THE TAKE

The Greek champs and the Italian champs will meet in Game 1 of a promising best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoffs series on Tuesday in Athens when Panathinaikos hosts Montepaschi Siena. The two teams have had the Final Four as their target all season long, but only one can survive this final test. Panathinaikos and Montepaschi met twice in the regular season with the home team winning by 5 each time. Nikola Pekovic and Antonis Fotsis scored 14 points apiece as the Greens won 81-76 in November. Terrell McIntyre scored 21 to lead Siena to an 82-77 win in January. Both teams enter the series without one of their most important players. Panathinaikos guard and perennial Best Defender Award winner Dimitris Diamantidis is expected to miss at least the first two games of the series with a quadriceps tear in his left thigh. Montepaschi is without All-Euroleague big man Ksistof Lavrinovic who broke his hand. How their absences affect their teams could be key to the Game 1 outcome. Even without Diamantidis, Panathinaikos boasts a deep backcourt with Vassilis Spanoulis, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Drew Nicholas and Dusan Kecman, however Diamantidis was the natural answer to the question of whom will guard Montepaschi star McIntyre. Panathinaikos head coach Zeljko Obradovic will need a new plan to stop McIntyre as well as backup Morris Finley and shooting guards Henry Domercant and Rimas Kaukenas. Meanwhile Lavrinovic’s absence leaves Montpepaschi head coach Simone Pianigiani with Tomas Ress as his only experienced big man behind starters Ben Eze and Shaun Stonerook. They must contend in the paint with Pekovic, Fotsis, Mike Batiste and Kostas Tsartsaris. At small forward, Siena pits Romain Sato against Stratos Perperoglou of the Greens. Thus far Montepaschi has done well without Lavrinovic, using young Luca Lechthaler at times while shifting Sato to power forward at others. However that could be a problem against Panathinaikos’s bigger and more experienced players. Accordingly, if Eze or Stonerook encounter foul trouble Montepaschi could be in a hole. Siena could try to turn the tables and run on the Greens, knowing that without Diamantidis it will be tough to stop McIntyre from powering his team in transition. Therefore Panathinaikos must slow the pace, limit its turnovers and control the glass to make maximum use of its home-court advantage from the start.

GAME NOTES

Panathinaikos
  • Guard Sarunas Jasikevicius is just 1 steal shy of the 100-steal plateau for his Euroleague career.
  • Guard Drew Nicholas needs 4 more points to reach the 1,000-point plateau for his Euroleague career.
  • Power forward Antonis Fotsis and Montepaschi guard Henry Domercant were teammates at Dynamo Moscow last season, helping the club reach the ULEB Cup semifinals.
  • Jasikevicius was a teammate of Montepaschi big man Ksistof Lavrinovic and guard Rimas Kaukenas on the Lithuanian Olympic team last summer. Jasikevicius and Lavrinovic were also teammates on the Lithuanian side that won the 2003 European championships in Sweden.
  • Big man Mike Batiste scored a season-high 28 points against Montepaschi when they met in January.
Montepaschi Siena
  • All-Euroleague playmaker Terrell McIntyre has made at least 1 three-pointer in 12 straight appearances.
  • Guard Henry Domercant has made his last 19 free throws over a space on nine games. He is shooting 92.3% from the line for the season.
  • Guard Henry Domercant matched his Euroleague career high with 29 points against Panathinaikos in an April 2005 Quarterfinal Playoff game. Domercant, then with Efes Pilsen, scored 29 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a 102-96 overtime loss at OAKA. Current Panathinaikos swingman Dusan Kecman was a teammate of Domercant’s on that team.
  • Ariel McDonald spent two seasons playing for Panathinaikos, winning two Greek championships and one Greek Cup. Aside from head coach Zeljko Obradovic, McDonald will be reunited with former teammates Fragiskos Alvertis, Mike Batiste, Nikos Hatzivrettas, Dusan Sakota and Kostas Tsartsaris.
  • Reserve shooting guard Marco Carraretto set Euroleague career bests in points and three-point shooting when he went 5 for 5 from downtown and finished with 15 points in Montepaschi’s win over Panathinaikos in January.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"We are facing a serious team that we know and they know us very well, too. We played against them twice during the regular season sharing wins, but the playoffs have a different psychology and we have to adjust to this situation. Both teams suffer injuries, as Siena lost Lavrinovic and we lost Diamantidis, but they had an important period without Lavrinovic and they managed to keep their game quite unaffected giving their perimeter players more efforts and involving Stonerook more. Meanwhile, Panathinaikos has many important players to cover Diamantidis' absence and I am sure everybody will step up giving the best performance possible. In a hot arena like OAKA, I think we will be able to get the first win."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"It's an incredible challenge, giving big stimulus. These are the Euroleague playoffs, they have an amazing atmosphere, they give special emotions. We know it will be tough to face Panathinaikos on their court, 20,000 fans at OAKA are something special pushing the home team, but we'll receive extra motivations from them. We're not at our best, Lavrinovic is travelling with us but he won't play, but we'll do our best to win games and reach an otstanding goals, but I think it's already a great target to be here again."

