourg, and Kazan, yet we managed to lose. So tonight’s game is only a result of the two months' work where we finally reached our form. Once again the public has shown their best, and backed us all along. The goal that was brought in front of me was to reach the second round in ULEB Cup. Still, about tonight’s game, we were aware of the problems that Hapoel had, but we just didn't want to pay any attention to them, because we had our task, and believed that we were obligated to our audience because the last game wasn't that attractive. I must bring out the statistics also, because the ranking after the first half was 82, and I think it is remarkable. That is the proof of our quality tonight, and everything tonight was colored with our flags...Once again, I congratulate the players. It was obvious that Hapoel wasn't in the mood tonight; partially it was our favor, and partially regarding to theirs own objective problems and injuries."

I watched them the whole season and I have nothing but great words for them. This is one side of the story the other is that we are going through some tough times, we have some injuries, and although I never talk about injuries or excuses, but last night when I saw five players at practice, I knew there was nothing much to do. I just want to congratulate coach Petrović and I wish you success later on this season."
