THE TAKE

As many teams this time of year, Hanzevast Capitals is playing for big-game experience as it hosts BC Hemofarm Stada in Group C. Coach Josep Claros's Hanzevast dropped to 1-7 last week after losing at home to Akasvayu Girona. The Dutch club shot just 42% and allowed Girona to hit 61% of its shots. But Capitals did force 22 Akasvayu turnovers - though it was also out-rebounded 35-25. Shooting guard Kevin Melson poured in 29 points and had 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals. Playmaker Alton Mason collected 17 points, 4 assists and 6 steals, and big man Pavel Englicky chipped in 14 points in a losing effort. Claros's team has gotten plenty of lessons thus far, but it hopes to give its fans one more home victory to celebrate before departing the competition. Hemofarm meanwhile locked up a spot in the next round after beating Asesoft on the road to improve to 6-2 and stay in the running for first place in Group C. Coach Miroslav Nikolic's Hemofarm was out-rebounded 36-21 but shot 54% from the floor while holding Asesoft to just 40% for the game. Nikolic may be concerned about his team making just 13-of-24 free throws (54%) though Asesoft made just 10-of-21 (48%) from the stripe. Hemofarm is looking to repeat its fine showing from Week Four when it shot 66% from the floor and out-rebounded Hanzevast 33-21 though Nikolic's team did commit 16 turnovers and forced only 7 by Hanzevast. Power forward Vladan Vukosavljevic led all scorers with 18 points off the bench while playmaker Miljan Pavkovic and shooting guard Rawle Marshall both had 17 points and reserve shooting guard Nebojsa Joksimovic chipped in 16 points. The loss knocked Hemofarm from first place in Group C and ended the club’s chances of taking a top seed in the ULEB Cup elimination rounds draw. The hosts used a 17-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to take a huge lead, which Hemofarm couldn’t overcome. Alton Mason scored a season-high 19 to pace the winners, while Dwayne Archbold and Rogier Jansen added 16 points apiece, Kevin Melson had 14 and Pavel Englicky posted 12 points and 9 rebounds.
