THE TAKE

SLUC Nancy looks to bounce back from a tough road loss, but it won’t be easy as the French champion hosts Panathinaikos on Wednesday at the Jean Weille Sports Palace. Nancy has had a rough start to its Euroleague debut season, losing its first two games by a combined 57 points. Meanwhile the Greens are coming off their worst Euroleague loss in over five years. Panathinaikos fell 90-66 last week at Regal FC Barcelona and head coach Zeljko Obradovic will not allow his troops to go down without a fight this time. This will be the first-ever meeting between the clubs. Nancy prepared well for the Euroleague season by brining in a number of experienced players as well as some talented newcomers, but the chemistry has not clicked yet. The top performers thus far have been big man Cyril Julian and Lamayne Wilson. However do-tit-all small forward Ricardo Greer and high-energy guard John Cox have not yet produces as hoped. Nancy needs both its perimeter players and those in the paint to improve on recent performances as the team ranks last in the Euroleague this season in points scored (58 ppg.), two-point shooting (36%), assists (7.5 apg.) and fouls committed (13 per game). Those numbers simply won’t do against a focused Panathinaikos. The Greens feature a deep and dangerous backcourt led by Dimitris Diamantidis, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Drew Nicholas, that will try to overpower Cox, Jeff and Ricardo Greer and Steed Tchicamboud. Small forward Stratos Perperoglou adds size to the backcourt, which could come in handy in guarding point forward Ricardo Greer. Inside, Julian will need Wilson, Rod Benson and Victor Samnick to help him against Panathinaikos’s front court aces Mike Batiste, Nikola Pekovic and Antonis Fotsis, to name a few. Because of its depth, Panathinaikos players can afford to play aggressive defense, which translates into the second-most fouls committed this season (47). Several things went wrong for the Greens last week: the club was outrebounded 36-23, top inside scorer Nikola Pekovic fouled out in 18 minutes and the club shot poorly overall. Nancy won’t be expecting those things to go wrong again, so head coach Jean-Luc Monschau’s men will have to give their all to find other ways to upset the Greens, who enter the game as the clear favorites to earn their first road win of the season.

GAME QUOTES

SLUC Nancy
  • Only one player on the current Nancy roster, forward Michel Morandais, has faced Panathinaikos before in a Euroleague game. Morandais scored 14 points for Barcelona in a 76-66 loss in Athens in November of last season.
  • Ricardo Greer is second in the Euroleague this season with 14 fouls drawn in two games. He has drawn 125 fouls in 35 career Euroleague games.
  • Panathinaikos will be the third club from Athens that Nancy has faced. It beat AEK Athens twice in the 2006-07 ULEB Cup and lost to Maroussi twice in the 2003-04 Fiba Europe League.
  • Big man Cyril Julian scored 17 points in Nancy’s loss last week in Poland, marking the most he has ever scored in a Euroleague road game.
Panathinaikos
  • Guard Sarunas Jasikevicius trails the legendary Dejan Bodiroga by just 3 points for 10th place on the all-time Euroleague Basketball scoring charts. “Saras” has scored 1,605 points in 115 career Euroleague games.
  • Forward Mike Batiste is 4 points behind Jorge Garbajosa for 20th place on the all-time Euroleague scoring charts. He enters this week’s game with 1363 career points.
  • Dimitris Diamantidis trails Jorge Garbajosa by 3 steals for fifth place all-time in Euroleague Basketball. He enters the game with 190 career steals.
  • In Panathinaikos’s last trip to France, the Greens set the Euroleague record for the biggest win by a visiting team in competition history. Panathinaikos blasted Chorale Roanne 83-123 on November 21 of last season. Eight Panathinaikos players from that game are still with the club.
  • Last week’s 66-90 loss to Barcelona marked the second biggest defeat for Panathinaikos in the Obradovic era. Since the legendary coach took over in 1999, the Greens had lost by a bigger margin only once, 63-88, against Skipper Bologna in March 2003.

