THE TAKE

Lottomatica Roma hosts Union Olimpija Ljubljana on Wednesday in a must-win game for the two teams sharing last place in Group B. Roma and Olimpija enter Week 9 with 2-6 records, but the winner could find itself back in the race for a spot in the Top 16, while the loser may be a lame duck until the end of the regular season. Lottomatica dropped its third game in a row last week, 73-63 at Partizan, as the team struggled from the perimeter, making only 2-of-17 three-point attempts (11.7%). The lone bright spot was the play of center Loukas Mavrokefalides, who scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Now the team begins a three-game homestretch, hoping to climb back to the middle of the standings. Olimpija held on for a tough 92-88 overtime win over Cibona last week, keeping the team's hopes of reaching the next round alive. Teemu Rannikko led the way with 18 points and 5 assists as the Slovenian champs snapped a five-game losing streak. Before that game, Olimpija's last win came in Week 2, when it held Roma to 11 fourth-quarter points on the way to an 83-72 win. Both teams have undergone some pretty big changes since then, with Saso Ozbolt, who led Olimpija with 18 points that night, injured and out for the rest of the regular season, while Valdo Ilievski and Jerome Moiso, who both started for Roma, are no longer playing with the team. All signs point to a slow-paced game, as Olimpija (72.5 ppg.) and Roma (69.5 ppg.) are among the lowest-scoring teams in the league. Euroleague legend Dejan Bodiroga (15.3 ppg., 4.9 rpg.) is the go-to guy for Roma, with point guard Mire Chatman (8 ppg.), shooting guard David Hawkins (10 ppg., 3 spg.) and sixth man Alex Righetti (9.5 ppg.) providing firepower from the perimeter. Olimpija captain Marko Milic, the only player to start all eight games for the team, leads his side in scoring (14.3 ppg.) and rebounds (6.9 rpg.). Guards Teemu Rannikko (13 ppg., 3.4 apg.) and Ender Arslan (9.8 ppg.) and swingman Manuchar Markoishvili (10 ppg.)are the team's other prime scorers. A key matchup will see Milic try to contain Bodiroga, however both team will also look to establish a presence in the paint. With Ognjen Askrabic doubtful for Roma, Mavrokefalides (8 ppg., 5.5 rpg.) must step up in his place against Olimpija's Hasan Rizvic, knowing that the rest of the season may rest on this game's outcome.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"This is a crucial game for us. We have to win this game at all costs. We must take advantage of the fact that we are playing at home. The victory against Cantu over the weekend has given the team a boost in confidence, but my players will have to play very focused throughout the game to get a good result. Olimpija is a very good team, it has great talent and in our previous game against them they showed a lot of motivation on the court. We made mistakes in Ljubljana and we were punished."
OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"The atmosphere in the club is good. The players are ready to win again after having won three games in a row between the Euroleague and the Adriatic League. Although our game against Joventut is an old memory, we still have in front of our eyes the last minutes of that game and the loss that has made so complicated our options of reaching the Top 16. We agree that in Roma it is possible to win, and in that way balance out that loss against Joventut. To Italy we travel with just one thought: to achieve the victory that can take us closer to the Top 16. We know that this won't be easy, now that Lottomatica has completed its lineup with Chatman and Mavrokefalidis, and now lays much better than in Week 2 at our Tivoli Arena, while Dejan Bodiroga continues to be the brains and motor of the team."

Players

RIGHETTI, ALEX
Lottomatica Roma
“We haven't won a game on the road this season and this highlights the importance of our next games at home. If we wish to have a chance to progress to the Top 16 we cannot afford a defeat against Olimpija. We need to show more intensity and take control of the game right from the start, because if we let Olimpija play their game, we will be punished. We haven't had the best of starts in the competition, we have played many games on the road and now we must take as many wins as possible in our next home games, starting on Wednesday."
JURKOVIC, IVICA
Union Olimpija
"I agree with our coach. We have all sorts of possibilities of winning at Lottomatica, but of course, only playing a good game, fighting all 40 minutes and being very careful about the shooters on Roma. These three consecutive victories, two in the Adriatic League and one in the Euroleague, have lifted the morale of our team. We are all ready to leave our hearts on the court to achieve another victory."
Luca Garri - Lottomatica Roma Despite playing without its signature star for practically the entire game, Lottomatica stayed in the race to reach the Top 16 from Group B after by downing Union Olimpija 84-74 on Wednesday at home in Rome, Italy. Lottomatica improved to 3-6 and ties with Unicaja for the sixth plave in the Group D standings. Meanwhile, Olimpija dropped to 2-7 and eighth place in the group table. Loukas Mavrokefalidis led the winners with 16 points and 10 rebounds. David Hawkins added 15 points, while Luca Garri posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds of the bench. Daniele Cinciarini had 13 points in just his third Euroleague game while Alex Righetti scored 11 points for Roma, who only used superstar Dejan Bodiroga in the final 2 minutes of the game. Marko Milic led Olimpija with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Teemu Rannikko and Ivica Jurkovic each added 14 points for the guests. Roma led 21-11 after 10 minutes and kept a safe margin all the way, and even when a 3-15 run brought Olimpija within 76-60 with 2 minutes to go, Jacopo Giachetti had 8 points in crunch time to seal the outcome.

