THE TAKE

Maccabi Elite hosts Efes Pilsen on Thursday at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel, in a much-anticipated matchup for two Group B powers. Although the two clubs are traditional rivals, the reason for the excitement is the man on the Efes sideline, David Blatt. The head coach is very popular among Maccabi circles after spending the first half of the decade with the club. Blatt helped Maccabi win two European championships as an assistant coach and guided the club to the 2002 Euroleague Final Four as its head coach. This game marks the first time Blatt will coach against Maccabi since leaving the team in 2004. Another headline in Tel Aviv concerns the status of All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic's knee, which will cause him to miss several games. In his place, Esteban Batista could make his first start, while Marcus Fizer and Terrence Morris may be looked upon to provide more offensive firepower. Maccabi will need its big guys to produce, as the team has had trouble rebounding and ranks last in the league in that category. Efes hopes to have the answer for whatever look Maccabi head coach Oded Kattash throws at it. The visitors boast a deep frontline with Loren Woods, Andre Hutson, Ermal Kuqo and Kerem Gonlum. And small forward Kenny Gregory could make a big impact in the Efes transition game if his team controls the boards. Another Maccabi weakness has been its three-point shooting (24.1%), despite the fact that it has two great marksmen on the roster in Derrick Sharp and David Bluthenthal. Efes guard Drew Nicholas has made just one fewer triple this season than the entire Maccabi roster. As playmaker Scoonie Penn takes more of a role since his late signing with the team, the more open threes Nicholas and Serkan Erdogan are likely to see, too. Without Vujcic being there to run the offense from the low post, Vonteego Cummings, Will Bynum and Yotam Halperin will all need to help setting up the other big men. Maccabi arrives with plenty of pressure after suffering an 18-point loss last week at Lietuvos Rytas. Coming off a loss, being without a superstar and facing a former mentor is the perfect storm for head coach Oded Kattash and Co., who will have the opportunity to show what they are made of in this game. For the visitors, who topped Armani Jeans Milano last week, a road win in Tel Aviv would send a message that the club is coming together and ready to challenge for the Group B leadership. There is no favorite in this encounter, which has the potential to be one of the most emotional and exciting basketball games of the week.

Quotes Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"It's a very critical game for us. We play at home, and in this game it doesn't matter who's standing on the other side. Even if it's Efes Pilsen – one of the strongest teams in our group – we still must win the game. We received a big hit with Vujcic's injury. It's bad luck but we need to now how to handle that. If we try to find a good side in this bad situation then this is a chance for other players. We have a deep bench and a lot of talented big guys. This is their time to prove themselves and show they can play as we expect them to and to step up. They can show everybody that we can win even without Nikola. It will be a very exciting night for everybody because our friend David Blatt will be on the sidelines with Efes. It's the first time he'll play against Maccabi in Nokia Arena, so we'll give him a warm welcome, but obviously we will do our best to win this game."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"Maccabi is a very very great traditional rival of Efes Pilsen. They also have a very strong roster and many many options offensively and defensively. They are also a fairly new team with many new players on the roster. And like any new team, they have had their ups and downs during the beginning of the season. Certainly, this is the team to be reckoned with, as they have great potential and of course their wonderful tradition and great fans behind them. We're excited to be coming to Tel Aviv for what should be and oustanding basketball game. Personally it's my first time back to Tel Aviv for an offical game, playing aganist a team that was my home for many years. I look forward to it."

CUMMINGS, VONTEEGO

"This is a very important game for us. We need to win this game to show that the big loss in the last game isn't our real game. Efes is one of the toughest teams in the group, but we want to show we are one of the strong teams in the group as well, and if we beat them it will be like sending a message out. Nikola is very important for us, and his injury is a big hit, but we want to show we can still play good without him. We all need to step up and cover for his absence. We must improve our defense and rebound if we want to win this game, because that's what prevented us from staying in the game last week."
PENN, SCOONIE
Efes Pilsen
"It's really one of the most important away games in the Euroleague for any team travelling to Tel Aviv to play with Maccabi. They really have great tradition, basketball culture, influenced in their heart and soul. I'm always impressed about the way the fans there support their team. They are still struggling to become a good team because they have many new players on the team, like we do. For that reason, it's going to be an extremely interesting game for each side. Of course, we will try with everything we have to take our first away win."
Esteban Batista - Maccabi Elite A big fourth quarter from Esteban Batista lifted Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv to a 73-67 win over Efes Pilsen on Thursday night at Nokia Arena. The Group B clash was hyped as Efes Pilsen head coach David Blatt’s return to the arena to face his old team, but the Uruguayan center made the difference with 8 points in the last 10 minutes. Batista scored 6 in an 11-0 run that spanned the end of the third quarter and into the fourth as Maccabi fought back from a 46-55 deficit to improve to 2-1. Maccabi, playing without injured superstar center Nikola Vujcic, got 14 points in 17 minutes from Batista and Terence Morris had 11 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. The Israeli champs travel to face Unicaja next week. Efes, which dropped to 1-2, hosts Le Mans. Before the game, Maccabi honored Blatt for his achievements since leaving the club, but once the game started, it was all about winning. The game was close for almost the entire evening, with neither team ever holding a double-digit lead. But in the end, it was Batista and Morris who made the difference as Maccabi won its fifth straight home game. Lior Eliyahu added 13 points and Will Bynum posted 10 points and 5 assists for the winners. Andre Hutson led Efes with 21 points, but had only 3 in the second half. Drew Nicholas added 14 points and 6 assists, Kenny Gregory had 12 and Loren Woods finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Drew Nicholas - Efes PilsenEfes Pilsen won the opening tip, but it was Maccabi that scored first when Marcus Fizer hit a fade-away foul-line jumper. Gregory matched him and Kerem Gonlum scored inside, but Fizer tied it inside. Nicholas three-point play kept the visitors ahead only for Eliyahu to step up for Maccabi with a spin move and then a slam to ignite the crowd. Hutson tied it at 11-11 and then Gregory silenced the crowd with a follow-up slam. But a Vonteego Cummings triple and a Will Bynum to Eliyahu alley-oop made it 16-13. The visitors took a timeout to regroup and soon after tied the score again on a Hutson baseline jumper. Maccabi captain Derrick Sharp’s next basket was also matched by Hutson, as the first period ended 18-18.

