THE TAKE

Prokom Trefl hosts Efes Pilsen on Thursday night in Sopot, Poland, in key Group A encounter for those teams and others around them. Prokom and Efes are involved with Dynamo Moscow in a three-way tie for fourth place, all with 3-4 records, and only five teams per group advance automatically to the Top 16. Prokom is coming off an uplifting 77-91 road win at Climamio Bologna in which Adam Wajcik exploded for a season-high 20 points. He was among several Prokom big men standing 2.04 meters or higher who combined to go 7-for-9 on three-point shots. Expect a similar tactic to be tried against Efes, which suffered its second straight defeat last week, going down 90-83 at Dynamo Moscow, despite a season-high 18 points from Ermal Kuqo. Efes edged Prokom 71-67 when these teams met on opening night, improving to 7-0 all-time against the Polish champs. The promising news for Prokom is that the opening week result was the closest one yet in the rivalry. Efes may have a new player in uniform when the teams take the court after signing Laron Profit this week, however even if he plays, it's doubtful whether he can have a big impact in his first game. Prokom center Huseyin Besok (9.7 ppg., 4.9 rpg.) may draw the most attention in this game as he goes up against the team he led to two Turkish League titles early in his career. However Besok has had less of a burden to shoulder recently as Michael Andersen has come alive in recent weeks and Tomas Masiulis (6.3 ppg., 5.4 rpg.) and Wojcik (8.9 ppg.) give Prokom plenty of frontcourt depth. Efes is equally packed upfront, with Marcus Haislip (12 ppg., 5.9 rpg., 2 bpg.) leading a group that includes Nikola Prkacin, Kuqo (9.3 ppg.) and Kerem Gonlum (6.9 ppg., 4.9 rpg. in 17 minutes). Most of Efes's scoring comes from the backcourt, with the trio of Drew Nicholas (14 ppg., 4.1 apg.), Horace Jenkins (10 ppg.) and Cuneyt Erden (8.5 ppg.). Prokom's backcourt, meanwhile, is hurting as shooter Christian Dalmau (11 ppg.) and playmakers Justin Hamilton and Rashid Atkins are nursing injuries that could affect their status for Thursday. Whether they play or not, Prokom will hope that another shooter, Donatas Slanina (10.3 ppg.), can keep the Efes defense honest. Prokm will no doubt be extra motivated for this clash as it looks to finally beat Efes. It will be interesting to see if Prokom again tries spreading the floor, as it did last week against Climamio, to let the big guys firing away from three-point land. The more those shots go in and the crowd gets behind Prokom, the more likely that it can end its losing streak against Efes.

Quotes Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"I know that we have lost all seven games against Efes Pilsen, but this season Efes is not as strong as before, so we have a big chance to beat them. Efes has many roster problems, and they have not been able so far to catch their rhythm in Euroleague games. We have to use that to our advantage, however we have problems with injuries. All our outside players - Dalmau, Hamilton and Atkins - are not ready to play 100 percent. I don't know what to do. Maybe Jeff Nordgaard should be a playmaker. We promise we will be fighting in order to regain trust from our fans. We have to forget about our Polish League loss to Turow and start to play better."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"The games get more crucial than others when the regular season makes its way toward the end. This is one of those big games. Prokom Trefl made a big investment this season and built a strong and dangerous team. It’s a very tough game waiting for us in Sopot. We will try to rely on our regular game as we always do, and will try to win the game. It’s a very important game for both teams and that makes the game doubly hard for each side."

Players

NORDGAARD, JEFF
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"After winning the game with Climamio I felt more optimistic before this game with Efes. Now, I don't know what to say. After our Polish League loss with Turow, I'm not so sure about our team. I hope this loss did not decrease our confidence. The game with Efes is really important for us. If we win it, we will be in a good position in terms of getting to the Top 16."
JENKINS, HORACE
Efes Pilsen
"We have had two unexpected losses at home. We have to compensate those losses by winning a crucial road game like this one. We are getting better day by day. Prokom Trefl challenged us more than we expected in the opening game of the season. So it shows that another tough game is waiting for us on the road. It’s also going to be determinant game for both teams in the group standings."
Horace jenkins - Efes Pilsen Efes Pilsen rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to register its eighth consecutive victory over Prokom Trefl 74-81 on the road in Sopot, Poland on Thursday in a key game for both teams in Group A. Efes used the victory to move into fourth place with a 4-4 record, dropping Prokom into a fifth-place tie with Le Mans, both at 3-5. Prokom led by as many as 13 late in the third quarter and by 57-47 early in the fourth before Efes exploded from the three-point line to take over. Cenk Akyol hit 2 triples in a row and Horace Jenkins a third to spark the comeback as Efes totalled 34 points in the final quarter. Jenkins led the winners with 23 points and Niksa Prkacin had 20, while Marcus Haislip registered a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Donatas Slanina fired in 17 points for Prokom, while Christian Dalmau put up 16 and Huseyin Besok 14.

