THE TAKE

EiffelTowers Den Bosch has been relegated to spoiler as it hosts Strasbourg in a battle of the bottom two teams in Group I. Head coach Randy Wiel's EiffelTowers lost convincingly at Zadar to fall to 2-6 - two games behind the trio in second place. The Dutch champs hit just 38% from the field while Zadar shot 54% for the game. The only EiffelTowers player to score more than 6 points was power forward Darrell Tucker, who poured in 31 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Otherwise, Wiel clearly wants his players to forget this game. Strasbourg meanwhile is still alive for a spot in the elimination rounds. Head coach Eric Girard's French side nearly knocked off group leader PGE Turow Zgorzelec at home, but fell to 3-5. Strasbourg out-shot Turow 44%-40%, but committed 20 turnovers to 18 for Zgorzelec. Reserve guard Afik Nissim led Strasbourg with 13 points while center Aaron Pettway collected 10 points and 13 rebounds in a losing effort. With a top three spot still up for grabs, look for Girard to have his players focused - just like against EiffelTowers in Week 4, when Strasbourg shot 60%, held Den Bosch to 42% shooting while winning the rebound battle 38-25. Strasbourg would lose all chances of advancing if it loses and both Unics and Zadar win on Tuesday.

EiffelTowers Den Bosch provided its fans with a convincing home win in the 2007-08 ULEB Cup this season by thrashing Strasbourg 83-60 in the Netherlands on Tuesday. Both teams tie for the fifth place in Group I with a 3-6 record, with Hapoel Jerusalem and Unics Kazan just one win away at 4-5. Both teams keep slim chances to become one of the best fourth-ranked teams in the competition. EiffelTowers even has chances to be third in Group I, but it would need to beat Unics in Kazan by more than 40 or 47 points, depending if Strasbourg wins or loses, respectively, as well as seeing Zadar beat Hapoel. Strasbourg has no chance to make it to the top 3 in this group. Kees Akerboom paced the winners with 18 points. Darrell Tucker and Robert Owens each added 14 while Damone Brown and Marcel Aarts had 10 apiece for EiffelTowers. Afik Nissim had 15 points for Strasbourg while Eddie Shannon added 14. EiffelTowers got its first double-digit lead at 18-8 and managed to keep a 26-17 edge after 10 minutes. EiffelTowers boosted its lead to 48-31 at halftime and then ahain to 65-35 late in the third quarter, enough to seal a tough win and due to other results in Group I, stay alive in the competition.

Shannon gave Strasbourg its only lead, 0-2, as EiffelTowers rolled since that moment. A three-point play by Akerboom ignited a 8-0 run highlighted by Tucker's first three-pointer. Aarts dominated inside while Akerboom and Tucker stroke from downtown to make it a double-digit game, 18-8. An outstanding Tucker and free throws by Roye Berkowitz allowed the hosts to keep a safe lead, 26-17, after 10 minutes. Aaron Pettway scored inside while Nissim sank a three-pointer to bring Strasbourg back to life, 31-24, early in the second quarter. A red hot Akerboom buried consecutive triples while Aarts kept shining around the baskets. By the time Brandon Griffin scored in transition, EiffelTowers had broke the game open, 48-31. Shannon beat the buzzer to bring Strasbourg within 48-33 at halftime. The guests needed a quick comeback to keep its elimination round chances alive but it just didn't happen. EiffelTowers dominated at both ends while Jos Frederiks led a 6-0 run that made it a 20-point game, 53-33. Brown had 5 points in a 10-0 run that Owens capped with a three-pointer to break the game open, 65-35, late in the third quarter. Nissim stroke from downtown but he only brought Strasbourg within 67-38 after 30 minutes. Nissim kept pacing the guests with consecutive triples early in the fourth quarter, but it happened to be too little, too late for Strasbourg. Rob Lewin scored to get the guests within 75-51 with 5 minutes to go, as everything was said and done. EiffelTowers pleased its fans with what might be its final home win in the ULEB Cup this season, while Strasbourg left the Netherlands with almost no chance to stay alive in the competition.
