THE TAKE

Fenerbahce Ulker will try to take a big step towards the Quarterfinal Playoffs when it hosts winless Aris TT Bank on Wednesday at the Abdi Ipekci Sports Hall in Istanbul, Turkey. The Turkish champs are 2-1 and in second place in Group E. Fener is coming off an exciting home win over Lietuvos Rytas, in which star guard Willie Solomon’s basket that seemed to have won the game at the end of regulation was waived off for being after the buzzer, so after gathering the players from the locker rooms and warming up again, Fenerbahce won it in overtime. Meanwhile Aris was blasted by 18 last week at home by group leader Tau Ceramica and with a 0-3 start that includes two home losses, head coach Gordon Herbert’s charges have little hope of advancing to the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Aris’s Top 16 woes began with a loss at the hands of Fener three weeks ago as Solomon stepped up with 23 points and big men Omer Asik and Semih Erden came off the bench to combine for 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting plus 7 blocked shots to intimidate in the paint. With Solomon now leading the Top 16 in scoring and a total of six players averaging at least 9 points per game, Asik atop the blocked shots charts and the team shooting a combined 44.4% from downtown, there are plenty of reasons to expect Fener to win at home. However Aris, which already won at the Abdi Ipekci this season by beating Fener rival Efes Pilsen in the regular season, has the talent and the pride to cause an upset. Star power forward Jeremiah Massey leads the Aris charge in the paint against the likes of Asik, Erden and Oguz Savas, while the backcourt of Darius Washington and Bracey Wright will attack Solomon, Damir Kaan and Tarence Kinsey. Still for Aris to have a real chance at the win it will need to have a fourth weapon blazing, with center Hanno Mottola or forwards Reyshawn Terry and Dimitris Tsaldaris the most likely options. Since this is a must-win game for the visitors, the tension should be high, which could translate into a tough game that goes down to the wire. If Aris is able to win, the 8 points it lost by in Thessaloniki become very relevant as the visitors will need to surpass that to have a good chance at overtaking Aris in the standings.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This is the last possibility for Aris TT Bank to come back in the group. So it simply seems more dangerous than before to play against them. From our point of view, a victory can help us to strengthen our chance for the next stage. At this moment, the thing is very important for us is the condition of my players. Finally we can play with 11 players with their 100% performance. This is good for us when we compare it with the previous games of the season. Against Aris, we have to play with good defense and to fight under the baskets for the whole game. At the same time, we should see our fans, 12,000 people packing Abdi Ipekci Arena to help the team. It’s really good to play with full support of fans behind you. It’s a really very important game for us, so they should come and support us."
HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"We still have chances to qualify. To be honest, I would like to prepare this game with at least a win in the previous three games, but we can still change our destiny. What is necessary is to have balance between our defense and offense during the whole game. I can justify a bad offensive performance, but not a defensive one, because you win games through defense. Both Aris and I are unbeaten in Turkey these last years. Maybe itʼs fate for us to win Turkish teams on the road, but to make this happen we have to stop Solomon and play as a team at every part of the game."

Players

SAVAS, OGUZ
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We are feeling more confident than before after the game against Lietuvos Rytas last week. We are taking the games one by one, as we will do against Aris TT Bank, too. We beat them in Thessaloniki with a good offensive game. But I think the most important thing for us is to play better in defense in this game. Aris TT Bank will be challenging for their chances until the end in this match. So this is what makes this game harder than the first one. I think if we have the great support of our fans once again, we can win the game."
KALAITZIS, GEORGIOS
Aris TT Bank
"We donʼt surrender! We are ready to fight for our last chances to make it to the playoffs, even though we have to play two of the three last games on the road. Itʼs true that we had many ups and downs during the first round of Top 16 and we didnʼt manage to grab at least a win at home. However, the only way to react is the victory on the road against Fenerbahce. After a pair of important wins in our domestic league, we are confident enough stand up in Istanbul and compete for the qualification."
Jeremiah Massey - Aris TT Bank Aris TT Bank registered its first win in Group E by edging Fenerbahce Ulker 59-60 in front of 11,000 fans at the Abdi Piecki Sports Hall on Wednesday night. Aris improved to 1-3 and grabbed its first Top 16 win this season. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce dropped to 2-2 and will at least tie for the second spot in this group at the end of this round. Jeremiah Massey paced the winners with 18 points and 8 rebounds, including the game-winning free throw with 9 seconds to go. Bracey Wright added 12 points on 5-for-6 two-point shooting for Aris. Willie Solomon and Omer Asik each had 13 points for Fenerbahce. Asik added 11 rebounds, 7 of them on the offensive end, and 5 blocks. Omer Onan had 12 points for the hosts, who trailed 16-25 early in the second quarter. Semih Erden and Onan brought the hosts within 32-34 at halftime. Hanno Mottola and an unstoppable Massey still kept Aris ahead, 45-50 after 30 minutes. Two quick triples by Onan gave Fenerbahce its first lead, 45-50, with seven minutes to go. The game went down to the wire, as Massey hit a foul shot for a 59-60 edge. Solomon missed a driving layup and Asik could not put the ball back in time to win it, as his last effort came after the buzzer.