Ermal Kuqo scored off the opening tip to get Efes started. Besok answered with a layup and those same two centers also traded next baskets before Jasmin Hukic made a first triple for hosts. Slanina closed Prokom's 8-0 run with a three-point play to make it 10-4. The visitors from Istanbul responded with 7 points in a row, however, including Marcus Haislip's triple and another pair of layups by Kuqo. On the next possession, Kuqo left with his second foul, but Prkacin replaced him more than well enough. Although Tomas Masiulis and Slanina pushed Prokom ahead again 15-11, Efes stayed just behind thanks to its advantage inside. Prkacin scored from the line and traded baskets with Besok before the opening quarter finished with Prokom ahead 17-14.

Efes continued forcing the game inside to Prkacin, who had the ball on every possession early in the second quarter. He obliged with a hook shot. Prokom couldn't find the answer for Prkacin, but used its own big men on offense as both Wojcik and Michael Andersen scored in a 7-0 run. Dalmau came off the bench to hit a triple for Prokom's biggest lead of the first half, 26-20. Efes quickly responded, however, with 5 consecutive points from Prkacin. Indeed, Gonlum was the only other Efes player to scored in the entire quarter, making a free throw before Prkacin equalled the score at 28-28. Besok closed the half with a basket to leave Prokom with a 30-28 advantage. By that time, Prkacin and Kuqo had combined for 24 points for Efes.

Donatas Slanina - Prokom TreflTo start the second half, Haislip dunked following Kuqo's assist before Masiulis fired his first triple for 33-30 Prokom lead. Haislip dominated with 2 power dunks to keep his team in touch at 35-34. Prokom then found its rhythm from long distance as Slanina and Masiulis combined for 3 triples and the hosts took the night's first double-digit advantage, 44-34. That forced an Efes timeout, which didn't change much as Besok closed Prokom's 11-0 run with a layup to make it 46-44. Jenkins finally responded with a three-point play for the guests, but Prokom continued to control the tempo. Dalmau and Hukic made 4 consecutive foul shots for a 50-37 lead, but that would be as far ahead as Prokom got. Efes was far from finished. Haislip and Jenkins proved that by combining for all the points in a 2-10 run that brought Efes back into the game at 54-47 after 30 minutes.

Slanina opened the last quarter with 3 shots from the foul line to restore Prokom's double-digit advantage at 57-47. Efes shooter Drew Nicholas finally made his first basket of the game, a bomb from a downtown, then Prkacin got back on the scoreboard with free throws. Jenkins extended the Efes run to 0-7 before Besok made a jumper for Prokom. But guests had found their rhythm and and used balanced offense now to take control.Layups from both Jenkins and Nicholas made it 59-58 and forced a Prokom timeout, but Efes had the momentum. Nicholas now equalled the score by making 1 of 2 free throws with 5 minutes left, making it a new ballgame. Wojcik pushed his team ahead again for the last time before Akyol, also scoreless until then, hit 2 triples on consecutive possessions and Jenkins added another. That quickly, it was 61-68, a lead that Efes would keep safe. Prokom, without Justin Hamilton since his second-quarter injury, finally got a basket from behind the arc by Dalmau, who was joined by Rashid Atkins to make it 70-73. Jenkins and Prkacin proved perfect from the line, however, and when Haislip combined another spectacular block with a monsteer dunk at the other end, Efes had beaten Prokom for the eighth time in as many games.

Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We played high-level defense in the third quarter. We seemed we were able to keep the advantage to the final buzzer. We had problems with the guards. All our three players played with injuries, Hamilton could not play at all in the second half. Though I would like to thank them for everything they did for our team. In the decisive moments we did not have a player who could control the tempo of the game. Efes had then concecutive triples. We could not respond."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"We are happy that tradition continues, but seriously I did not look at previous games, because this win was very importnat for us. We are fighting with Prokom for the Top 16. We knew before the game how tough it is to play in the Prokom gym. In the first half we played badly, especially outside players. We can only thank Niksa Prkacin that we were able to be in the game. In the third half we lost concentration and we played terrible. We were down by 13, but we were able to come back and I`m proud of it. We found our rhythm, hit three consecutive triples. It was the key moment."

Players

ATKINS, RASHID

"I don`t know what happenned. I have no idea what happened. For the first my time in my life my team was playing really good but lost everything in a while."
BESOK, HUSEYIN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We lost a very important game and we are very dissapointed, because we had anything under control for most of the time. And everything changed in just one minute, when Efes hit three consecutive triples. I'm very angry, because we played really well and I wanted this win against my former team. It was a very important victory for Efes and we are in a tough situation. But we cannot think about what happened anymore, because next week we are playing a very important game at Le Mans. We have to win there."
