THE TAKE

Maccabi Elite looks to bounce back from a tough road loss when it hosts Cibona Zagreb on Thursday at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel. The Israeli champs have had trouble on the road this season, falling by 23 at Unicaja last week, but have won five straight and 20 of its last 21 home games in the Euroleague. With All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic and swingman Tal Burstein out injured, head coach Oded Kattash has none of the starters from the dynasty that reached three straight Euroleague title games and won back-to-back championships. As a result, players like Marcus Fizer, Will Bynum and Yotam Halperin are being counted on to lead the team. And their work is cut out for them as Maccabi enters the game near the bottom of the league in three-point and free-throw shooting and offensive rebounds. On the other end, Cibona arrives after scoring 100 points for the first time all decade to beat Armani Jeans at home. The Croatian champs have been led by scorer Larry Ayuso and Chris Warren on the wings, while Sam Hoskin is finally healthy to give the team a serious low-post threat. Cibona leads the league in free-throw shooting and is third in three-point shooting, but is last in rebounding and assists. The game features a number of interesting potential head-to-head matchups, with Fizer and Hoskin squaring off at power forward, while Halperin challenges Damir Mulaomerovic, Will Bynum and Vonteego Cummings attack Tre Kelley at guard, and Esteban Batista joins Lior Eliyahu to face Luksa Andric inside. Reserve guard Alex Garcia could get more minutes for Maccabi in an attempt to stop Ayuso. Maccabi has the deeper team, with Terence Morris providing extra defensive cover inside, David Bluthenthal adding three-point shooting and captain Derrick Sharp the leadership. For Cibona, forwards Barisa Krasic, Marin Rozic and Vedran Vukusic, who spent last season in Israel, will need to provide cover off the bench to help the first team remain fresh against Maccabi's depth. The Israeli champs always are the favorite at home, but Cibona has the offensive firepower needed to challenge in Tel Aviv. Look for Ayuso's hand to give the measure of Cibona's chances. Since Maccabi may not have a player who can stop him one-on-one, if the lethal scorer heats up, Cibona could threaten for its first road win this season. But if Maccabi can control Ayuso, it could be a long night for the visitors.

Quotes Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"Cibona Zagreb, just like us, is a team that plays away from home totally different. So far both teams have won their home games and lost on the road, and I hope this will hold for one more week. We need to be ready for them, because they are a very offensive-oriented team with good guards that, on a given day, can do a lot of damage to any team in Europe. We need to play aggressive on both ends of the court, especially on defense. I hope with all my heart that Marcus Fizer will continue his good shape as we saw in the domestic league game on Sunday against Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem."
VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
Cibona
"Maccabi is a great team, with great players. Physically, it's one of the best teams in Europe, with a deep bench and more than five players who are able to decide a game on their own. We know that it's going to be a hard game, especially because of the home advantage for Tel Aviv. We'll keep on playing our game, an we will try to reduce the mistakes we made in the past. But we also have had a lot of positive elements in our game, which we will try to keep and to improve. I think we are on a good path."

Players

FIZER, MARCUS
Maccabi Elite
"Maccabi is a unique team, there's no team like it in Europe, and that's why we've got to keep our home record perfect. I don't care how much I score, as long as we win the games, and that's why I'm here. We don't look at how many points we make. We just want to win the games. If we make it to Madrid with a 1-point win in each game that’s good enough for us."
WARREN, CHRIS
Cibona
"Tel Aviv is one of the toughest places to play. They have a great team with a lot of good players. We had good games in the past, but we can still improve. I think it's a great opportunity to win if we continue to play our game. It's important that we focus on our game and try to keep our rhythm."
Marcus Fizer - Maccabi Elite Maccabi Elite held off a late Cibona Zagreb charge to register an 80-74 victory on Thursday night at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. Maccabi led by 23 late in the third period before Tre Kelley led a furious late charge and Cibona closed the gap to 3 with 36 seconds to go. But Marcus Fizer converted a dunk and a free throw15.6 seconds remaining to ensure Maccabi’s sixth straight home win. The Israeli champs improved to 3-2 and travel to Armani Jeans Milano next week. Cibona fell to 2-3 before hosting Le Mans in Week 6. Maccabi used its defense and held Cibona to 7 second-period points for a 40-29 halftime lead. In the third period, Derrick Sharp and Lior Eliyahu recorded steals and break-away baskets on back-to-back plays to break Cibona’s spirits on the way to a 63-40 advantage. The game looked over before Kelley ignited a late charge, but the visitors ran out of steam and Maccabi secured the win. Eliyahu and Sharp led Maccabi with 12 points apiece and Fizer had 11 for Maccabi. Chris Warren paced Cibona with 19, Keley scored a season-high 16 and Sam Hoskin posted 15 points and 9 rebounds.

