The Take

Fresh off back-to-back wins and with the Round 6 MVP Luke Harangody leading the way, Darussafaka looks to edge closer to the Top 16 when it hosts Bamberg. The German champs are in great form with three wins in a row. Darussafaka has been stronger team on the boards, averaging 37.6 rebounds to Bamberg's 32.7. Bamberg leads the Euroleague in two-point shooting percentage (59%) and is second in three-point accuracy (42%). Darussafaka ranks high in fouls drawn (21.8) but low in free throw percentage (68.1%). It is also third in turnovers at 15.7 per game. Bamberg may have the answer for Harnagody in Daniel Theis and Leon Radosevic. The addition of Furkan Aldemir to the frontcourt rotations with Marcus Slaughter and Semih Erden will make thing rough on Nicolo Melli and Elias Harris. Guards Brad Wanamaker and Kostas Sloukas lead the Bamberg attack, which Reggie Redding and Jamon Gordon will match for the hosts. Both teams in this game have high ambitions and will be hungry for this important victory.

Quotes Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"Every game grows in importance as the season goes on in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. We are back home following two road win in a row and our aim is now to grab a home win thanks to the support of our fans. Brose is a confident team and they are playing a fluid game. We need to play very smart and control the pace of the game in order to get a win against them."
TRINCHIERI, ANDREA
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"For us, every Euroleague game is tough. Darüssafaka is a huge organization, have a huge budget and a lot of great names. They have a roster of 18 Players, it’s like a football team. They are the rising star of European basketball organizations. But still we have to play five against five. They changed a little bit: a new point guard, a new center from the NBA. I expect they will play their best basketball. So we have to play our best basketball to have the chance to stay in the game and compete. We have to be better at turnovers and we have to have less moments where we lose the concentration. We may not allow them to make a run, because it would be very tough to come back."

Players

SLAUGHTER, MARCUS
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"Two road wins gave us good self-confidence because it’s always difficult to win on the road in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. But the most important is to win at home to protect home court advantage. Against Brose, we have to play smart and aggressive from the beginning, impose our play. We look forward to play again in our brand new Volkswagen Arena. At the first game there against CSKA we had a lot of good fans. We hope that we’ll have same atmosphere against Bamberg. I’m just adapting my role within the team. Wherever I play I have been the defensive player. I’ll keep on contributing that way."
HARRIS, ELIAS
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"We won the first game. But for sure, it will be a complete other matchup on Friday. I expect them to be more aggressive. I think they’ll try to play more with their big men. So, it’ll be a very tough game for us. But we don’t have to hide. We’ve shown in the past what we can play. For us it’s important not to look at the opponent but to play our type of basketball. We have to be one more time a team."

Bamberg downs Darussafaka to reach Top 16

Brose Baskets Bamberg became the third team to make it to the Top 16 from Group D by downing Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul 54-65 on the road on Friday. Slaughter ignited the crowd with a dunk and soon added a put-back basket to keep the hosts as close as 10-12. And even though Radosevic swished a mid-range jumper and Patrick Heckmann added a free throw for Brose, Bjelica singlehandedly brought Darussafaka even closer, 14-15. Darussafaka's defense stopped allowing easy shots, but Heckmann finished a three-chance Bamberg offense with a tip-in before free throws by Slaughter tied it 17-17 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Melli puts Bamberg ahead

Ender Arslan hit a technical free throw early in the second quarter for Darussafaka's first - and in the end, only - lead of the egame, because soon Bamberg brought more intensity to both ends of the court. Wilbekin sank a stop-and-pop jumper that Harris matched with a reverse layup. Gordon kept pacing Darussafaka with free throws and Slaughter provided a highlight with an alley-oop dunk which kept the hosts as close as 37-40. Heckmann shined with a three-point play and Slaughter dunked again, as the game turned into a physical battle. Both teams struggled to score until Theis stepped up with a put-back layup, good for a 39-45 Bamberg edge. Wanamaker fired in a wide-open three-pointer that forced Darussafaka to stop the game at 39-48. Theis finished a good team play with a layup and Redding made free throws to keep the hosts within 41-50 after 30 minutes.

Fourth quarter: Bamberg is in the Top 16!

Theis scored around the basket early in the fourth quarter, as Bamberg kept dominating the game with outstanding defense. A long rebound allowed Wanamaker to score at the other end, forcing Darussafaka to call timeout at 41-54. The hosts could not find the way to the basket for more than 3 minutes until Aldemir made a three-point play. Gordon soon added a bomb from downtown to being Darussafaka within 47-54. Theis stepped up with a big bomb himself, which Manu Markoishvili answered with a put-back basket, his first points. Free throws by Gordon got the hosts closer, 51-57, with over 3 minutes left. Janis Strelnieks, who had been scoreless until then, buried a critical three-pointer which Theis followed with a three-point play to seal the outcome, 51-63. Darussafaka kept trying but Bamberg had already cruised to a well-deserved, historical road win.

Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"First of all, congratulations to Brose. We didn't put enough heart into tonight's game. I'm very disappointed with some of our players. We didn't let Brose score more than usual, but our effort on offense was very insufficient. But it's useless to discuss technical issues when you don't put your 100 percent on the court. It's a job and you have to respect the rules of that job. If we keep on playing this way we won't be able to qualify to the Top 16 and we won't deserve to qualify."
TRINCHIERI, ANDREA
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"I believe that we played very good defense. We were solid and stable. Actually, we made some mistakes, but we always bounced back. On offense, we played as a team because none of our players had 20 points, but I believe Daniel Theis was very good. This is his first Euroleague season, he was very good on finding his right spacing on offense and I have good guards, so we passed the ball very well and Theis was very good today."
WANAMAKER, BRADLEY
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"The key point in this game was our defense. Then we managed to score at go-to moments on offense. Every season, my goal is the win games, to win championships. You don't always achieve those goals, but you have to go for them."
MELLI, NICOLO
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"We have been a team, that's the key. It was not a nice game but we won it with a great effort. It was a low-scoring game, but we came here to win and to go to the Top 16 with three games left. We achieved the goal, so we are very, very happy."
