THE TAKE

Elan Chalon needs a victory at home over Ovarense Aerosoles if it wants to reach the elimination round from Group B. Coach Gregor Beugnot's Chalon snapped a three-game losing streak by knocking off FMP on the road to improve to 3-4. The French club turned over the ball 20 times but held FMP to just 33% shooting from the field in the win. Small forward Rowan Barrett scored 19 points to lead four starters in double figures for Beugnot. However, Chalon can ill afford to lose at home against winless Ovarense as Beugnot's team is a game behind third placed Köln, which beat Elan twice this season. Look for Beugnot to keep his team focused on the task at hand. Ovarense meanwhile has been eliminated after its loss at Ventspils dropped its record to 0-7. Coach Mario Leite's team shot just 36% from the floor and watched Ventspils hit a blistering 60% from the field. Shooting guard Ben Reed did all he could with 22 points and 5 assists while power forward Gregory Stempin added 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. The Portuguese team is merely playing for pride now - as well as a chance to be a spoiler for other teams.

Elan Chalon remained alive for the elimination round by collecting an 88-66 victory at home over Ovarense Aerosoles in Group B. Darrel Mitchell had 16 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists to lead Chalon, which improved to 4-4 - one game behind Köln and Ventspils in fourth place with two games to go. Rowan Barrett added 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while Xavier Corosine poured in 19 points and Bryan Bracey chipped in 12 points. Elan next week welcomes Ventspils. Ovarense wasted 25 points from Cordell Henry and 22 from Ben Reed in falling to 0-8. Aerosoles goes for win number one next week at home against Besiktas. Ovarense trailed just 63-56 after three quarter before watching Chalon pull away in the fourth.

Ovarense jumped ahead 0-3 on Reed's long ball before Elan went up 6-3 on Phillipe Braud's basket. Henry knocked down a trey for Ovarense, which pulled ahead 6-10 on another basket by Reed. Barrett evened things at 12-12 with two triples only to see Miguel Miranda put Ovarense up 12-15 with a long ball at the end of the first quarter. Corosine opened the scoring the second period with a three-point play and then knocked down a trey, which was matched by Henry. Chalon could not pull away, going ahead 25-20 on Joachim Ekanga's long ball only to have Ovarense even things at 25-25. Elan then led 35-29 on Corosine's three-ball but Reed answered with two triples of his own for 35-35. Corosine's next three-pointer gave the hosts the lead 38-35 at the break. Chalon's Moussa Badiane scored first in the second half and the lead grew to 51-41 as Mitchell scored 7 points including a three-ball. Ovarense would not go away and Henry's basket cut the deficit to 53-50. But Ekanga made three free throws and Mitchell's score pushed the advantage back to 60-50. Reed's foul shots made it 62-56 going into the fourth. Badiane again started the scoring and Mitchell's three-ball made it 67-56. Two Barrett long bombs pushed the advantage to 73-58. Rui da Mota cut the deficit back to 73-62, but Elan put Ovarense away for good. Mitchell scored 7 points and Corosine drained a long ball in an 11-0 surge to build an 84-62 lead with two minutes left and the game well decided.
