THE TAKE

Le Mans has the chance to clinch a Last 16 spot in Group B when it hosts Power Electronics Valencia on Tuesday. Power VLC is already the Group B champion. Meanwhile, Le Mans advances to the Last 16 with a win and goes home if it loses. Power VLC already sat out some of its best players last week. With Marko Marinovic and Rafa Martinez sidelined due to respective injuries, it is hard to predict coach Neven Spahija's rotation against Le Mans. Jose Simeon is set to see most minutes at point guard, with Nando De Colo backing him up. Simeon has an interesting test against a physical point guard in Zach Wright. With Martinez not expected to play, Thomas Kelati and Victor Claver will see most minutes at both wing spots, with little-used forwards Ivan Garcia and Toko Shengheila coming off the bench. Kelati will test his scoring skills against sharp shooter Dee Spencer. Claver may make the difference due to his athleticism, but Le Mans counts on Maleye Ndoye to stop him and pull the trigger from downtown. Antoine Diot will see minutes at both guard spots, with Guillaume Yango offering intensity off the bench. The battle in the paint will be interesting. Last week, Matt Nielsen and Kosta Perovic were sat out against Hemofarm Stada, and coach Spahija may opt to do the same against Le Mans. If so, Florent Pietrus and Serhiy Lishchuk will see most minutes around the baskets, with Claver and Garcia being used at power forward and youngster Giorgi Sharabidze as backup center. Pietrus is the right man to guard former Alphonso Ford Trophy winner Marc Salyers due to his mobility and intensity. Meanwhile, Lishchuk is set to have a tough battle against JP Batista and veteran big man Thierry Rupert. Le Mans must get Spencer and Salyers involved, so Wright must put the ball in the right hands at all time. Power VLC needs a big game from Claver and Kelati to stay unbeaten in the competition. Expect a big game in Le Mans on Tuesday.

JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"Our players are very motivated to win this final game against the leader of the group. Last week we gave ourselves the opportunity to move on to the next round so now we must finish the job. Hopefully, our determination will be superior to that of Valencia as they have too much individual talent to simply beat them in an open and easy game. We are going to prepare for a battle and hopefully our energy and the crowd's energy will push us in the right direction."

"A very important game. No other choice for us but winning this game to qualify to the Last 16. Last week, we got back our destiny in our hands with our win in Moscow. Winning against Valencia is mandatory but it is enough to go through next step. We will be ready, giving all that we have. Valencia is already qualified and first of the group but I think they don’t want to lose their first game in the competition. I hope our crowd will be hot and will bring us to the victory we need."
Dewarick Spencer - Le MansLe Mans Sarthe Basket made it to the Eurocup Last 16 by overwhelming Power Electronics Valencia 80-44 at home in Group B on Tuesday. Le Mans was second in Group B with a 3-3 record due to its tie-break advantage against Triumph Lyubertsy and will face Alba Berlin, Aris BSA 2003 and DKV Joventut in Last 16 Group I. Power VLC was already the Group B champion, finished it with a 5-1 record and is set to go against Unics Kazan, Galatasaray Cafe Crown and Hapoel Jerusalem in the next round. Le Mans handed Power VLC its worst loss ever in 158 games in European club competitions. The guests missed all of its 25 three-point attempts, a new all-time Eurocup record since the competition was created in 2003. Dee Spencer led the winners with 20 points. Marc Salyers added 14 while JP Batista had 11 for Le Mans. Victor Claver had 9 points for Power VLC, that played without Kosta Perovic, Thomas Kelati, Rafa Martinez and Nando De Colo. Spencer had 4 triples in a 28-8 opening run. Le Mans boosted its margin to 49-24 at halftime and than again to 67-39 after 30 minutes, enough to seal the outcome.

Salyers got Le Mans going with a jumper and Batista soon gave the hosts a 4-0 lead. Marko Marinovic shined with an off-balance layup that Batista matched in the other end. A three-point play by Spencer and a power basket by Zach Wright allowed Le Mans to boost its margin to 12-4. Charles Kahudi scored inside, Salyers added a hook shot and Spencer struck four times from downtown to make it a 20-point game, 28-8. Claver and Florent Pietrus stepped up for Power VLC but Antoine Diot and Guillaume Yango allowed Le Mans to stay way ahead, 32-12, after 10 minutes. Yango and Thierry Rupert dunked it early in the second quarter and a layup by Maleye Ndoye boosted the hosts' lead to 38-14. Power VLC could not find the way to the basket and Spencer soon made it a 28-point game, 42-14. Toko Shengelia and Hector Piquer sank free throws buy Salyers and Batista gave Le Mans another game-high lead at 47-18. Shengelia and Jose Simeon brought Power VLC within 49-24 as both teams headed back to the locker rooms.

Le Mans stayed on fire immediately after the break, as Salyers sank a jumper, Spencer nailed his fifth triple and Ndoye scored down low to set the crowd on fire at 56-24. Serhiy Lishchuk tried to change things for Power VLC with consecutive baskets but he didn't find much help around. Salyers and an unstoppable Ndoye struck from downtown and Kahudi soon joined the three-point shootout to boost the hosts' lead to 65-31. Claver scored inside, Pietrus dunked it and Matt Nielsen copied him soon after that to bring Power VLC within 67-39 after 30 minutes. Le Mans improved its defense early in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Diot and Rupert ignited a 8-0 run highlighted by Yango's dunk, good for a 75-39 Le Mans lead. Everything was said and done already, as all Le Mans fans were already celebrating that their team will keep fighting for Eurocup glory. Meanwhile, Power VLC will be back with a full lineup for its Last 16 game in two weeks' time.

Head Coaches

JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"Our goal was to contest everything tonight and play with a lot of physical combat and agressiveness. We managed to create our ideal rhythm and provoke foul trouble as we had hoped... and when the rotations came in we started to really dominate. Valencia is a great team and with a full roster will remain one of the favorites for the title. For Le Mans, this qualification shows a certain maturity in the Eurocup as we won the crucial final games to stay alive."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Power Electronics
"We had problems in this game. We played with only five players. Some of my players were sick before the game but we are supposed to play better. It's difficult to play without guards. Le Mans is a great team. Congratulations to them and I apologize to the fans. It's difficult to see the team without shots. Some players can't play on this level."