Quotes Head Coaches

MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
SLUC Nancy
"After Barcelona in Nancy, here comes Panathinakos! For sure we can say that our fans are lucky because they're beginning with what's best in Europe! But for the team itself on the court, this is a tremendous challenge: there are stars at each position and a star coach to lead them. Under these conditions, we can only commit ourselves to put all our heart into the match."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"After a heavy loss in Barcelona last week, the team worked hard and all the players understood that they have to play seriously and motivated. They performed with concentration against Panionios in the Greek League and we will be okay if we continue like this in the future. During the whole season, we have to think of what happened in Barcelona and try not to repeat it. Now, we need to move forward and prepare for another road game against Nancy in France. They are a typical French team, which has athletic players and likes to run and jump on both sides, so we have to be ready to play hard and get the win."

Players

JULIAN, CYRIL
SLUC Nancy
"The game against Panathinaikos will be very tough although we've correctly reacted against Le Havre in the French League. When in Pro A, there are one or two players to stop... there are twelve of them in the Euroleague! It doesn't allow any slack. In the Euroleague, the pressure we have on the shoulders is higher and for players who have never participated in the Euroleague, it is not necessarily easy to manage. Besides, nothing is left to chance and everything is done to destroy the opponent's offensive game. Our challenge will be to find the same fluidity and cohesion we have in the French League against Panathinaikos."
FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Panathinaikos
"What happened in Barcelona last week must stay behind, but we have to learn from that lesson and use it in the next Euroleague games. All these days we have worked really hard in practice, and I am sure that none of us wants to suffer such a big loss in the future again. Panathinaikos is a great club, which knows how to handle such unpleasant situations and this is what we did by beating a Euroleague team, Panionios, on the road. Now we are going to France to continue the winning streak. To make it happen, we have to play hard and never underestimate the opponents despite their heavy recent losses in the Euroleague."
Mike Batiste - PanathinaikosBouncing back from one of its worst Euroleague losses ever, Panathinaikos Athens overcame pesky SLUC Nancy with a 70-80 road victory in Group B on Wednesday. Panathinaikos lifted its record to 2-1, good for what will be a three-way tie for second place. The French champions from Nancy fell to 0-3. Pao's big men dominated inside the entire game, as the Greens grabbed an impressive 19 offensive boards while outrebounding Nancy 29-45 overall. Mike Batiste recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Greens. Dimitrios Diamantidis scored 14 points to go with 9 rebounds, and also shadowed Nancy's go-to-guy, Ricardo Greer, managing to contain him in the second half. Kostas Tsartsaris posted 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Nikola Pekovic came off the bench to add 10 points. Panathinaikos was one step ahead for most of the game, but Nancy kept coming back thanks to heroics from Greer, who finished with 26 points - but only 9 of those after halftime - while guard Steed Tchicamboud added 18. It seemed to be anybody's game at 68-69, but the Greek champs showed their experience by finishing off the game a 2-11 run sparked by Sarunas Jasikevicius and Batiste.

A determined Tchicamboud started the game with 5 points for the Nancy, while Tsartsaris scored twice inside for Panathinaikos. Greer stepped up with a triple, a power layup and a feed to center Cyril Julian to put the hosts ahead 12-9. Panathinaikos adjusted on the defensive end to force Nancy into turnovers and start taking control of the rebounds. The Greens only allowed Nancy just 3 points in a span of 5 minutes to make a huge 3-15 run, mostly on easy layups as Pekovic came off the bench to help Batiste dominate inside. John Cox ended Nancy's scoring drought with a triple at the first quarter's buzzer to cut Pao's lead to 18-24.