Dimitris Tsaldaris needed just 4 seconds to fire in a corner triple, before the game was interrupted for almost 10 minutes due to a shot-clock problem. Wright sank a mid-range jumper and Vladimer Boisa nailed a wide open three-pointer for a 0-8 Aris lead. Fenerbahce had been scoreless for almost three minutes before Gasper Vidmar stepped up with a power layup. Wright kept pacing Aris with another jumper, which Vidmar matched with a driving layup. Massey found his first points on an easy layup and soon added a free throw to keep the guests ahead, 5-13. Asik stepped on court and immediately found a power layup, which Wright matched with a mid-range jumper. Asik shined again with a tip-in and Solomon added foul shots to get within 11-15. Massey followed a smooth move in the low post with a jump hook, but Onan kept Fenerbahce close with a floating jumper. Darius Washington hit from downtown before James White's driving layup brought the hosts within 15-22 after 10 minutes.

Omer Faruk Asik - Fenerbahce UlkerReyshawn Terry took over with a three-point play to keep Aris way ahead, 16-25, early in the second quarter. Fenerbahce kept running its offense through its big men, as Erden and Asik combined to make 3 of 4 free throws. Erden added an easy basket while Damir Kaan-Mrsic sank one from downtown to cause Aris to call timeout, 23-25, after a 7-0 Fener run. Mottola stepped up with a big triple and soon added a two-handed dunk, as Aris improved its defense. The hosts kept missing quick shots until Erden provided a highlight with a monster dunk, but head coach Bogdan Tanjevic called timeout to fix Fener's offense. Aris had trouble rebounding with Asik and Erden back on court. An unstoppable Asik hit free throws and had a big block on Washington that allowed Onan to run the floor and tie the game, 30-30, setting the crowd on fire. Wright took over with a big basket, which Erden erased with free throws. Massey beat the buzzer with a put-back layup for a 32-34 Aris edge at the break.

Fenerbahce kept following its game plan, with intense defense and trying to get its big men involved. It was Massey, however, who was the first to score after the break on a power layup. The hosts had gone scoreless for almost three minutes before Solomon stepped up with a driving layup, which Boisa matched in the other end. Fener kept struggling to score, however, committing several quick turnovers. Meanwhile, Massey picked up a loose ball, drew a foul and made free throws for a 34-40 Aris lead midway through the third quarter. Solomon struck from downtown, but Massey provided a highlight with an outstanding power dunk over Vidmar. Solomon kept pacing Fener with free throws but Mottola scored at the other end. Massey added another power basket, while at the other end Solomon kept getting to the foul line often. Kaan-Mrsic buried a three-pointer to get Fenerbahce within 43-46. Wright nailed another jumper and added free throws before Asik scored in the paint to fix the score at 45-50 after 30 minutes.

Bracey Wright - Aris TT BankOnan buried a three-pointer right at the start of the fourth quarter, but Mottola buried a six-meter jumper to keep Aris in charge, 48-52. Asik kept powering the offensive boards and made free throws, which Onan followed with another bomb from downtown to give Fenerbahce its first lead, 53-52, with seven minutes to go. Aris called a much-needed timeout and improved its defense with Massey back on court. Terry made free throws, but a foul shot by Onan tied the game again, 54-54. Fener struggled to even shoot in each possession now. Meanwhile, Terry sank a critical triple for a 54-57 Aris edge with four minutes remaining. Erden made foul shots, but a layup by Tsaldaris kept Aris ahead, 56-59. Fener missed 5 quick shots down the stretch, as Aris kept using long possessions. The guests called timeout in the final minute, however Solomon collected a steal, but immediately turned the ball over and sent Giorgios Kalaitzis to the line. Kalaitzis missed twice and then Solomon tied the game with a wild layup-plus-foul with 32 seconds to go. Washington missed from downtown, but Onan fouled Massey fighting for the long rebound. Massey made only 1 foul shots with 9 seconds to go, but Solomon missed a driving shot, Asik missed a put-back chance and scored after the buzzer, allowing Aris to escape with a major road win in thrilling fashion!

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It was a great opportunity for us and we let it slip from our hands. We are really very sad that we upset our great fans who packed Abdi Ipekci tonight. It would be a great advantage had we won this game, but we have nothing in our hands now. Still we have our chances, however. We will see what we can do in the last two games against Lietuvos Rytas on the road and Tau Ceramica at home. I hope we will recover from this loss soon."
HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"It was not our real face when we are losing the first three games of the Top 16 in our group. We are a challenging team and we weren't able to show our real physical toughness in those games. But tonight, for the first time in this round, we showed our real face of a challenging, tough team. We were able to keep Fenerbahce's offense limited. Especially our half court defense was excellent. We did our job very well, defending the weapons of our opponent like Willie Solomon and Tarence Kinsey. Our defense on Solomon was extremely well done by Giorgios Kalaitzis and Darius Washington. He is one of the ten best players of Euroleague and it was very important to not to let him repeat the performance of the first game that we played in Thessaloniki. We won this game not because of the quality of our players, but with a great team effort."

Players

ERDEN, SEMIH
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Unfortunately, we missed a great chance to make a big step towards the quarterfinals. Now we have to start from the beginning. We were not good enough to win the game but the game came to our hands in the last minute. There's nothing much to say, but we have to keep fighting for a space in the next stage."
TSALDARIS, DIMITRIOS
Aris TT Bank
"We are thinking now how things could be different for us if we had won against Fenerbahce in Thessaloniki. Anyway, this is a very strong win for us. We resume the tradition that we had of winning in Abdi İpekci. We were not perfect but today we were a real team. When you keep Fener to 59 points that says a lot about the way we played. And when we compare Fener as a team that scored 96 points in the first game, we can see how we were successful on defense. And also we liked very much to play in a full gym. And we didn't mind that the fans didn't support us. We like it anyway. Maybe it was better for us, like an extra motivation."
