THE TAKE

Maccabi Electra hosts Caja Laboral on Thursday at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv aiming to become the first Group C team to reach the Top 16. Maccabi enters the game in first place in the group with a 5-1 record and its only coming against Laboral. The visitors are tied for second with CSKA Moscow at 4-2 and have won their last two road games. All eyes in the game will be focused on Laboral forward Lior Eliyahu, who returns home to Israel and Maccabi where he spent the past three seasons. As one of Maccabi’s most popular players, Eliyahu is expected to be received well by the crowd and it will be interesting to see how that affects his focus. Eliyahu teams with Mirza Teletovic at power forward, giving head coach Dusko Ivanovic two different looks alongside star center Tiago Splitter. It was who led Laboral to an 86-81 win over Maccabi in Week 2 in Vitoria with 26 points. Maccabi will use D’Or Fischer, Yaniv Green and Maciej Lampe at different times and in different ways to try and contain Splitter. Fischer and Green will bring defense, while Lampe will try to draw fouls with his low-post game. Stephane Lasme figures to be head coach Pini Gershon’s man to stop Eliyahu, while the sweet-shooting David Bluthenthal matches up better with Teletovic. Maccabi rotates Andrew Wisniewski and Doron Perkins at point guard, where they’ll face Sean Singletary and Pau Ribas. Carl English provides scoring from the shooting guard spot, where he will square off against Alan Anderson, while Maccabi small forward Chuck Eidson takes on Laboral counterpart Fernando San Emeterio. Laboral’s Vladimir Micov and Maccabi’s Guy Pnini could both play important roles off the bench. The home-court advantage of Maccabi’s passionate fans always makes it the favorite in Tel Aviv, but the true key to this game could be at center. If Splitter shakes off the Maccabi big men like he did in October, it will be hard to beat Laboral. However if Gershon has a plan ready plus the fact that he has three centers available for the assignment allow the Israeli champs to quiet Splitter, it could be a long trip home for Laboral.

GAME NOTES

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv

Maccabi defeated Caja Laboral in the Euroleague title game in Moscow in 2005. Head coaches Pini Gershon and Dusko Ivanovic coached in that game and have since left and returned to their teams. Only Derrick Sharp and Yaniv Green of Maccabi and Tiago Splitter of Caja Laboral are still with the teams.

Maccabi also beat Caja Laboral in the 2006 Euroleague semifinal in Prague. Gershon, Green and Sharp were also on that Maccabi team, as was Splitter for Laboral.

Maccabi leads the league in steals (9.5 spg.) and blocked shots (4.7 bpg.) per game.

In last week’s win at Union Olimpija, the reserves outscored the starters 44-38.

D’Or Fischer scored a season-high 12 points in last week’s win over Union Olimpija.

David Bluthenthal scored a season-high 14 points in last week’s win over Union Olimpija.

Caja Laboral

Lior Eliyahu returns to Tel Aviv, where he spent the past three seasons playing for this week’s opponent, Maccabi Electra. Among the current Maccabi players Eliyahu has played with are Derrick Sharp, Yaniv Green, D’Or Fischer and Raviv Limonad.

Tiago Splitter was named Week 2 MVP after he scored a career-high 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting and grabbed 7 rebounds in Caja Laboral’s 86-81 home win over Maccabi.

Mirza Teletovic matched his season high with 17 points last week against Lottomatica Roma.

Teletovic has made at least 3 three-pointers in each of his last three games. He is shooting 47.6% from downtown over that stretch after shooting 23.5% in the first three games of the season.

Carl English played alongside Maccabi forward David Bluthenthal at Virtus Bologna during the 2005-06 season.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"We won a very important game last week in Ljubljana, but if we don't win this week at home against Caja Laboral we didn't do nothing. It is a very strong team, no matter who's on its injured list. If we win this week we would have two wins advantage over them and with three games to play in the regular season it will give us a lot of breathing room, before the difficult game in Moscow. Other than the game in Vitoria nobody scored against us more than 73 points, and I hope it will stay this way. In Nokia Arena we have the back up of our fans. They have more Euroleague experience than most of the Euroleague players, so our fans don't need me to tell them how important this game is."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"This game is very important in the race for the first place of the group. If they beat us, it will be almost a definitive step, as we would have a 2-game margin between us and them. The Nokia Arena is one of the most important courts in Europe. They count on a lot of players that can decide a game individually, but at the same time they play great team basketball. We shouldn't pay attention to what happened in the first game in Vitoria. If we want to be able to grab the win tomorrow we must allow them less points. We cannot expect a win there if we play the same defense we did in Vitoria. We shall be aware of their transition game. Maccabi is for sure a Final Four candidate."