Ricardo Greer - SLUC Nancy The swarming Panathinaikos defense continued forcing Nancy turnovers in the second quarter, but the visitors failed to take advantage of the resulting opportunities. After Dusan Kecman of Panathinaikos and Michel Morandais of Nancy exchanged three-pointers, the Greens went inside to Pekovic, who passed to wide-open Antonis Fotsis for a dunk and then downed his own tough layup. Stratos Peperoglou stole another ball from Nancy to fastbreak the Panathinaikos lead to double digits, 24-35, and force home coach Jean-Luc Monschau to ask for a timeout. Nancy responded with free throws by Lamayne Wilson, a jumper by Tchicamboud and a triple from Greer to get within 31-37. Now Panathinaikos boss Zelko Obradovic needed to talk to his team. Tsartsaris left the timeout and hit a corner three, but Greer answered with his fourth from downtown. Nancy missed a couple chances to get closer as the halftime scoreboard showed Panathinaikos ahead 37-45.

Diamantidis kept Panathinaikos rolling after the break with a three-pointer off the dribble and a length-of-the-court pass that Batiste converted for a layup at 39-50. Wilson drove to score a much-needed basket for Nancy and then Jeff Greer copied his brother with a triple. Tchicamboud almost lost the ball on the next possession, but ended up hitting from downtown, too, fueling a Nancy comeback. Even though Pekovic harassed the Nancy frontline into foul trouble, Ricardo Greer found Tchicamboud for another long-range bomb that forged Nancy's first lead since the first quarter, 52-51. A free throw by Pekovic and an easy fastbreak layup by Diamantidis put the guests back ahead before a free throw by Ricardo Greer finished the quarter lowering the difference to 53-54.

Panathinaikos regained control at the start of the final quarter as Drew Nicholas hit a three-pointer, Diamantidis scored in the post and Pekovic added another bucket inside for a 0-7 Pao run to a 53-61 advantage. Greer ran the length of the court for an acrobatic layup, but his and Wilson's missed free throws were ill-timed. The defenses made it almost impossible for either team to score easily as a long exchange of foul shouting ended with Batiste missing 1 of 2, but the Greens rebounding and getting the ball back to him for a layup at 62-69 with less than 5 minutes left on the clock. It was Greer-time then, as the brothers combined for Nancy's next 6 points, with Jeff assisting to Ricardo on the last bucket to cut the deficit to 68-69. But the hosts wouldn't get closer, as a previously quiet Jasikevicius timed his only three-pointer perfectly and then Pao's guards smartly found Batiste under the rim. Jeff Greer missed twice at 70-76 and about a minute to go, and that was it for Nancy, as Batiste drew an unsportsmanlike foul, and Diamantidis hammered the last nail in Nancy's coffin with a long three-pointer.

Head Coaches

MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
SLUC Nancy
"Panathinaikos is a great team, but my team was wonderful, magnificent of courage. We've fought ourselves. Every time they led by 10 points, we came back. Each time, I told my guys that we were going back, that it was possible. And we came back... We even passed them in the third quarter. But the closer we got to the game's end, the more the points were important. We've gave away many points to our opponents and we weren't able to counter their tremendous physical power, which enabled them to take a lot of offensive rebounds. Even if the victory is not present, this game has shown us that we had our chances even against the greatest."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"Before the game we said that the game against Nancy is important. It was the best team so far in offensive rebounds in the Euroleague, it is an athletic team and it needs our attention. In the first half, we did an excellent job in this area. We had situations where we could run, but the problem was that we didn't score. In the last game, we made great shots, but we did not fight. The quarter was very bad for us. In the final moments, we played an aggressive game. It was easy to read the defense of Nancy. It is a proud team, but I too am proud and I am proud of my players. I was happy because we had a better showing than in the game with Barcelona."

Players

GREER, JEFF
SLUC Nancy
"Tonight, it was a complete game, different than against Barcelona. We saw our real team, our true face. We made mistakes in terms of rebounds and we missed shots… Unfortunately, we lost. We are disappointed for our fans, who were wonderful in supporting us up to the end."
PEKOVIC, NIKOLA
Panathinaikos
"It was important game and a difficult game, because it was away. The Nancy is an athletic team and was coming off two defeats. So they had a high incentive to defeat Panathinaikos. We played well in defense in the first half. We generally played well in defense, but we made some offensive mistakes. We missed easy shots and we must work in practice not to repeat them in the next few games."
