THE TAKE

BG Goettingen and Aris BSA 2003 will play each other again after their Week 3 matchup in Group J of the Eurocup Last 16 Wednesday night, in a game that has everything on the line at the Lokhalle Arena. The game will close Week 4 of the Last 16 and has Goettingen (2-1) eyeing first place in the group standings with a win combined with a Budivelnik (2-1) loss at Le Mans (1-2). The hosts have slowed down some since winning their first four regular-season games, but shined last time out with one of the great come-from-behind wins in Eurocup history. Down 18 early in the fourth quarter, the Violets led by Mike Scott reeled off 19 unanswered points to get back in the game and eventually win. Aris (1-2) has gone through a big change since that game with head coach Lefteris Subotic taking over from Sharon Drucker this week. Moreover, top scorer PJ Tucker is a question mark due to injury. Forward Chris Tapoutos instantly takes on a bigger role if Tucker is sidelined. For Goettingen, It’s players like Jason Boone, Scott and Robert Kulawick who really hurt Aris last time. Kulawick, specifically, has been deadly from long range of late, and playmaker Louis Dale will surely look for him on the perimeter in order to repeat his 10-assist performance of Week 3. The guard duo of Trent Meacham and Dwayne Anderson wrap up head coach John Patrick’s rotation. Aris should have a rebounding edge with Dejan Borovnjak inside, though it remains to be seen how the recent release of big man Bryant Dunston affects that category. The visitors might look to slow the game down in order to develop the half-court sets that have enabled them to manufacture high-percentage shots. Guard Nikos Hatzivrettas needs to step it up after a good regular season showing, while Kostas Sloukas will figure to be accounted for by a Goettingen defense that will need to play aggressively and intelligently. Goettingen hopes to capitalize on its home-court advantage, as it has only yielded one game in Eurocup play at the Lokhalle Arena.

Quotes Head Coaches

SUBOTIC, LEFTERIS
Aris BSA 2003
"We travel to Germany to play tomorrow against Goettingen in a difficult and crucial game of our group. I think that we have possibilities to win this match. I watched the first game in Alexandrio and Aris was clearly better than its opponent. But the team made some mistakes in the last quarter and that was the reason that we lost the game. In the last two days we tried to improve some things to avoid repeating the same mistakes in tomorrows game. The defense brings results and victories. So we will give emphasis on this element."

"We lost the first game in our gym and this is an incentive for us to go there tomorrow and win. It's a small final and if we win we will have chances to qualify to the next phase. We must be focused and give everything on the court. We have the capability to win and I think that will happen. Its very important to be focused forty minutes on the court. We must pay attention on our defense. Through the defense we can achieve our goal."
Dwayne Anderson - BG Gottingen - Aris BSA 2003 (Photo Christian Reinhard)BG Goettingen laid down the law early on its homecourt to cruise Wednesday to an easy 74-55 victory over visiting Aris BSA 2003 in Group J of the Last 16. The victory pushed Goettingen's record to 3-1, tied for first place with Budivelnik. Both teams are very close to qualifying for the quarterfinals, while Aris fell to 1-3, alongside Le Mans, in the debut of new head coach Lefteris Subotic. A 13-0 blast-off to start the game established double-digit leads that Goettingen did not give up the rest of the way. Dwayne Anderson led four Goettingen scorers in double digits with 18 points. Louis Dale followed with 16, while Mike Scott and Jason Boone added 14 each. Boone doubled his fun with 11 rebounds. Aris managed to put only one scorer in double digits, Anthony Tucker, with 17 points.

Goettingen roared out of the gate and practically sentenced the game's outcome in the first 5 minutes. Anderson, Scott, Trent Meachum and Boone all scored in a scorching 13-0 run to open the game while Aris racked up 7 misses - including 4 three-point attempts - and 2 turnovers. Tucker finally broke the spell for the guests, but soon Goettingen had new scorers, John Little and Dale, upping the difference to 17-4. Anderson returned to finish what he had started with a layup to give the hosts a high lead of 15 points, 21-6, after 10 minutes. Dale and Anderson combined for a quick 7-0 run early in the second quarter to make it 28-8 before Nikos Hatzivrettas and Kostas Charalampidis got to the free throw line for Aris. Tucker soon joined them, but the best they could lower the difference to was 32-16 before Antoine Jordan, Mike Scott and Dale buried back-to-back-to-back threes to finish the half with Goettingen in total command, 45-20.

A pair of triples by Bobby Brown and Christos Tapoutos and 3 points the hard way by Tucker let Aris cut the gap to 51-31 midway through the third quarter. Dale was ready with a response, 5 points in a row to which Anderson added a layup to quickly establish Goettingen's biggest margin yet, 58-32. Scott bumped it up higher, to 18 points, before the third quarter ended 64-38 for the hosts. Aris went about trying to cut points off in the final quarter, just in case, following Tucker and Tapoutos on a 6-13 run to within 70-51. But by then there were only 3 minutes left, not enough to prevent Goettingen from feeling very good about its chances of advancing from Group J.

Head Coaches

PATRICK, JOHN MICHAEL
BG Goettingen
"I want to congratulate my team on this victory. Aris really has a huge frontcourt with former NBA players. Still, we were able to win the battle for rebounds. Defensively, we played a great game. Also, our intensity was very high. I am proud of my team. We now want to keep playing like this in the upcoming games in the Eurocup and German League."
SUBOTIC, LEFTERIS
Aris BSA 2003
"I think we lost this game from the moment when we missed our first five shots. This caused stress and insecurity and that is why we only scored 20 points in the first half. I don't know all about the team yet. In the second half we tried everything we could. I think Goettingen scored about 15 points in the final two seconds of their respective ball possessions. Despite the loss, I am proud the team kept fighting even with the big point difference."

Players

BOONE, JASON
BG Goettingen
"This was really a big win for us. There wasn’t a single player on our team that didn’t believe a victory was possible, especially after our great comeback in Thessaloniki. We knew we had a chance with our home fans supporting us. When we play confident and play tough basketball we have a chance to beat every team in Europe. Now we want to keep the momentum on our side and take it into the domestic league games as well as into the final two games in the Eurocup Last 16"
CHARALAMPIDIS, KOSTAS
Aris BSA 2003
"We lost this game in the first half. We tried to defend Goettingen well, but at the same time we could not find our offensive rhythm. We did not make the open shots. Congratulations to Goettingen. They played with a lot of heart and energy. For us, this Eurocup season is not over yet. We have a new coach and with his new philosophy we want to play successfully again."