Players

GREEN, YANIV
Maccabi Electra
"It's always strange to see an Israeli player play against Maccabi, like when Yotam Halperin played against us, and now it's Lior Eliyahu. We're all good friends and share a lot of memories, but it's professional basketball, and we have to approach it this way. Once the ball is in the air, nobody cares about passports. Everybody just want to win. It's all about winning this game to continue our good momentum and add another brick in the wall on the way to the title of this group. The only team we lost to so far was Caja Laboral, so now it's our time to show we can beat them. In the first game Tiago Splitter was the MVP of the week against us, and if we wish to be considered as a good defensive team, as we showed so far, we need to make sure it won't happen again."
RIBAS, PAU
Caja Laboral
"It's going to be a tough game, but we must come in with no pressure. They have more to lose than us. Playing there, in the Nokia Arena, always gives you an extra point in motivation. Winning in Israel would be great for the team, as we would improve our position at the standings but especially because it would give us an extra boost to face the following games."
Mirza Teletovic celebrates - Caja LaboralCaja Laboral swept the season series from Maccabi Electra and moved into a share of the top spot in Group C with an 82-91 victory on Thursday night at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. Mirza Teletovic had a career night, scoring a career-best 28 points on 8-for-14 three-point shooting to lead Laboral, which improved to 5-2 and will host Union Olimpija next week. Maccabi, which is also 5-2, travels to Moscow to face CSKA next week, which is also tied for the group lead. Teletovic helped Laboral pull away in the second quarter to take a 34-43 halftime lead, but Maccabi raced back to take a 50-49 lead in the third quarter. However triples from Teletovic and Carl English helped Laboral pull away again. The lead peaked at 15 in the fourth quarter and Maccabi’s late run was not enough. English went 6 for 11 from downtown for 18 points, while Stanko Barac and former Maccabi star Lior Eliyahu added 11 each for the winners. Chuck Eidson paced Maccabi with 19 points and 7 rebounds, Guy Pnini scored a career-high 18, Stephane Lasme posted 11 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks and D’Or Fischer added 10 points.

It was an electric beginning with both teams sprinting up and down the floor. Andrew Wisniewski got the hosts on the scoreboard first with a free throw before Teletovic drained a three-pointer. Eidson responded from downtown before English made it 4-6 with a three of his own. Eidson split the Laboral defense for a slam and then fed Fischer for a slam and a Maccabi lead. Eliyahu came on early to play alongside Teletovic, who drained his second three. English connected from behind the arc again to make it 8-12. The pace slowed as both teams started to run halfcourt plays. Lasme sank 2 free throws and followed that with a second chance basket to tie the score. Eliyahu scored on the offensive glass for his team’s first two-point basket. Alan Anderson fed Fischer for a two-handed alley-oop slam. English ht again from downtown, but Lasme converted a basket-plus-foul to keep the teams tied. Eliyahu did the same as Laboral took an 18-20 lead after 10 minutes.

Guy Pnini - Maccabi ElectraTeletovic assisted Barac to start the second quarter. Teletovic was feeling it as he blocked Fischer at one end and sank a three at the other to make it a 7-point lead. David Bluthenthal responded with a high-arcing jumper. Barac scored from the line and Eliyahu scored and drew a foul from Eidson as the visitors made it 20-29. Fischer hit a jumper and Elyahu missed a dunk, but the momentum remained with Laboral as Teletovic scored on a put back. Fischer tapped in an Anderson miss and Pnini made a scoop shot, but Eliyahu kept the visitors rolling, first with 2 free throws and then with a dish to an open Barac for a jumper. Barac soon added a free throw to stretch the Laboral lead to double figures. Pau Ribas drained a long jumper s the fans in Tel Aviv sat speechless. Anderson ended the Maccabi drought with 2 free throws and Pnini followed with a three to give the fans hope, but Ribas answered with a triple of his own. Anderson added a free throw and neither team scored on their final possessions of the half to leave Laboral up 34-43 at halftime.

