THE TAKE

Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem hosts BK Ventspils on Tuesday in the Israeli capital in the opening leg of the teams' ULEB Cup eighthfinals series. Jerusalem, the 2004 ULEB Cup champion, has been a rather inconsistent side this season, finishing third in Group C with a 5-5 record. The Latvian champions coasted through the regular season with a 7-3 mark, good for second place in Group B. This will be the first ever meeting between these teams. Hapoel boasts a strong frontcourt boosted by the 2006 regular season MVP Mario Austin (17.6 ppg., 9.1 rpg.). Jurica Golemac (10.3 ppg., 3.2 apg.) and Terrence Morris round out a tough trio in the paint. Ventspils counters with Dusan Jelic (12.5 ppg., 6.9 rpg.), Dalron Johnson (10.4 ppg.) and Kaspars Cipruss (11 ppg.). But the battle of the giants inside won't be the only decider in this series. In the backcourt, Hapoel's Ed Cota and Meir Tapiro (12.2 ppg., 3.8 apg.) make up a creative ball-handling tandem, that gets the ball to swingman Timmy Bowers (15.6 ppg.), while gutsy Dror Hagag (7.2 ppg., 2.1 spg.) brings top-notch defense off the bench. Eddie Shannon (15.2 ppg., 5.1 apg.) and Justin Love (10.1 ppg., 48.3% 3FG, 2.9 apg.) lead the Ventspils charge, with Aigars Vitols (10.2 ppg.) firing away from outside and veteran Uvis Helmanis (8.9 ppg.) doing damage from both forward positions. This will be Ventspils' fourth trip to the ULEB Cup elimination rounds, but the team has only reached the quarterfinals once. A strong showing in the away leg could go a long way to changing that. On the other hand, Hapoel has won the competition and reached the semis in its only two trips to the elimination rounds. Look for Hapoel to pound the ball inside to Austin, hoping to build a a sizable lead that will be enough for the second leg. Accordingly, the head to head between Austin and Jelic – and the resulting fouls – could be a deciding factor in this series.

Quotes Head Coaches

SHAMIR, DAN
Hapoel Migdal
"Looking at the last 16 teams you see quality from the highest level of European Basketball. Every game will be a struggle and a fight for every ball. Hapoel Jerusalem got a tough group and it continues with the draw against Ventspils. A team with a lot of quality and speed, been very experienced in the ULEB Cup and it will be hard to get through. We know in the team that it will be hard and we will have to try to get a good result in Jerusalem especially because of the fact that Ventspils hardly lose at home I believe it will be two very good games to watch of high tempo basketball."

Players

Drog Hagag - Hapoel Migdal Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem recorded a big 88-73 win over BK Ventspils on Tuesday night in the Israeli capital to set up an interesting second leg in two weeks in the teams' ULEB Cup eighthfinals series. Mario Austin scored 21 points and Dror Hagag matched a season-high with 16 off the bench to lead Hapoel. The evening was like a cat-and-mouse game, with Hapoel building a number of big leads only to see the Latvian champs stoem back. Jerusalem led 21-13 midway through the first period, but Uvis Helmanis's hot hand gave the visitors a 25-26 lead after 10 minutes. Hagag keyed a 16-3 second period run as the hosts went into the locker rooms at halftime ahead 51-37. Ventspils came out for the second half in form and a series of threes then allowed Justin Love to return the lead to his team. But Hagag scored 7 and dished an assist to Guy Pniny for a three during a 10-0 run to close the third period and Hapoel continued to pull away in the fourth period, extending the lead to 17 points before settling on the big win. Jurica Golemac finished with 16 points and 5 assists and Meir Tapiro scored 11 for Hapoel, but the hero was Hagag. In the 22 minutes the guard played off the bench, Hapoel outscored Ventspils 51-23. Helmanis was perfect from the field on the way to 17 points for Ventspils, which was without starting center Dusan Jelic. Eddie Shannon added 15 points and 8 assists and Justin Love scored 11 in defeat.