Warren scored the first points of the game for Cibona, but Maccabi, playing without a true center in its starting lineup, looked to establish Eliyahu and Marcus Fizer inside, and both produced early baskets. Rookie Omri Casspi stepped up, first drilling a three and then dishing to Eliyahu as Maccabi took control. An Eliyahu steal and layup gave the hosts an 11-5 lead. Warren countered with a three from the corner, but a Vonteego Cummings jumper kept the momentum with the hosts. However the tide turned quickly, with Vedran Vukusic scoring twice as Cibona grabbed a narrow lead. Will Bynum came in and scored off a Cummings steal, but Hoskin matched him. Cummings put the hosts up 4 with a layup and a jumper, but a Warren jumper and Damir Mulaomerovic’s coast-to-coast layup in the final seconds gave the visitors a 21-22 lead after 10 minutes.

Chris Warren - CibonaVukusic started the second period with a basket, but Alex Garcia tied the score with a three. Esteban Batista then went to work with a steal on one end and a bucket in the paint on the other. While Cibona was misfiring time after time, Batista became the focal point of the Maccabi attack, drawing fouls, though his free-throw woes prevented the hosts from padding the lead much. Vukusic finally scored inside to end a four-minute drought, but Garcia answered with a basket-plus-foul for a 32-26 lead. David Bluthenthal came in fresh from the bench and delivered a three. Warren tried to get Cibona going, but another Bluthenthal triple and a short jumper by Sharp extended the hosts lead to 40-29 by halftime.

Maccabi started the second half with a long offense that ended in a Fizer basket. Warren came back with 2 from the line and Marin Rozic drew a foul and made a pair of free throws – the first points scored by a Cibona reserve all evening. Sharp’s jumper kept Maccabi from losing its edge and then Yotam Halperin fed Eliyahu for a two-handed fast-break slam to restore the lead to 13. Larry Ayuso netted a triple only to see a red-hot Sharp match it. The Maccabi captain then recorded a steal and a layup and Eliyahu followed with a steal and a slam seconds later as the lead reached 53-36 to the delight of the crowd. Cibona head coach Josip Vrankovic took a timeout after which Hoskin made a free throw and had the second one taken away for a time violation. Batista increased the Maccabi lead by 2 more and when Halperin drilled a three, the hosts led by 20. Hoskin scored inside only to see Sharp drill a three and Halperin come up with a steal and a layup that made it 63-40. Hoskin continued to fight for Cibona and Kelley’s three-point play helped, but a triple by Garcia kept the hosts firmly in control. Kelley converted a basket-plus-foul in the last seconds to end the third period with Maccabi ahead 68-51.

By the fourth quarter, the Maccabi fans were doing the wave as Batista dug his way into the paint for a basket. Vukusic and Kelley tried to start a desperate rally and Luksa Andric’s slam brought the visitors within 15. Kelley and Rozic then drilled threes and Warren converted Kelley’s missed layup to cut the gap to 74-65, suddenly gaining Maccabi’s full attention. Tel Aviv head coach Oded Kattash took a timeout, but the hosts simply couldn’t find the rim. Warren brought Cibona even closer, but the visitors seemed to run out of steam with about 3:30 left. Maccabi also failed to score, with Fizer missing twice from the line. But Kelley came through with a clutch pull-up triple at the two-minute mark to cut the gap to 74-70. This time Fizer ended the Maccabi drought with 2 free throws and Bluthenthal added another, but Hoskin made a layup and Kelley dropped in an acrobatic layup to get Cibona within 3 with 36 seconds to go. Bynum tried to drain the clock and then Halperin fed Fizer for a slam and a foul with 15.6 seconds remaining that about wrapped it up. Bynum blocked Kelley’s last chance three allowing Maccabi to celebrate the win.

Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"We can look at the first three quarters or at the last one. In the first three quarters we played good. The first half was our best defensive half this season. We eliminated Ayuso and did a very good job. All over the game on offense we played well, even in the minutes we didn't score. I'm very satisfied with the good minutes we had today. We lost our intensity when we were up by 20 on both sides of the floor. Maybe it's because we aren't used to leading by 20, but I hope we will get used to it. Derrick played very good today. He has a lot of experience and executes all the things we work in practice. I can't explain what happened in the last minutes. I want to watch the games a few times before I make up my mind. We allowed them to come back and there was a lot of pressure on us. We can still play much better. Every game we have more good minutes and that's very encouraging for me."
VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
Cibona
"In the last quarter we showed the mentality that we need to have for 40 minutes to win. In the Euroleague you need to play for more than two quarters to win. Tre Kelley only had one practice in the last five days and that’s why he didn’t play more early."

Players

SHARP, DERRICK
Maccabi Elite
"What matters is that we won the game. We got the fans involved in the game with several steals in the third quarter, and we need them, because we are like a big family. We had a big lead and we let go. We thought the game is in our hands and all of a sudden it was a new game."
CASSPI, OMRI
Maccabi Elite
"We played great in the third quarter, but lack of confidence of some players and some turnovers allowed Cibona to come back. I hope we'll learn from that for the future."
MULAOMEROVIC, DAMIR
Cibona
"We didn't play good in the second and third quarter and that's why Maccabi took such a big lead. Tre Kelley was the main reason we were able to come back to the game and almost win it. We made too many turnovers and that's the reason why we lost."
