THE TAKE

Spirou Basket (2-3) and Artland Dragons (1-4) both hope to finish out their Eurocup competition on a high note as they face off in the Last 16 Group L. Both teams have been eliminated from contention for the Final Eight as Spirou's record is 2-3 and Artland's 1-4. Head coach Drazen Anzulovic's Spirou gave up its last chance to advance by losing 77-56 at Lietuvos Rytas. The Belgian champion was held to just 45% shooting from two-point range and 28% on three-pointers while watching L. Rytas win the rebounding edge 39-28 and force 19 turnovers. Little went right for Anzulovic's team, which also went 11 of 18 (61%) from the free-throw line. No Spirou player scored in double figures with guards Jonathan Tabu and Jerry Johnson leading the way with 8 points. Spirou hopes to snap its three-game losing streak and will face Artland, which it knocked off 82-94 on the road in Week 2. Artland turned the ball over 22 times in that game to offset some hot shooting by both teams. But Artland Dragons will have some extra incentive to finish the Last 16 strong after posting its first win of the campaign, beating iurbentia Bilbao 84-79 at home. Head coach Thorsten Leibenath's German team held Bilbao to just 6 of 30 (20%) from three-point range and used a distinct free throw advantage to secure the victory. Playing without center Darren Fenn, forward Adam Hess scored 17 points while forward Chad Prewitt and center Darius Hall both tallied 13 points and center Dirk Madrich added 15 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. With his team struggling in the German BBL League, Leibenath would love to see his team post a second consecutive victory for some extra confidence.

Quotes Head Coaches

ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Spirou Basket
"In spite of our defeat in Lithuania, I hope my players will understand my message finding motivation against Artland for our last European game this season. I'm globally satisfied by our run even if we missed two crucial games. We had a good reaction this weekend in the Belgian League with more confidence for Wes Wilkinson. Len (Matela) had some personal problems and the team played for him."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Artland Dragons
"We are looking forward to our last Eurocup game this season. Spirou Basket is a strong opponent. It is insignificant that we are not playing anymore to advance. We want to improve as a team and show a good performance against this very good team."

Players

HALL, DARIUS
Artland Dragons
"Spirou Basket is a good team. Although we know that we can't advance anymore we still want to play well in the European competition. Charleroi is a tough place to play, but it will be a fun game to compete with them. I know some of the players. I have played with Sacha Massot on the same team in Belgium and played against Andre Riddick and Len Matela."
Matt Walsh - Spirou BasketSpirou Basket capped a great Eurocup season by treating the fans in Charleroi, Belgium to a farewell 88-79 victory over visiting Artland Dragons on Tuesday. The victory left Spirou with a 3-3 record in Group L, good for third place, while Artland finished last at 1-5. Matt Walsh was the big gun for the winners, with 4-for-5 three-point accuracy among his 25 points. For Artland, Adam hess buried 23 points, Darius Hall a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Lamont McIntosh added 15 points.

The teams traded baskets to start the game until a Drew Neitzel drilled a triple between layups by Hess for a 0-7 run by Artland. When the same duro combined on 6 straight points, the visitors were ahead 10-17. Walsh scored the next 7 to tie for Spirou at 17-17, but Hess and Leo-Niklas Niebuhr restored Artland's lead at 21-23 after 10 minutes. Wes Wilkinson took the scoreboard back for Spirou with a three-point basket-plus-free throw early in the second quarter. Walsh soon had to do it again, with a triple at 29-27 to start a 9-1 run that finished with Matela's layup for a 35-28 Spirou advantage. The hosts' defense kept dominating and Spirou stretched the lead to double digits, 42-31, on a Wilkinson three-pointer on the way to a solid 48-34 halftime advantage.

Spirou was content to trade baskets again after the break, although Walsh's next triple threatened a 20-point difference, 57-39. Hall and Hess soon brought Artland as close as 59-46. Pankracije Barac restored Spirou's offense, but Paul Johnson ended the third quarter with a triple for Artland that left a 65-52 scoreboard after 30 minutes. Head Coaches

ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Spirou Basket
"Without four guys who are important for us, we finished the season like I wanted, with a success after a good second quarter. We can be proud of our run in spite of the elimination. We missed two important games, that's all."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Artland Dragons
"If we take a look on all the second round, I only regret our game in Vilnius, the others were better, like this one in Charleroi tonight, where we lost control in the second quarter. Hess and Hall were very good. I hope Darren Fenn will be ready to play again for us in the German League."
