THE TAKE

Dexia Mons hosts PAOK ThessalonĂki on Tuesday night in a must-win-big match for the Belgian Cup holders. Mons (1-6) needs not only to win to remain in contention for a spot in the elimination rounds, but also to beat PAOK (4-3) by at least 15 to make up for an 83-69 loss in Greece last month. Blagota Sekulic had season-highs of 27 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks to lead PAOK that time. PAOK can qualify for the elimination rounds with a win if Kazan also beats EiffelTowers. Mons, losers of three straight, are somewhat of a three-man show. George Evans leads the team with 19.4 points per game on 68.3% two-point shooting, plus a ULEB Cup best 2.9 steals per game. Kevin Houston has made a ridiculous 65.5% of his attempted triples on the way to 18.1 points per game. The two also lead the team in rebounds, Evans with 6.1 per game and Houston with 5.9. Playmaker Shawnta Rogers (16.4 ppg., 5 apg.). is the other key player for Mons. PAOK enjoys a more balanced attack with Jason Parker (11.8 ppg.) and Darius Washington (11.8 ppg., 2.5 spg.) the main men on the perimeter and Drago Pasalic (11.9 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) and Sekulic (11.5 ppg., 6.7 rpg.) patrolling inside. PAOK likes to slow things down, averaging only 70.9 points per game. It is also last in assists with just 11.2 per game. This game could see some great individual efforts from many great players, but the winning team will likely be the one that gets more assistance from the role players. Among the possibilities are rebounder Yemi Nicholson for Mons and Lazaros Agadakos from PAOK.

Ioannis Kalampokis - PAOK PAOK Thessaloniki earned a berth in the ULEB Cup elimination rounds with a thrilling 80-82 away win over Dexia Mons Hainaut on Tuesday in Mons, Belgium. The victory saw PAOK raised its record to 5-3 in Group D, while Mons remained at the bottom of the table with a 1-7 record. The results guarantee that PAOK will finish the regular season in one of the top four spots in the group, all of which will advance to the next stage. Darius Washington led four PAOK scorers in double figures with 18 points, while Blagota Sekulic added 17 points and 6 rebounds, Vlado Scepanovic chipped in 15, Drago Pasalic contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds and the go-to-guy, Ioannis Kalampokis, netted 8. Kevin Houston tallied 17 with 7 boards to lead Dexia Mons-Hainaut, George Evans drained 16 with 5 assists and Shawnta Rogers amassed 14 with 6 assists.

Evans started on fire to boost Mons on a early 4-0 lead, but Sekulic soon tied for PAOK at 6-6. Both teams' shooters started well and were trading baskets with Scepanovic and Pasalic scoring for PAOK and Rogers for the hosts, as his bombs to put Mons in front 16-14 with three minutes left in the first quarter. Five straight points from Houston pushed the hosts further ahead before Evans capped an 8-2 run. In the last minute of the period, Sekulic and Houston exchanged easy points to finish 25-20 for Mons. Kalampois and Jim Potter swapped shots before Scepanovic converted a three-point play to tie the game at 28-28. Back-to-back triples from Dragan Markovic and Rogers excited the crowd and pushed Mons ahead again, 37-30. Jason Parker highlighted a 7-0 PAOK run to tie the score once more, and then Pasalic put PAOK ahead for the first time, 42-43. Yemi Nicholson gave another slim lead to the hosts, but Parker hit the layup to put PAOK up 46-48 at halftime.

George Evans - Dexia MonsBack from the lockers, Mons looked transformed and used a 13-4 run, highlighted by 4 points from Houston and capped by Bingo Merriex's jumper to build a 59-52 cushion. The guests answered by increasing their defensive pressure and finding easy points with Washington and Sekulic making a 7-0 run and once more tying the game at 59-59. Merriex put Mons on top 61-59, but Washington beat the third-quarter buzzer to put again his side ahead 61-62 after 30 mintes. Scepanovic opened the last quarter with an amazing basket from beyond the arc to give PAOK a 61-65 lead, but a 10-0 Mons run, highlighted by Markovic from long distance, changed the lead again, putting the home team ahead 71-65 with six minutes left. Washington scored 5 consecutive points as the visitors climbed within 1. Pasalic then heated up with 5 quick points to put PAOK up 73-75. Houston and Evans twice tied the score for the hosts, but Kalampokis gave a his team an 80-82 cushion with seconds left in the challenge. The hosts called timeout to plan the last shot, but Markovic would miss the potential game-winning triple as PAOK triumphed and celebrated its qualification to the elimination round.

"When I have a look at the stats, I see that we were best in the struggle for the rebounds, and also in the assists, because we count 19 against 8 for PAOK. Nevertheless, we cannot win a game that we deserved to win despite great concentration, and a second half I considered as a big moment of anthology as far as defense is concerned. Congratulations to my guides who did their best to beat a team which makes part of one of the big nations of the basketball world, and I would also like bring to the fore our tactical side which put many problems to PAOK. I also think that the audience saw a very good entertainment, with a game of an exceptional quality, and finally only the success failed."
PILAFIDIS, KONSTANTINOS
PAOK
"As far as the first leg was concerned, I warned my players of the danger, because Mons had already played a good game from time to time. In its arena, our opponent proved it was able to raise the level of its game, especially in the rebounds, and also physically, and all things considered, I had some players which were at the top to make the difference at the right moment. Now, we're qualified, and I hope my team will do its best to finish at the third place, or maybe at the second, to have a good drawing seed in the future."

DESAEVER, MATHIAS

"It's a big disappointment as it's the third time we're beaten at home practically on the buzzer. In fact, the ULEB cup is a heavier calibre than last year, and the level is very high in the way of our opponents are each strong. I think we make good progress by meeting such opponents, and I hope we'll win once again by when we play Real Madrid on January 16 for the last game."
KOJADINOVIC, FELIKS
PAOK
"Our hosts were very strong, and put us a lot of problems with their agressiveness from the beginning of the game until the last seconds. I think we came through alright with a success which opened the way of the second round, but I am not desappointed of not having played, because our group is very large, and the coach has many possibilities to make his choices in comparison with the opponent. Basketball is a sport where a player has to agree to do what the coach wants, and I am very pleased of the issue."
