THE TAKE

Azovmash Mariupol can clinch a spot in the elimination round if it can beat SLUC Nancy by 24 points in the week's top Group D showdown. Coach Rimas Girskis's Azovmash needed overtime but won on the road, handing Khimki its first loss in the group and improving to 4-3 for third place. Azovmash overcame a 44-35 rebounding disadvantage and forcing just 8 Khimki turnovers by shooting 52% from the field and holding Khimki to just 38% for the game. Shooting guard Tomas Delininkaitis poured in 27 points to lead six players in double figures including 12 points and 12 rebounds by shooting guard Rodney Buford. Girskis's Ukrainian team has now won three straight and seems poised to advance, which it will do already if Azovmash can knock off Nancy by 24 points following SLUC's 23-point home win in Week Three. A victory at home would give Mariupol a two-game lead on Nancy with the tie-breaker if Girskis's team can notch the big win. But Azovmash has to improve on the 34% shooting performance in Nancy. Coach Jean-Luc Monsschau's Nancy meanwhile dropped to 3-4 after erasing a 10-point fourth quarter deficit before losing at Pamesa Valencia. The French squad out-rebounded Valencia 34-25 but could not overcome 15 turnovers to Pamesa's 11. Small forward Ricardo Greer scored 25 points and power forward Michael Bauer added 21 as four Nancy starters scored in double figures. But Valencia made 13-of-26 three-pointers (50%) in grabbing the victory. Nancy must now regroup after having lost two straight games. With a spot in the elimination round possibly going to the winner, expect a battle.

Azovmash Mariupol took a giant step towards the elimination round by knocking off SLUC Nancy 76-62 in Group D. Azovmash improved to 5-3 in the group as Tomas Delininkaitis's 20 points paced four players in double figures. Serhiy Lishchuk added 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks while Rodney Buford scored 12 points and Yehor Mesharakou added 10 points and 8 rebounds. Mariupol took control of the game late in the second quarter as it used a 23-8 run to grab a 12-point lead at the break. And Azovmash finished off Nancy by knocking down four three-pointers in the final three minutes in a decisive 12-3 surge to close the contest. Nancy fell to 3-5 in the group despite 17 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals by Ricardo Greer. Cyril Julian collected 10 points and 12 rebounds while Zabian Dowdell chipped in 10 points. Nancy has now lost three straight game and looks to rebound next week at home against Deutsche Bank Skyliners. Azovmash meanwhile will host Pamesa Valencia.

Lishchuk opened the scoring for the hosts and Jeff Greer's three-point play gave Nancy its first lead 4-5. After Ricardo Greer hit his fourth basket of the game, Julian pushed the French squad ahead 10-15. And Azovmash kept it close the rest of the quarter, trailing 16-17 after 10 minutes. Lishchuk's triple started the second but Michael Bauer matched from long range to push Nancy back in front. Dowdell knocked down a trey and Pape Phillippe Amagou and Julian both scored as the guests still led 24-27. But Delininkaitis knocked down four triples and scored 14 points as Mariupol went on a 23-8 run to close the first half ahead 47-35. The second half started with Mesharakou scoring for Azovmash, which Bauer answered with a three-pointer. Lishchuk's basket pushed the lead to 15 points, 53-38. Nancy scored the next six points but Maxym Ivshyn's score re-established a 59-45 lead. Dowdell would hit five straight points to bring the deficit to nine points and Lishchuk's basket made it 61-50 going into the fourth. Ricardo Greer opened the final period with a basket but Delininkaitis drained another long ball which Terence Parker would later match for a 64-57 Azovmash lead. Neither team could score for a couple minutes before Ricardo Greer's bucket made it just a five point game at 74-59. But Buford answered with two three-pointers and Lishchuk and Delininkaitis each hit from downtown as well in a 12-3 run to finish the game.

Head Coaches

ZAVALIN, SERGIY
Azovmash Mariupol
"Today our team gained back its good name, which can really solve serious problems. Everybody did his job 100% today. Zone defense helped us much today and we did well in defense, they couldn't play against our defense."
MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
SLUC Nancy
"Yes, it's our biggest loss of the season. Before we lost by nine at Khimki. In a similar game – we won three quarters in Khimki and we lost in one quarter, this is more or less, what happened today. We'll just try to win the last two games and just see how Azovmash will play their games and we hope they will win."

Players

IVSHYN, MAXYM
Azovmash Mariupol
"It was my first game in the ULEB cup. However, I do not feel myself a newcomer to the team. I started my career in this team and the native walls help. I tried to prove to all and to myself."
BAUER, MICHAEL
SLUC Nancy
"It's a very big game for advancing in the ULEB Cup, and it is very important for us. And we had a very good game in our place, but it was not here. We think, that it is still possible for us to win. We still have a very good point deferential in the ULEB Cup right now."