Eddie Shannon - VentspilsAustin won the tip and after just 10 seconds completed a three-point play, but Ventspils was quick to reply. Shannon put the visitors first on the board and Helmanis tied the score from behind the arc, 5-5. Austin's power slam was followed by a layup to spark an 8-0 Hapoel run, but Helmanis once again hit a three to stop Hapoel. Terrence Morris came off the bench to replace Austin, who picked up two personal fouls in just 5 minutes. Helmanis's third triple made it a 2-point game, but Tapiro on the other end hit from outside and added the bonus from the line to complete a 4-point play and keep Hapoel on top. Golemac committed his second personal foul and the visitors used the momentum. Down by 8 again, Shannon hit another long-distance jumper and Love scored a layup and the bonus from the line to make it 21-19. After Tapiro missed two open shots, Kaspars Cipruss replied with a bucket and an assist to a three pointer by Aigars Vitols to give Ventspils its first lead of the game, 23-24. Erez Markovic and Dalron Johnson exchanged points before the first 10 minutes finished with Ventspils up by a point. Austin came back to start the second quarter, but Love put Ventspils up 27-30 after an Ed Cota turnover. Once again Austin was there with a three-point play, but Cipruss showed his presence again with good defense on Austin and a layup up on the other end, before he committed his second foul and hit the bench. The pace continued to stay quick, but no team was able to produce a run. Hagag and Pniny came off the bench for Hapoel to add more pressure on the ball on the way to a 39-34 lead midway through the second quarter. When Cipruss committed his third foul, fighting for position on the offensive board, Pniny gave Hapoel its first double-digit lead, 45-35 as the fans went wild. Tapiro and Markovic gave Hapoel its biggest lead of the night, 51-37, at the halftime buzzer.

Golemac started the second half with 5 points in a row to make it a 15-point game, but those were the only points for Hapoel in the first 5 minutes of the half. Ventspils used the pressure on defense to hit two downtown bombs on the other side and make it 56-49. Golemac added two more points, but Shannon and Helmanis scored another two three-pointers and Hapoel's lead was cut to 58-55. A technical foul called on Hapoel's bench allowed Shannon to put Ventspils back on top, 58-59 and complete a 2-18 run. Hagag scored a tough shot to become the first Hapoel player to score in the third quarter that wasn't Golemac, and later on added a big steal which he finished a tough layup and forced Ventspils to take a timeout down 67-62. With less than a minute to go in the period, Hagag wasn't done. He slashed to finish a three-point play, and right away put pressure on the in-bounds pass to steal the ball yet again and add another lay up, to give Hapoel a 72-62 at the end of the third quarter. Love and Shannon tried to save the visitors from long range, but didn't find the net. Timermanis scored the first points for Ventspils in the last quarter after 4 minutes, but until Austin stepped up Hapoel wasn't able to make the run. Hapoel's center scored 7 points in a row to make it 79-64, and from that point on the locals managed to maintain the lead that gives them a very big advantage for the second leg in Latvia.

Head Coaches

SHAMIR, DAN
Hapoel Migdal
"We were up by 14 at halftime, but even before the end of the third quarter they took the lead back. That's exactly the situation now, so we can't think anything is done. We lead by 15 at halftime, and like they came back here, I'm sure they believe in their ability to do that in their home game, where they excel. We did the maximum today, but there are still 40 minutes ahead of us and everything will be decided only there. If I look at the whole game, we fell into their traps for several minutes, and didn't play on our advantages. That's how they came back from minus 15. We left everything we have on court. We'll still need to finish the job in two weeks. Every player on the team has his own job. We can't make any summary now. I respect them a lot. We'll need to be at our best in the second leg to win this series. I believe we have players who can step up in such times, when the season is on the line. We still have many things to fix and improve to become a better team."
MUIZNIEKS,KARLIS
BK Ventspils
"In the beginning of the game we couldn't stop the big guys of Hapoel. During the first half we did a very bad job in the rebounding. In the second half we did better on the boards and the game got tied. We could have had a better finish for this game, with a better result for us but we made too many mistakes. We'll have to do some thinking and see how we can make the needed changes. Everything is possible. This game goes 80 minutes and we have a chance to go to the quarterfinals just as much as Hapoel. We prepared for the game, but we didn't know the pressure in the paint, especially from Austin, will be so big. Jelic didn't play because he got sick."

Players

AUSTIN, MARIO
Hapoel Migdal
"We had two weeks to prepare for this game. We played very well on defense, and that's what got us the win. It wasn't easy. Our defense made the difference. We'll need to keep playing well and win the game over there as well. We still need to work and we'll try to take it one game at a time, and hopefully make it to the final stages."
HAGAG, DROR
Hapoel Migdal
"We did a very good job. We'll need to keep up this intensity. My job is to come on court and bring energies, and that's what I did. We don't think about keeping the 15-point gap for the next game. We just need to come out and play like we should. Ventspils is a great team, especially at home. We must be prepared."
LOVE, JUSTIN
BK Ventspils
"It was a tough game, we fought hard. Of course we're not happy with the final result. Next game we'll play at home, and we have a good chance to qualify to the next round. Hapoel took a big lead, and we came back from that, but eventually they made another run and without taking anything from them, because they played great, I think the main reason it happened was that we didn't stay focused the entire 40 minutes. I hope next game we'll be able to do so."
