THE TAKE

BancaTercas Teramo will aim for a share of the Group A lead when its hosts Alba Berlin in the team’s first game after the winter break. Both teams are coming off losses and know that wins now could help extend their seasons. Berlin will become the first team from the group to seal a Last 16 berth if it wins and it can even clinch first place with a victory and a Galatasaray Café Crown defeat at Azovmash. Teramo fell 90-82 at Azovmash in its last game before the break to see its record slip to 2-2. The bright spots in the loss where the play of Drake Diener, who erupted for 29 points and 10 rebounds for his first Eurocup double-double, and center Virgil Stanescu, who netted a career-high 21 points in just 25 minutes. Berlin lost 93-79 at Galatasaray in Week 4 to fall to 3-1. Despite the loss, head coach Luka Pavicevic could hang his hat on the fact that Berlin boasted six scorers in double figures. Now Berlin is even deeper with the addition of big man Jurica Golemac to the mix. When these teams last met in Week 1, Berlin edged Teramo 75-73 on a Dragan Dojcin layup at the buzzer. Berlin guard Julius Jenkins shined with 18 points to lead his team, while his counterpart Ryan Hoover drilled 5 three-pointers off the bench for Teramo. The matchups in the backcourt could once again be crucial to the outcome. Teramo is led by Diener and point guard Giuseppe Poeta plus Hoover off the bench, while Berlin features Jenkins and Rashard Wright as starters and Steffen Hamann off the bench. At small forward, Berlin’s Immanuel McElroy pits his all-around game against Bobby Jones. In the paint, the Berlin rotation has Blagota Sekulic, Dojcin, Adam Chubb and Golemac to take on Valerio Amoroso, Stanescu and Goran Jurak. Teramo’s rebounding – second in the league at 36 per game – is a key for head coach Andrea Copabianco’s men. But Berlin will be hungry for its second road win as it targets a ticket to the Last 16.

Alba Belrin advanced to the Last 16 and clinched the top spot in Group A after a thrilling 65-66 away win over Banca Tercas Teramo on Tuesday in Group A. Alba improved to 4-1, while Teramo dropped to 2-3 and is tied with Azovmash and Galatasaray heading into the regular season finale. Teramo visits Galatasaray in a must-win Week 6 contest, while Berlin hosts Azovmash. Big man Blagota Sekulic scored the game-winning basket and blocked the last shot attempted by Bobby Jones of Teramo to seal the win. Julius Jenkins led the way for Alba Belrin scoring 17 points, while Jurica Golemac and Sekulic added 11 apiece. Jones was the top scorer on the night with 22 points plus 7 rebounds and 5 steals, while Valerio Amoros bagged 14 and Jesse Young 10 for Teramo.

The game started balanced with the two teams exchanging leads before Virgil Stanescu scored a pair from the line to give the hosts a slim 16-12 cushion. Jenkins from downtown reduced the difference to 18-17. A layup by Young and a long jumper from Amoroso gave to Banca Tercas a 23-17 margin at the end of the first quarter. Jones found two easy points on the break to cap a 10-0 run that bridged the two quarters to make it 28-17 early in the second, but the answer of Alba was another 0-10 run to get back on track and make it 28-27 when Immanuel McElroy nailed a three pointer at the midway point of the quarter. An unstoppable Jones and Young fueled Teramo for a 35-27 lead, before Jenkins tried to take charge for Alba with a pair of penetrations, copied by Derrick Byars from beyond the arc to get within 39-36 at halftime.

McElroy tied the score at 41-41 scoring from beyond the arc early in the third quarter, but Beppe Poeta with his first three of the night gave Teramo a 49-44 advantage, exciting the crowd. Adam Chubb got the visitors within 49-47 answered by Ryan Hoover from beyond the arc to go up 52-47. Then Rashad Wright and Hoover one free throw each to fix the score at 53-48 after 30 minutes. Hoover raised the advantage to 55-48 to begin the last quarter but the guests did not give up and McElroy fueled his side to 55-54. Sekulic put Berlin ahead 55-56. Golemac from the foul line scored a pair to go to 57-60. Amoroso tied the game from three-point land. Jenkins assisted Chubb to get again a 62-64 margin, but again Amoroso completed a three-point-play for a 65-64 advantage for Banca Tercas with just a minute left in the game. Sekulic become the hero of the night, scoring the game-winner and blocking the following attempt of Bobby Jones, before Hoover missed a three-pointer for the win.

Head Coaches

CAPOBIANCO, ANDREA
BancaTercas Teramo
"We played with good concentration, against a very organized team. In both games we were of equal with one of the best European teams, but in both games they were better on the last play. I'm pleased with our approach and our defensive effort, but I'm annoyed because we didn't reap the harvest of our work. In offense, we could have moved the ball round better, but our opponents have an impressive defensive organization. We'll go to Istanbul to pursue promotion, and this mere fact is extremely important for us."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"I want to congratulate my players on the extraordinary victory, and on the promotion to the second round with the first place in this group. We are playing in a very competitive group, and our goal was very difficult. Teramo was an excellent opponent, with a good coach and good players, and they played two high-level games. We wanted to play strong, to stop one-on-one situations, and to not allow them to control the offensive rebounds. This is what we did."
