THE TAKE

Fenerbahce Ulker faces another stern test when it hosts AXA FC Barcelona in Group C on Thursday in Istanbul, Spain. Fener is comin goff a tough road loss at Real Madrid, but had won four of five before that and sits alone in fourth place in the group with a 4-4 record. Barcelona pounded Partizan Igokea last week for its fourth consecutive victory and is just one game off the group lead at 6-2. A typically strong night from Barca’s backcourt tandem of Jaka Lakovic and Pepe Sanchez was enough to lead the team to an 82-67 win over the Turkish champs when they last met, despite the best efforts of Willie Solomon. And although both teams feature deep and talented frontlines, there is every reason to expect that the same key guards will play the key roles this time too. Moreover, Fener will be shorthanded as center Semih Erden and sharp shooter Ibrahim Kutluay are sidelined with injuries. Athletic small forward James “Flight” White is expected to play after a twisted ankle caused him to miss a Turkish League contest, but it remains to be seen how that injury will affect him. Solomon has been the barometer of the Fenerbahce squad – the four times that he has scored at least 20 points are the four games that the club has won. He is also averaging 5.5 assists in those wins. Together with Omer Onan and Damir Kaan, head coach Bogdan Tanjevic has an excellent guard rotation, but it will sill be tough against Barca’s remarkable depth, featuring Sanchez, Lakovic, Gianluca Basile and Alex Acker. To make things easier for Solomon, the big men will need to contribute their share of points too. Veteran power forward, who is 12 rebounds away from becoming the first player all decade to amass 1,000 rebounds, brings experience to an otherwise young and talented rotation in the paint, that features Gasper Vidmar, Emir Preldzic, Oguz Savas and newcomer Omer Asik. However they’ll find themselves against the red-hot Mario Kasun, Fran Vazquez, Ersan Ilyasova, Jordi Trias and veteran Denis Marconato. In short, it’s safe to say that lack of depth or options won’t be an issue this week. Ultimately the creative guards and the help they get from others will be the key to the game, with Solomon and Lakovic serving as the big guns. Historically this matchup favors Barcelona, which is 10-2 all-time against Fener, including winning the last six. Fenerbahce hasn't beaten Barcelona since 2000. Barcelona stayed one win behind the Group C leader Panathinaikos, first at 8-1. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce dropped to 4-5 and now ties with Partizan Igokea for the fourth place in this group. Jaka Lakovic led the winners with 22 points. Roger Grimau added 13 points, while Mario Kasun had 12 and Alex Acker 11 for Barcelona. Mirsad Turkcan had 18 points for Fenerbahce and pulled 6 rebounds, half of what he needed to become the first Euroleaguep player to reach 1,000 this decade. James White added 17 points for Fenerbahce. Barcelona enjoyed first-half leads of up to 7-27 before three-pointers by Oguz Savas, Rasim Basak and Hakan Demirel gave Fenerbahce its first lead, 41-40, just before halftime.
