The Take

These two teams meet for the first time ever, though ALBA head coach Sasa Obradovic knows a thing or two about Crvena Zvezda; the Belgrade native spent a chunk of his playing career with Zvezda. ALBA comes off an important road win and now stands 3-4 outside of Germany this season. Zvezda may be 0-4, but with back-to-back home games has the ability to climb back into the playoff hunt. The key to this game starts with Zvezda’s center Boban Marjanovic and ALBA’s attempts to stop him through Leon Radosevic and co. Power forwards Jamel McLean and Marko Banic will also have to contribute inside, while slowing Zvezda forwards Luka Mitrovic and Nikola Kalinic. Playmaker Marcus Williams and scorer Jaka Blazic are also vital organs for Zvezda; ALBA will turn to Cliff Hammonds, Reggie Redding and Alex Renfroe to take charge of those situations. The pressure is on with both teams knowing that a win Thursday could be a turning point in each team’s season.

ALBA Berlin

This will be the first meeting ever between ALBA Berlin and Crvena Zvezda.

Coach Sasa Obradovic played much of his career in a Crvena Zvezda uniform. He made his professional debut with the club in 1987 and remained there till 1993, the season in which he helped Zvezda end its championship drought. He left for Limoges, but after an unsuccessful spell there, Obradovic returned to help Zvezda win the 1994 Yugoslavian title. He then played three years for ALBA and eventually made his way back to Zvezda for the 1999-2000 season, though he missed most of that campaign due to injury.

Jamel McLean trails Olympiacos Piraeus star Vassilis for the Euroleague lead in fouls drawn with season by 1 with 89.

McLean has made 21 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Cliff Hammonds has made at least 1 three-pointer in 10 of his last 11 Euroleague games.

Marko Banic has made 17 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Alex Renfroe has made 14 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Quotes Head Coaches

RADONJIC, DEJAN
Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade
"ALBA is team with great athleticism among their players which allows them to play very tough. They play very intensely throughout the game and that is why we are aware that the game is not going to be an easy one. They have beat Barcelona and Galatasaray and have put themselves into good position for progressing further. Saša Obradović is obviously doing a great job. We must be at our best both in offense and defense in order to achieve our first victory in Top 16. This time we will play at Pionir hall and we know that the atmosphere is going to be amazing. That is very important to us because our team is the youngest in Euroleague. I just hope that we will play well enough in order to triumph."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
ALBA Berlin
"I am still cheering for Crvena Zvezda, whenever I can, and I am glad, that this club where I grew up, is doing better now than in the previous years. It will be a strange experience on Thursday, because for the first time I will coach against 'my club'. But this is one point. The other is, that a win for both teams will mean a lot. Playing this great combination of talent, size and athletism in Pionir instead of the Kombank arena will make things for my team even harder, because most of my players never have played in such an atmosphere."

Players

ZIRBES, MAIK
Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade
"ALBA is performing incredibly in the Top 16. They have already proven their quality by achieving two victories. We are very motivated to secure our first triumph in Top 16, but are aware that we must be very aggressive and completely focused in order to do that. We will also need the support from our fans. The game is played at Pionir hall and I am certain that the ambience will be great. We will do our best to put smiles on the faces of our fans once again."
KING, ALEX
ALBA Berlin
"It will be a difficult game for us. Belgrade is hosting us and have their enthusiastic crowd in their back. Crvena Zvezda has a young team with a lot of potential. We have to use our experience and play smart. Personally I’m looking forward to meet my colleague from the German national team, Maik Zirbes. He is performing well this season and has reached the Euroleague Top 16 for a reason."