Fischer rose high to slam home a Lasme miss and Eidson fired in a three to bring the hosts back. Sean Singletary made a circus shot off the top of the backboard plus the resulting foul shot, but Eidson connected again from downtown to narrow the gap to 4. Teletovic answered with a triple, however Pnini matched him. A Laboral timeout did not dampen the Maccabi spirits as Wisniewski found Pnini open for his third three-pointer. Lasme blocked Teletovic at one end and sank 2 free throws at the other to give Maccabi its first lead since the opening minutes, 50-49. English drilled a three – his fourth of the night – and Tiago Splitter scored his first points of the night as Laboral started to climb back. Teletovic added another triple as the visitors rebuilt a sizeable lead. Lasme scored on the offensive glass, but then committed his third foul and took a seat on the bench. Maciej Lampe powered a layup in only to see Teletovic drain a deep three for an 8-point lead. Teletovic sank another three from the corner – his seventh. Doron Perkins scored down low, but Ribas matched him. A Perkins free throw made it 57-67 with 10 minutes remaining.

Perkins began the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and Teletovic missed threes on back-to-back possessions, but Splitter stepped up in the paint. Caja Laboral head coach Dusko Ivanovic put Stanko Barac in for Teletovic alongside Splitter, causing Maccabi to go big too. The move created space for the shooters and English took advantage to drain a three-pointer. Fernando San Emeterio did the same as the visitors’ lead reached a new peak, 60-75. Yaniv Green, in to guard Splitter, drew the fourth foul from the All-Euroleague center. Eidson then drew Spliter’s fifth foul. Free throws from Green and Eidson and soon a Wisniewski layup brought the hosts back within single figures. Eidson drilled a triple from the top of the key to cap a 9-0 run as Ivanovic called another timeout. Barac hit a baseline jumper to quiet the crowd. English fired in another crucial triple to make it 70-80 with three minutes remaining. Eidson scored on the offensive glass, but Barac made a pair of free throws. Anderson scored with an acrobatic layup and made the resulting free throw, but time was running out. A Teletovic triple with 1:41 remaining seemed to seal the result. Wisniewski quickly made a layup and Maccabi began fouling to stop the clock. Singletary missed twice from the line and Pnini willed in a three-pointer to get within 80-85 with 78 seconds to play. Wisniewski sent Singletary back to the line and he made only 1, but David Bluthenthal missed a long three at the other end. San Emeterio made a free throw with 48.5 seconds left and another 2 with 36.8 left as Laboral hung on for a major road win.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"We scored 37% for two-points and they scored 52% from three, and with these numbers it's very difficult to win. We came back twice, but every time we made it back, we got a three-pointer because of mistakes on defense. Splitter and San Emeterio were the more important players on Caja Laboral in most games, but today they had Teletovic and English who stepped up and they deserve all the compliments for that. We tried to stop Splitter and we did it, but that wasn't enough. We made only 6 turnovers today, which I think is the best performance on that aspect for us the whole season, and that was another key, but it still wasn't enough. Teletovic is a very high-class shooter with a very quick release and he had a big day. The game in Moscow is more difficult than the game we had here, and if we didn't beat Laboral, then we'll have to play much, much better next week."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"We won this game thanks to very good defense throughout the entire game. We had a lot of patience in offense and that helped us a lot. Mirza Teletovic and Carl English are very good shooters, but shooters have ups and downs. Sometimes they shoot very well and sometimes they miss a lot of shots and today both my shooters were in a very good day. We prepared to play inside and Maccabi played very close to the big guys, so we pushed the ball in and out. It's a very open group. All top three teams have the same chances to win first place. Both us and Maccabi still have to play in Moscow, so this is where the group will be decided."

Players

PNINI, GUY
Maccabi Electra
"They had a crazy day from long distance. We knew they can shoot well and we needed to defend the arc, but we didn't do it well enough. We must keep our heads up. It's still a long season and there is a long road ahead of us, and we need to see how we recover from this loss and climb up. We had a lot of energy, but at this level, you also need to play well, not just with energy, and we didn't do that tonight."
ELIYAHU, LIOR
Caja Laboral
"I had great motivation, because as I said, it wasn't just any game for me. We played with a lot of energy. There's something in this arena that brings a lot of energy to whoever steps on court. I don't remember us taking so many three pointers so far this season, but most shots were open ones and it helped. It was more difficult to attack the rim today, and every shot in the paint was difficult. This win brings us very close to the top spot in the group, but there are still tough games, and we need to be careful not to make mistakes."
