THE TAKE

Unics Kazan will look to move on to the second stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds on Friday when it hosts Dutch champion GasTerra Flames in the return leg of their two-game series. Kazan won 72-84 in Groningen, Netherlands, on Tuesday behind a dominant performance from big man Maciej Lampe. In fact, the centers from both teams were the key players. Lampe led the winners with 26 points, 13 rebounds and a 40 index. The Flames’ Matt Haryasz shined with 25 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, but did not have the supporting cast to keep his team closer. In Kazan, Haryasz will have a tougher time duplicating those numbers as the hosts prepare for him with their deep frontline that boasts Lampe, Vladimir Veremeenko, Slavko Vranes and Hasan Rizvic. GasTerra big man John Turek remains questionable for the game, meaning that 2.01-meter Jason Ellis will be called upon to battle inside with players much bigger. GasTerra shot well from behind the arc in the first game and will need Henry Bekkering, Stephen Ross and Jason Dourisseau to stay sharp to open the floor. Another important piece for the Flames is the playmaking ability of Aron Roije, who dished 7 assists, but missed all four of his field goal attempts. Roije, starting point guard Matt Bauscher and swingman Robby Bostain will have their hands full with Terrell Lyday, Marko Popovic and Petr Samoylenko, while Dourisseau faces a difficult matchup with veteran small forward Kelly McCarty, who ignited the Unics attack in the early going on Tuesday. On paper, Kazan has all the advantages – homecourt, size, experience – however it must be careful not to take GasTerra lightly. Expect to see the hosts come out fighting with nothing to lose and everything to gain. A strong shooting game and inspired performance could set up the type of upset that would go down in history books.

Marko Popovic - UNICS (photo unics.ru)Unics made it to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague second Qualifying Round by downing Dutch League champion GasTerra Flames 78-63 in Kazan, Russia on Friday night. Unics swept the two-way series and is set to keep battling for a Euroleague regular season spot in the second Qualifying Round next week. Meanwhile, GasTerra has the chance to play the Eurocup for the first time since 2008. Marko Popovic led the winners with 22 points on 6-of-11 three-pointers and 5 assists. Maciej Lampe added 12 points while Zakhar Pashutin and Kelly McCarty each had 11 for Unics. Robby Bostain led GasTerra with 17 points. Jason Dourisseau and Matt Haryasz each had 13 for the guests, that trailed 17-16 after 10 minutes and used a 0-7 run to get within 31-30 at halftime. Haryasz allowed GasTerra to get a 46-47 edge late in the third quarter. Pashutin struck twice from downtown in a 12-0 run that gave Unics the lead for good, 58-47. McCarty took over late in the game to lead Unics to a big home win.

Lampe got Unics going with a jumper and Popovic nailed his first three-pointer for an early 5-2 lead. Both teams struggled to score early but Dorisseau and Matt Bauscher kept GasTerra within 8-6 midway through the first quarter. Popovic struck again from downtown and free throws by Pashutin boosted the hosts' lead to 13-7. Bostain and Turek led a 0-7 run that Jason Ellis capped with a jumper to give GasTerra a 13-14 lead. Popovic stepped up with back-to-back baskets but a put-back layup by Bostain kept GasTerra within 17-16 after 10 minutes. Popovic buried a triple early in the second quarter and even when Bostain copied him in the other end, he insisted from downtown to boost Unics' lead to 23-19. GasTerra struggled to score now and Vladimir Veremeenko soon made it a six-point game, 25-19. Dourisseau stepped up with consecutive baskets but Igor Zamanskiy and Hasan Rizvic allowed Unics to stay way ahead, 31-23. Unics went scoreless in the last two minutes in this quarter. Meanwhile, Ellis and Bostain fueled a 0-7 run that Ross capped with a put-back layup to bring Gasterra as close as 31-30 at halftime.

Bostain scored again immediately after the break but a layup by Rizvic and an easy basket by Pashutin soon restored a 35-32 Unics lead. John Turek scored inside and even when Popovic buried another triple, consecutive baskets by Bostain and Dourisseau tied it at 38-38. Haryasz capped a 0-6 run with a layup and soon added a three-point play to give GasTerra a 40-43 lead. Another basket by Haryasz gave GasTerra its last lead, 46-47, late in the third quarter. A layup by Viktor Zvarykin sparked a 7-0 run that Pashutin capped with a three-pointer to put Unics back ahead, 53-47, after 30 minutes. GasTerra went scoreless for more than 4 minutes and another triple by Pashutin allowed Unics to get its first double-digit lead, 58-47. GasTerra improved its defense and kept finding Haryasz down low. A three-pointer by Bostain gave the guests some hope, 61-54. Haryasz stayed on fire but he didn't find much help around. McCarty had 8 points in one minute to seal the outcome in style , 76-59, as all Unics fans keep hoping to see their team in the 2010-11 Euroleague.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"I would like to congratulate my team, the coaching and administrative staff and our fans, of course, on such a good start to the season. This victory was of great importance for us, and it was pretty hard to gain it since our opponents kept up aggressive offence. I'm pleased to say that we were good on defense and coped with the primary task we set for ourselves, which was not to allow more than 60 points. In the third quarter, there was a certain moment when our opponents could have changed the game's scenario, but for several reasons failed to do that. For our part, we got back in the game soon. I especially want to mention Marko Popovic, who has just played a very good game."
VAN DEN BERG, MARCO
GasTerra Flames
"I would like to congratulate UNICS for the victory. The better team has acquired the deserved victory. The key moment for our team took place in the third quarter. We had been very close to get the initiative into our hands, but did not use the chance. Zvorykin shined with a number of shots, while the team defense as a whole was very safe. This game was good, and it gave us much food for analysis. We will learn good lessons and get experience out of it."

Players

POPOVIC, MARKO
Unics Kazan
"The game turned out to be pretty hard for us. It’s just the beginning of the season, in fact, the first official home game for UNICS. It's quite logica that not everything was perfectly done, though we have pulled ourselves together in the fourth quarter, and celebrated this very important victory in the end."
ROIJE, ARON
GasTerra Flames
"We were prepared to make it such a close game, to feel such pressure, but we lacked experience, and that’s why we lost. Anyway, I do believe that this game will be of great benefit to my team in terms of gaining experience."
