Unics Kazan will look to move on to the second stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds on Friday when it hosts Dutch champion GasTerra Flames in the return leg of their two-game series. Kazan won 72-84 in Groningen, Netherlands, on Tuesday behind a dominant performance from big man Maciej Lampe. In fact, the centers from both teams were the key players. Lampe led the winners with 26 points, 13 rebounds and a 40 index. The Flames’ Matt Haryasz shined with 25 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, but did not have the supporting cast to keep his team closer. In Kazan, Haryasz will have a tougher time duplicating those numbers as the hosts prepare for him with their deep frontline that boasts Lampe, Vladimir Veremeenko, Slavko Vranes and Hasan Rizvic. GasTerra big man John Turek remains questionable for the game, meaning that 2.01-meter Jason Ellis will be called upon to battle inside with players much bigger. GasTerra shot well from behind the arc in the first game and will need Henry Bekkering, Stephen Ross and Jason Dourisseau to stay sharp to open the floor. Another important piece for the Flames is the playmaking ability of Aron Roije, who dished 7 assists, but missed all four of his field goal attempts. Roije, starting point guard Matt Bauscher and swingman Robby Bostain will have their hands full with Terrell Lyday, Marko Popovic and Petr Samoylenko, while Dourisseau faces a difficult matchup with veteran small forward Kelly McCarty, who ignited the Unics attack in the early going on Tuesday. On paper, Kazan has all the advantages – homecourt, size, experience – however it must be careful not to take GasTerra lightly. Expect to see the hosts come out fighting with nothing to lose and everything to gain. A strong shooting game and inspired performance could set up the type of upset that would go down in history books.
