THE TAKE

A critical game by all means in Group G takes place in Poland, where PGE Turow hosts Gran Canaria 2014 on Tuesday night. Turow has no chance to reach the next round, but can spoil Gran Canaria’s hopes. Granca will seal a ticket to the Last 16 if it wins, but can also advance with a loss depending on the result of the other Group G game between Panellinios and Nancy. Gran Canaria will reach the Last 16 with a loss if Nancy also loses and Nancy’s margin of defeat is at least 11 points more than Gran Canaria’s margin of defeat. Gran Canaria can win the group if it wins, Nancy wins and Gran Canaria’s margin of victory is at least 11 points more than Nancy’s margin of victory. To do so, Gran Canaria turns to a strong frontcourt to win the game, featuring Will McDonald, Sitapha Savane and James Augustine, complemented by three-point shooter Daniel Kickert. Savane has a key matchup against Turow star forward Michael Wright. Turow usually opens the floor with two mobile forwards in Robert Witka and Konrad Wysocki, using big man Brandon Wallace off the bench. Adam Wojcik will offer experience and defense against McDonald off the bench. Gran Canaria has its own scorer in Jaycee Carroll, who is set to get some help from defensive stopper Jim Moran, streak shooter Melvin Sanders and off-guard Josh Fisher. Carroll is ready for a scoring battle against TJ Thompson. Meanwhile, Moran is set to battle against Witka and Wysocki. Fisher may see playing time against Justin Gray due to his intensity and defense. Sanders faces a hard-nosed defender in Krzysztof Roszyk. Thompson will see most minutes at playmaker, but coach Andrej Urlep may use twin point guards with him and Michal Chilinsky together on court. Gran Canria runs its offense through veteran point guard Marcus Norris, with Tomas Bellas coming off the bench. Gran Canaria must stop Wright and get its big men involved to get an important win. Turow must play up-tempo and lock the defensive rebound against McDonald and Savane to finish its season with a smile.

Head Coaches

URLEP, ANDREJ
PGE Turow
"My team played two different halves. In the first one we played great on offense but poorly on defense and especially on the boards where they literally killed us. In the second half it was the opposite. It was clear that we have a problem with organizing offense. We need to think about adding a real playmaker to our squad which won’t be easy because at this time of the season it is extremely hard. But we will definitely try."
MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Gran Canaria 2014
"This game was very important for us. It was tied pretty much from the beginning to the end. The first half was good for both teams, in the second one we played better defense, we managed to stop their best player – Michael Wright – who I think was a little tired at the end."

Players

GRAY, JUSTIN
PGE Turow
"It was very hard for us coming into this game with a situation like this, but we came out really hard playing good offense but poor defense. In the second half it was the opposite. Congratulations to the Spanish team, tonight they were better."
NORRIS, MARCUS
Gran Canaria 2014
"We knew that we needed a win so we came out aggressively, fought hard and managed to take a lead from the beginning. We played great defense in the second half and dominated boards. We’re more than happy coming to the second round especially with our first road win in the Eurocup."
