Timma shines as Baskonia beats Unicaja

Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz bounced back from last week's home loss by downing Unicaja Malaga 88-82 at home on Thursday. Baskonia improved to 5-6 in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague standings, while Unicaja dropped to 3-8. Janis Timma led the winners with 24 points, Toko Shengelia scored 12, Rodrigue Beaubois 11 and Matt Janning had 10 for Baskonia. Adam Waczynski paced Unicaja with 25 points on 7-of-9 shooting from downtown, Nemanja Nedovic scored 13 and Ray McCollum and Jeff Brooks each had 11 for the visitors. Unicaja rallied from a double-digit deficit to get a 41-44 lead early in the second half, but Shengelia, Johannes Voigtmann and an unstoppable Timma – with 8 points in the final five minutes - made the difference down the stretch.

Voigtmann got Baskonia going with a jump hook and Beaubois added back-to-back triples for an 8-0 lead. Dragan Milosavljevic stepped up for Unicaja, but Timma followed a three-pointer with a huge dunk off the baseline and Beaubois insisted from downtown to make it a double-digit game, 16-6. Nemanja Nedovic scored in penetration and consecutive baskets by Milosavljevic brought Unicaja within 18-12. It didn't last long, as Janning, Luca Vildoza and Shengelia fueled a 9-0 run that boosted the hosts' lead to 27-12 after 10 minutes. A jumper by Alberto Diaz sparked a 0-7 run, which Jeff Brooks capped with a fast break layup for a 27-19 Unicaja deficit. Shengelia scored down low and Jayson Granger hit a three-pointer, but Salin and Waczynski kept the visitors within 32-24. Waczynski kept pushing Unicaja with a floater and followed McCallum's corner triple with his own shot from downtown, which prompted a Baskonia call timeout at 36-32. Huertas hit a jumper and Timma added a triple, but McCallum and an alley-oop layup by Nedovic kept Unicaja within 41-36 at halftime.

Nedovic kept pacing Unicaja with a triple, Waczynski added a jumper and fed Carlos Suarez for a three-point play, which gave Unicaja its first lead, 41-44, after a 0-10 run. A red-hot Waczynski struck from downtown, but Vincent Poirier and Granger helped Baskonia tie the game, 49-49. Jones and Janis Timma joined the three-point shootout and a floater by Beaubois fixed the score at 59-56 after 30 minutes. Giorgi Shermadini scored down low early in the fourth quarter and Brooks added a jumper, a layup and a dunk for a 64-64 tie with over six minutes left. Voigtmann dunked twice in a 7-0 run that put Baskonia ahead for good, 71-64. An unstoppable Waczynski struck three times from downtown, but Timma and Janning answered from beyond the arc to keep Baskonia way ahead, 84-76. Waczysnki downed his seventh triple, but Shengelia made sure Baskonia completed a big home win.

"I believe that we had a great start of the game, but we were not able to keep the rhythm. We ended up winning it through a lot of suffering, especially in the second half, in which it was hard for us to be fresh enough to move the ball. In fact, every time we moved the ball well, I would say we got an advantage, but other times we were not able to find those connections. Heart allowed us to win the game, more than tactics. I don't think we played a great game. We have to improve our consistency on defense and share the ball better. I am very happy for the character my team showed; when Unicaja took a 4-point lead, you need to play with the right mentality to avoid being taken out of the game. Like I said before, we need all of our players in a good version... We cannot think that just because we did three things right. We have to try to do four and five things well - that has to be our mentality. I think my players showed very good character; at some point, the game looked difficult because of the way Unicaja was playing. I think they did better than us in the second half, but our heart allowed us to win the game. Tactics can help, but playing with heart and good spirit is almost more important, and we had it. We have to improve some things if we want to be more competitive. It will not be easy because we need to work hard and things that you do well today, you may not do them tomorrow. But playing with heart is always critical."
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"It is obvious that our main wish coming in was to get a win and I think we were relatively close to that. Above our desire to win, which is what we came for, we wanted to compete at a high level. In that sense, in the last two or three weeks, we are noticing that we are improving our mechanisms and are playing better. We still make some mistakes, which lead us to lose games, but we are getting closer, improving. We won two quarters and lost the other two, but the ones we lost, we did it with Baskonia scoring almost 30 points. That limits you a lot, because you have to play the other two quarters really well in order to win. I believe we had a very bad start which allowed them to get a 15-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Even when we rallied and took the lead, we must avoid having so many ups and downs. Even when we improved some things and have others yet to improve, in the end, in the fourth quarter, we had two or three first-line turnovers which allowed them to get fast break points, even when dunks. That stopped us from getting closer than the final 6-point difference. We have to be able to limit this - not just forced shots, previous turnovers or rebounds allowed, but these 2-3 turnovers in the fourth quarter which finally made the difference and made it impossible for us to win the game. Finally, the free throw difference tells us we didn't get our big men involved enough, probably because of their good defense. We didn't have what we needed to finish closer to the rim and draw fouls, getting free throws that would have given us more options down the stretch."

TIMMA, JANIS
Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz
"It was just a team win. I think we did a good job sharing the ball today; we had open shots. That is a really big plus for the team, but defensively, I think we are supposed to get more stops. They got a lot of second chances on offensive rebounds and we are supposed to improve that. [Pedro Martinez] changed the team, basically not allowing us to make a lot of mistakes and stay positive, try to help and play team defense."
WACZYNSKI, ADAM
Unicaja Malaga
"It was a very difficult game. We played really well for three quarters, but started really slow in the beginning. We needed to work hard to get back in the game and in the last minutes, we lost a little bit of tempo, got some turnovers and let them go 7 points up. It was a tough loss, but we will stay together and try our best."
SALIN, SASU
Unicaja Malaga
"It was a tough game, as all the EuroLeague games we have been playing. We have been playing very good, much better, but in the end, we couldn't turn it around and now, we have to focus on the next one and do our best."