BATISTE, MIKE
Panathinaikos
"When its playoffs time, you always prepare yourself for the maximum number of games. We are facing Montepachi Siena in a best-of-five series and of course we have the confidence we can go to the Final Four. To make that happen, there is only one way; not to commit 27 turnovers like we did in Siena during the regular season game. We must play aggressive defense to stop danger number one Terrell McIntyre, as he is expected to have a bigger offensive role due to Lavrinovic's absence. Meanwhile, our team suffers Diamantidis' injury too, so the rest of the guys will have to fight even harder to cover that loss. As for the home advantage that we have, it is important but doesn't guarantee anything."
STONEROOK, SHAUN
Montepaschi Siena
"It's exciting to be here for playing the Euroleague playoffs, and more is going to start in Athens at OAKA against a team like Panathinaikos. We're here to win games and do our best to advance to the next round, but we also know will face a great team, but we have confidence in our team organization and pride. It'll be a tough and long series, with both teams having the same goal!"
Nikola Pekovic - PanathinaikosUsing all of its big-game experience, Panathinaikos brushed off a late rally to defeat Montepaschi Siena 90-85 in Game 1 of their best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoffs series on Tuesday before 18,000 happy fans in Athens. Game 2 is also at OAKA, the Panathinaikos home court, on Thursday. With both teams suffering key injuries - Dimitris Diamantidis for the Greens, Ksistof Lavrinovic for Montepaschi - Panathinaikos held up stronger where its star was missing and got much more offensive punch from its bench, 39 to 7. Big man Nikola Pekovic ruled the paint with 21 points for the winners, while Vassilis Spanoulis added 14 and 6 assists. Drew Nicholas chipped in 21 points, while Mike Batiste had 12 and Antonis Fotsis 11 and a team-high 7 rebounds. Montepaschi, which rallied to within 76-74 with under 5 minutes left, but 2 triples by Fotsis, another by Drew and a three-point play from Pekovic were worth a 12-3 run that decided the game at 88-77. Montepaschi got a monster game from Romain Sato, who had 29 points, 9 rebounds, while Terrell McIntyre followed closely with 27 points and 6 assists. Besides them, however, only Rimas Kaukenas broke into double digits, with 13 points.

Romain Sato - Montepaschi SienaIn front of a packed house, both teams came out empty-handed early due to nerves and strong defense. Eventually, Nicholas unleashed a triple to get the scoreboard rolling. For Montepaschi, Benjamin Eze passed an offensive rebound to Sato for a three-point play to tie. After Nicholas made only 1 of 3 free throws, Sato loaded his pistol from the arc for Montepaschi's first lead, 4-6 lead. Batiste worked his way inside and for a turnaround jumper and soon added free throws at 10-6. The guests struggled from the three-point line, shooting just 1-for-8, and Spanoulis took advantage by driving and dishing to Pekovic for a 13-6 lead. Sato offered Montepaschi much-needed spark as he stole and bolted on a fastbreak. Nikos Hatzivrettas knocked down a triple from the corner and Pekovic slammed home a great pass from Sarunas Jasikevicius at 18-10. Montepaschi did not back down, though, as Domercant buried a tough jumper and the free throw that came with it, cutting the difference to 18-13. The game speed picked up as Stratos Perperoglou went coast-to-coast for a contested layup as the score hit 22-15. Sato and Terrell McIntyre hit free throws after that, but the Greens were still in command 23-18 after 10 minutes.

Perperoglou opened the second quarter with free throws that Kaukenas answered with back-to-back baskets to make it 28-24. Nicholas upped the ante, assisting Batiste on a two-handed dunk and nailing a triple as Panathinaikos broke ahead 35-26. Spanoulis then stripped McIntyre and finished the break to forge the first double-digit lead, 37-26. After a Montepaschi timeout, Stonerook drilled a three-pointer, but it didn't dim the OAKA "Factory of Noise". Montepaschi unlocked the Panathinaikos defense again as McIntyre slashed to the basket for a 37-31 score. Then, after a basket by Spanoulis, Montepaschi's magnificent point guard came up big again with an assist to Sato. Nicholas converted 3 free throws, however, that were good for a 42-33 Panathinaikos advantage. Montepaschi go-to guy Sato responded with free throws before Jasikevicius made a highlight-reel pass for another Batiste dunk that, despite McIntyre's three-point shot, kept the Greens in front 44-38 at halftime.