Righetti's game-opening layup was followed by a Mavrokefalides basket as Roma went up 4-0, although Denim Lorbek soon nailed a three-pointer to open Olimpija's account. Alessandro Tonolli then earned a trip to the line and made both for Roma, only to see Ender Arslan lay one up as Olimpija closed to within 6-5. That's when Roma made an early move, reeling off 7 straight points that began with Hawkins dorpping a triple and Mavrokefalidis downing a pair of layups to make it 13-5. Jurkovic ended Olimpija's drought with a layup, but Roma soon picked up where it had left off as Mire Chatman scored a basket and Hawkins put back an offensive rebound for a double-digit advantage that held up at 21-11 after 10 minutes.

Ivica Jurkovic - Union OlimpijaSandi Cebular started Olimpija's second quarter with free throws, but the hot hand of Hawkins meant 5 unanswered points added to Roma's lead, making it 26-13. Olimpija struggled to get past Roma's defense, although Saulius Kuzminskas made it to the line for 2 free throws. Arslan's three-pointer cut the deficit further, to 28-18, but Cinciarini stretched the difference again to 30-18 with foul shots. After Arslan was fouled and sank both chances at the line, Roma took a timeout, but only after Kuzminskas shot for 2 points underneath did the hosts resume scoring as Garri buried a triple. Olimpija continued to show signs of life and scored the next 4 points to pull within 33-27, but Roma struck back with 6 consecutive points to re-open the gap. Lorbek added a three-pointer for Olimpija, but Garri dunked and Mavrokefalides dropped a triple to make it 44-30. Mavrokefalides struck again from the arc as the lead reached 16 points before Rannikko's free throws for Olimpia left a 47-33 halftime score.

When Hawkins opened the new half scoring from just inside the arc, the Roma lead was back to 16 points. Milic hit free throws to reduce the deficit and Hawkins left with his fourth foul, but Roma just went inside now to Garri, whose hook shot meant a 53-37 difference midway through the third quarter. Roma's defense kept harrassing Olimpija's shooters, although Arslan was able to get to the line for a pair of free throws and Milic got to the basket on a pass from Lorbek. Neither sparked Olimpija to rally, however, as Mavrokefalides added Roma's next 4 points to make it 57-41, forcing Olimpija to take a timeout. An anti-sporting foul on Tonolli allowed Rannikko to go to the stripe and reduce the deficit to 57-43, but Chatman split his own free throws as Roma escaped the third quarter in charge by 58-43.

Roma retained command in the last quarter, even though Milic started it by scoring off an offensive rebound. Hawkins pierced the visitors’ hopes with a three-pointer good for a 61-45 advantage. With Olimpija unable to make any inroads, Righetti laced a nice pass to Garri who dunked for a 64-48 advantage. After a Milic basket, Cinciarini and Righetti buried back-to-back three-pointers to seeminly end all doubt of the outcome. Mavrokefalides picked up his fifth foul and left to a warm ovation before Cinciarini buried another three to make it 73-56. Olimpija did not give up and pulled to within 73-63 as Arslan fed a cutting Rannikko, who dunked over Garri, but Righetti made a corner triple to calm his team. Bodiroga entered the game with 2 minutes remaining while Jurkovic's three-pointer reduced the deficit to just 6 points, 76-70. Giacchetti made 2 free throws heading into the last minute, and when Milic missed both of his, made another pair to boost the Roma lead to 10 again, 80-70. Giacchetti would add consecutive layups to seal the deal and give Roma some hope for a turnaround going into 2007.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"We showed a lot of character and determination tonight. We managed to win in rebounds and steals. We had five players who fouled out and that forced me to have to play with Dejan Bodiroga, who had been unable to train in the past two days due to injury. For us the important thing was to win. We have given ourselves a chance to go through to the Top 16. It's not going to be easy but we have to work hard over the Christmas break, recover our injured players. I am confident."
OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"We came to Roma hoping to surprise them and get a win that was crucial for us. We prepared the game well but we showed nothing on the court tonight. Everything went wrong for us. I have to congratulate Roma, they controlled the game from start to finish. We knew the importance of this game to try to catch Unicaja for the sixth position in the standings. This was the game were we could come back. It's difficult to say but I think we may have thrown any chances of qualifying for the Top 16."

Players

HAWKINS, DAVID
Lottomatica Roma
"This was a crucial win for us. It was important for us to come out well on defense and run fastbreaks and get as many easy points as we could. I think Luca Garri and Mavrokefalidis did a good job underneath the baskets. They grabbed lots of rebounds for us and that was the key to the game. Every game from now on in the Euroleague is crucial."
ARSLAN, ENDER
Union Olimpija
"We lost control of the game early on. We played with the wrong tempo and Roma took advantage of that. Although we showed more aggressivess in the latter stages of the game, we came across a very experienced Roma side, who never let us comeback. I think we lost because we had a bad start to the game. Now we have to look to the future, we have other games left to play and we will be looking to get as many victories as possible."