Terence Morris worked the offensive glass to get his first points as the second period began. The basket gave him confidence as he went inside for another score. On the other end, Fizer fouled Hutson and was called for a technical, allowing Hutson to tie the score with 4 free throws. Batista came off the bench to score his first Euroleague basket. Both teams went with three guard lineups, which didn’t result in a quicker game. Sharp’s triple put Maccabi up 5 and when Eliyahu soared in for a finger roll, Blatt took another timeout. Hutson ended Maccabi’s 7-0 run with two free throws and continued to play a role on both ends of the floor. Ermal Kuqo tied it at 29-29 and the teams traded baskets until Bynum put Maccabi up 36-35 with a free throw at the end of the first half.

Bynum’s pull-up jumper started Maccabi off in the third period and then set Batista up inside as the sell-out crowd got louder. Hutson missed a pair of shots and Eliyahu made it 41-35 from the line. Gregory beat the shot clock for Efes’s first points of the period and Loren Woods soon had the visitors within 1 after a three-point play. Nicholas then put Efes ahead with a runner and added to the lead with a jumper. Efes continued to move ahead as a powerful Woods slam capped a 1-9 run for the visitors for a 44-48 advantage. Maccabi tried Alex Garcia for answers, but it was Woods again with an offensive rebound and a bucket as Efes went up 6. Neither Maccabi’s timeout or Morris’s shot-blocking ability changed much as Scoonie Penn drilled a triple as the shot clock expired, which was like a dagger through the hearts of the home fans. Still Maccabi played on and free throws by Morris and a Yotam Halperin drive made it 50-55 heading into the fourth quarter.

Lior Eliyahu - Maccabi EliteEliyahu made a free throw early in the period and Batista later twisted his way for a clutch layup as Maccabi closed the gap. As Efes started getting cold, Batista tied it and then put Maccabi up 57-55. Batista scored 6 straight during the 11-0 run that put the Israeli champs on top. Efes beared own and at the end of a long attack, which included two fouls drawn, Hutson tied it with a dunk. Batista continued to shine with a move past Woods for a hoop, but Nicholas bettered that with a triple. However Sharp also had a three up his sleeve as the game remained close. Bynum put Maccabi up 64-62 from the line, but Gonlum matched that with a basket in the paint. Eliyahu then put Maccabi up from the line, only this time an Efes turnover led to a Bynum jumper, a 4-point lead and a visiting team timeout. Penn’s drive met Morris’s right hand and a minute later Morris shined again with a clutch three-pointer that made it 71-65. Morris fouled out on the next play as Gregory brought his team within 4. Maccabi tried to milk the clock and Cummings eventually went to the line with 35 seconds remaining. His two foul shots seemed to seal the deal and any hope Efes had evaporated when Penn missed, leaving the hosts to celebrate a 73-67 win.

Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"The good things I take from this game is the big desire we showed after the first two games. At the end of the pre-game talk I told the players not to care about the score, but to try to win the rebounds battle. We ourrebounded them 43-34 and that says it all. We proved we can play better defense and be more aggressive. That is what wins games. For many minutes we didn't play good basketball. We didn't make too many simple plays, and it comes from big pressure and lack of confidence that I hope will arrive in the future. Batista took the chance and showed he can help us. He will be better than this once he adjusts to the European game. A team that wants to compete in the higher levels of the Euroleague needs a deep bench. It was a very aggressive game, and some of our players got into foul trouble. This win was very, very important for us."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"It was a very intense and tough game. As some of our key players aren't in top shape, we tried to control the tempo of the game and take Maccabi to our style. We were fine and did that for most of the game, but in the final minutes Maccabi managed to take over and that's why they won the game."

Players

BATISTA, ESTEBAN
Maccabi Elite
"I worked hard for this and I showed what I can do, but I can do more things. There was a great atmosphere and that helped me to get in the game. I am happy I was able to help the team win this game. It is very exciting for me."
ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Elite

"We gave a big push in the last quarter, everybody, and it paid off. It was a low scoring game, and both teams played good defense, so it was difficult to get in the paint. We won thanks to our big fourth quarter. Batista made a great job today and still has a lot to give us in the future."

NICHOLAS, DREW
Efes Pilsen
"We knew coming here that this is a tough place to play. This is my first time in Nokia Arena and now I understand what people were telling me. The fans were like Maccabi's sixth player. We played well in the first part of the game, and entered the last minutes close, but our last shots didn't get in and Maccabi used that."
