THE TAKE

A battle to stay alive in the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines second Qualifying Round start on Tuesday, when Alba Berlin hosts Hemofarm Stada in Game 1 of their two-way series in the German capital. Both teams survived their first Qualifying Round series against Chorale Roanne and Hapoel Gilboa/Galil, respectively, on points differential. Above all, Alba's main concern must be stopping Milan Macvan, in great shape recently. He averaged 26 points on 19-of-26 two-pointers in the series against Galil. Macvan offers high basketball IQ, talent and all-around offensive skills to lead an interesting frontcourt that also features center Jerome Jordan, blue-collar big man Ivan Maras and versatile forward Milivoje Bozovic. Bozovic faces a tough matchup against Tadija Dragicevic, a mobile big men with unlimited range and great know-how. Macvan is set for a big battle in the paint against two experienced big men like Patrick Femerling and Sven Schultze. Derrick Allen will try to be the X-factor for Alba due to his post moves and aggressivity. At the same time, Hemofarm must try to stop Alba's scoring ace Julius Jenkins, who comes off a big game against Roanne. He has his perfect complement in All-Eurocup swingman Immanuel McElroy, a top defensive player that never gives up. Lucca Staiger offers deep range and determination off the bench. Jenkins will not have it easy against hard-nosed defender Bojan Krstovic. Meanwhile, McElroy will test his all-around skills against Milos Borisov, a great rebounder with size, ballhandling and great feel for the game. Hollis Price and Marko Marinovic will share the hosts' point guard duties. Price offers more court sense but Marinovic can break any game with his explosiveness and unlimited range. Price is set to see playing time against Mustafa Abdul-Hamid. Meanwhile, Marinovic faces a critical matchup against Miljan Pavkovic, Hemofarm's go-to guy in crunch time. Expect a close battle in which every single possession will count.

Marko Marinovic - Alba Berlin (photo albaberlin.de)In a result that is not as clear as its numbers, Alba Berlin defeated Hemofarm Stada 73-67 at home in the German capital on Tuesday to open their two-game series in the second Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds. The two teams head to Vrsac, Serbia to settle the matter on Friday. Alba will have to shake off some regrets quickly, however. First, it was supposed to play the second game at home, but had to give up that advantage when its homecourt wasn't available for Friday. Second, after leading by 20 on the first shot of the final quarter on Tuesday, Alba went almost 7 minutes without scoring and had to settle for a six-point victory. Marko Marinovic paced Alba with 15 points, his last ones breaking the dangerous fourth-quarter drought. Immanuel McElroy added 12 points, Julius Jenkins 11 and Derrick Allen 10 for Alba. Hemofarm got 16 points from Milan Macvan and 12 from Milos Borisov, then played the defense it needed to get back in the series late in the game.

Hemofarm grabbed a quick 2-7 lead on points split between Macvan and Miljan Pavkovic. Soon, Marinovic tied for Alba on a three-point play and McElroy supplied a 9-7 lead with free throws. Defenses dominated then, and even though Patrick Femerling's layup kept Alba ahead 14-9, Hemofarm rallied behind Macvan. The visitors finally seized a 17-19 lead on baskets by Mustafa Abdul Hamid and Boris Savovic before settling for a 21-21 tie after 10 minutes. Hollis Price buried a triple to open the second quarter, but before long Borisov was tying it up, 26-26 from the same distance. His layup was to make it 30-30, too. Just when it seemed neither team could escape, Alba rattled off a 10-3 run to finish the half with 5 points from Marinovic and take a double-digit 43-33 lead into the halftime lockers.

Alba kept following Marinovic's hot hand to extend its run to 24-7 and its lead, on a layup by Femerling, to 54-37 early in the second half. Alba's defense was the story now, and thhough Savovic and Borisov tried mightily, Hemofarm was at pains to lower the difference to single digits. That's because Allen and Jenkins finished the third quarter by splitting 8 points that held the hosts ahead by 64-48 on the scoreboard. After Bryce Taylor's basket provided a high lead of 20 points, 66-48, to open the final quarter, Hemofarm went to work again. Abdul Hamid sparked a 1-8 run before veteran Bojan Krstic dealt a big blow from long-range, lowering the difference to 67-59. Hemofarm's defense was now in charge, blanking Alba on its own court for almost 7 minutes until Marinovic ended the drought. Meanwhile, Krstovic hit free throws and Bozovic a layup to cut the difference to 69-65 in the next-to-last minute. McElroy helped keep the victory in Alba's hands, but Hemofarm took confidence from the knowledge that the second half of the battle is on its own floor Friday.

Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"I think we played a strong game. If it would be a regular season game, everybody would congratulate us for such a game. However, knowing that we were ahead by double figures throughout most parts of the game and winning only by six in the end, there is no other way than to feel a little bit sour for not playing it to the end the same way. Before this game I asked my players: What is the point difference, that is enough? And our answer was, that no difference is enough. Only the game matters. If we beat the opponent twice, we will go through to the next round. If we want to do that on Friday, we have to upgrade our game on both ends of the floor. I think we will share another strong game on Friday and fight ourselves to the next round."
LUKAJIC, ZELJKO
KK Hemofarm Stada
"We prepared to play against Alba's high-low game and their three- pointers. But they decided to play more inside today. This was a problem for us, because our second big guy, Ivan Maras, got injured before the game and we were short at our position five. We played very bad in the second quarter and we made only two team fouls. Even in the fourth quarter, which was by far our best one, because we played good defense, we did not reach four fouls. Now everything is open, but my players must learn to play with more contact."

Players

FEMERLING, PATRICK
Alba Berlin
"We controlled the game for 30 minutes, but did not react well when they came out more wild in the last quarter and did some unexpected things. But we still have won the game and that was our main goal. Going to Vrsac with only six points of advantage forces us to play a very good second game and win there, too. But I think, with any other result we would have to do that, anyway."
MACVAN, MILAN
KK Hemofarm Stada
"You did not see a very nice game, tonight, because it is such a big competition and both teams were not in the mood to play nice for the audience. Alba did not allow us to go easily to the paint. Only in the fourth quarter did we manage to match Alba's rhythm, which helped us to reach a good result for the next game. With this result I think we now have a good chance to reach the next round."