Mike Batiste - PanathinaikosThe second half commenced with Montepaschi turning the tide quickly in its favor. McIntyre knocked down a jumper and then undid the Greens' defense with his trademark flashy drive. As Panathinaikos slept, Kaukenas tied the game 44-44 and provoked an urgent timeout by Greens boss Zeljko Obradovic. Spanouls offered some breathing space with a jumper, and as both teams picked up their defense to asphyxiating levels, Panathinaikos refused to give up the lead thanks to offensive rebounds by Kostas Tsartsaris and Batiste. Pekovic joined the fun with consecutive baskets as Panathinaikos burst in front 54-48. Out of a Montepaschi timeout, Stonerook buried a triple only to be copied by Spanoulis. Then Fotsis swatted away Eze's layup attempt, yet McIntyre was too good to surrender. With the score at 57-53, Spanoulis hit another triple to keep the guests in catch-up mode. Stonerook bricked an open triple and then, with the clock ticking down, Batiste hit a lucky layup for a 62-53 Panathinaikos edge after 30 minutes.

To open the final quarter, Kaukenas quickly trimmed the lead to 6 points, but Panathinaikos stopped the slide with a 5-0 run to a 67-56 advantage. Marco Carraretto scored off a wild pass by McIntyre and in the next possession Sato drilled a triple to keep alive Montepaschi's chances for a takeover, but Jasikevicius tried to shut the door with a score at 71-61. Sato and McIntyre made one more stand, trimming the difference to 73-70 with 5:13 remaining. Pekovic answered for the Greens with a three-point play but Montepaschi followed McIntyre, whose next three-pointer pulled the guests within 76-74 and momentarily silenced the crowd. Not for long. Fotsis and Nicholas retorted with their huge back-to-back three-point bombs to make it 82-74 with 2:43 minutes left. After a Montepaschi timeout, another basket and the subsequent free throw by Pekovic send the noise level off the meter and the margin to double-digit territory, however McIntyre was not willing to go down without a valiant fight and closed the gap to 85-77. Fotsis loaded his pistol and gunned from downtown, thus giving the Greens a crucial 88-77 edge down the stretch. Mcintyre's triple cut the lead to 88-82 with 25 seconds left, yet Montepaschi ran out of time and Panathinaikos opened the series with a 90-85 victory.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was an excellent game tonight. We played a good first half. The only problem was Siena's offensive rebounds. Especially since Siena was playing with four perimeter players for most of the game. In the second half we started really bad and Siena scored 6 unanswered points before we even committed a foul. At the end of the game, which was the most important period, we had good ball circulation and we hit some really nice shots and made big plays. It's very important to take the series to a 2-0 lead. So we have to forget the first game and concentrate on the next one. I also want to thank the fans for the wonderful atmosphere they created."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"It was difficult for us tonight. It was difficult for our big men to match up against the frontcourt of Panathinaikos, especially since we started the game in foul trouble. So, we had to try many different things in defense: We played zone, we played with four guards in our lineup, we were forced to play with [Romain] Sato as our power forward... We played with pride tonight and tried to believe that we could win. That's why I'm proud of my players. We didn’t win because we missed some crucial shots in the last minutes of the game. We were really close to Panathinaikos, but in the end they scored two very important three-point shots and we didn't. Now, we should move on, because it’s the playoffs. Whether you win or you lose, you have to move on instantly."

Players

PEKOVIC, NIKOLA
Panathinaikos
"Siena played an up-tempo game and was very effective in the open court. It was a very tough match, something we expected. What's important is that we got the win tonight, however once again we lost our composure and let our opponent rally back. We should be very careful to not allow this to happen in future games. We'll learn a lot of things from this game. Life is always difficult without Dimitris Diamantidis on the court, but we managed to grab the win. On Thursday I expect a sellout crowd that will create some fantastic atmosphere."
PERPEROGLOU, STRATOS
Panathinaikos
"Due to Lavrinovic's absence, Siena was forced to use small lineups tonight. They were much quicker tonight, surprisingly they won the battle of rebounds and Sato played a great match. We should contain them much better in the next game."
