THE TAKE

Benetton Bwin Treviso and BG Goettingen match up on Wednesday night at the Lokhalle in Germany for the first of their two Eurocup Quarterfinals contests. Goettingen lost its last home game to Budivelnik, making for a 4-2 Last 16 stage in which head coach John Michael Patrick’s side showed it deserved to make it to the Final Eight. The Violets boast a deep roster led by Trent Meacham, an explosive guard capable of taking over games with his scoring and swingman Dwayne Anderson, the team’s offensive leader at 15 points per game, and second-best rebounder at 6.2 boards per game. A balanced side on all areas, Goettingen favors the up-tempo game thanks to a good job sealing the boards by Anderson, Mike Scott and Jason Boone, plus Meacham running the show. Benetton’s main answer for the Violets comes from the Last 16’s best-rated player, swingman Devin Smith, who was that stage’s second-best scorer at over 20 points a game. But, with the Eurocup Finals to be held in Treviso, this quarterfinals matchup has more than just one spicy ingredient. Patrick’s crew knows that if it overloads defensively on Smith, players like Greg Brunner, Massimo Bulleri and Alessandro Gentile can burn them on open shots. And center Donatas Motiejunas has been having a great Eurocup season as well, contributing in the scoring and rebounding columns. Goettingen will need to keep Benetton off the offensive glass in order to run and prevent second-chance points from the likes of long-range marksmen Stefan Markovic, Ryan Toolson and Hrvoje Peric. The late addition of veteran power forward Brian Skinner has given the Italian squad some added muscle in the paint. Michael Meeks is the competition’s elder statesman at 39 years old and could emerge as an X-factor for Goettingen in high-pressure situations, but the hosts will look more to guards Louis Dale and Robert Kulawick to provide some perimeter defense and shooting touch. Benetton’s aggressive defense ranked second in steals in the Last 16 and the visitors hope to offset Goettingen’s high-energy play at both ends in what hints as a frantic head-to-head matchup in the race for to play for the title in Treviso.

Quotes Head Coaches

PATRICK, JOHN MICHAEL
BG Goettingen
"Benetton is a top-level team in Europe. They have the best record in the Eurocup this season, as well as former and future NBA players and experienced ones in international competitions, too. We are the big underdogs in this series, but you never know how it will turn out, especially if we can play they way we like. This game is perhaps the most important one in club history and we need all the support we can get from our fans."

"We need to face this game with serenity, which is very important for us this season. We want to move forward in the Eurocup, with aggressiveness and concentration for the whole 40 minutes, and also for the next 40 in Treviso. We must play calm and have things under control. Concentration is a key factor in a double duel like this. Goettingen is a different team from the ones we faced this year. They are really aggressive. They play full court and with pressure thanks to their short, fast players."
Alessandro Gentile - Benetton Basket BwinBG Goettingen and Benetton Bwin played to a 40-minute draw, 66-66, in an exciting clash on Wednesday in the opening game of their two-game total-points Quarterfinals. The result sets up a winner-takes all second game in Treviso next week, meaning the two teams will play a do-or-die game on the floor that will host the Eurocup Finals for a ticket to the big show. The Violets controlled the game early, led by 14 in the second quarter and 41-32 at halftime. But Alessandro Gentile and Stefan Markovic fueled a 0-11 start to the second half that carried Benetton back. Goettingen rode Mike Scott to remain in the game and came into the final minutes close. Clutch baskets by a previously scoreless Louis Dale tied the game and a Jason Boone block of Gentile in the final seconds kept it that way. Scott finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds to lead the winners. Dwayne Anderson added 13 and Trent Meacham scored 11 for the home team. Gentile finished with a career-high 22 points for Benetton, while Greg Brunner posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Benetton.

The Violets got the perfect start as Meacham spotted John Little for a triple to open the scoring and then after Robert Kulawick missed from downtown, Boone cleaned the glass. Benetton soon got going as Donatas Motiejunas and Devin Smith scored before Gentile gave the visitors their first lead, 5-6. Kulawick responded with a triple, but Motiejunas kept Benetton close. Kulawick nailed another three only to see Gentile and Motiejunas get to the line to make it 15-13. Anderson came in and made an impact, first with 2 free throws and then a slam, which followed a Hrvoje Peric layup for the visitors. Meacham pushed the Goettingen lead to 21-15 after 10 minutes.

Despite a Peric basket to open the second quarter, the Violets continued to control the momentum. Kyle Bailey nailed a three-pointer and then drove for a layup to lift the lead to 9. Smith and Bailey traded scores before Anderson sank a triple to put the hosts ahead by double figures, 31-20. Meacham got involved with a three and Scott scored his first points to cap a 15-5 charge that made it 36-22. Greg Brunner muscled for a score on the offensive glass and Massimo Bulleri nailed a triple to bring Benetton back to life. Michael Meeks hit back from downtown, however Bulleri got to the line for 2 more and Gentile scored a basket-plus-foul. Meacham lifted Goettingen to 41-32 just before halftime.

Gentile took over at the start of the second half with the aid of Markovic as the latter dished twice to the former for triples to silence the Goettingen crowd. Markovic added a steal and layup before Motiejunas scored from the line to put Benetton ahead. Markovic capped a 0-11 run to start the half. Scott scored on the offensive glass to end a five-minute Goettingen drought and tie the score at 43-43, but Gentile and Smith kept Benetton rolling. Scott came through again to keep it close before sinking a clutch triple to put the hosts up 50-49. Peric gave Benetton a slim 50-51 advantage with a layup to end the third quarter.

Brian Skinner and Gentile added to the Benetton lead with free throws in the first minutes of the fourth quarter. Anderson ended a quiet three-and-a-half minutes with a basket for Goettingen and later his 2 free throws made it a 1-point game. Brunner kept Benetton ahead when he tipped in a Smith miss and Motiejunas managed to make it 54-60 from the line. Scott saved the Violets with baskets on back-to-back possessions. Meacham narrowed the gap to 60-61, but Gentile kept Benetton ahead with more free throws. Dale answered with his first basket of the game and Anderson got to the line and put the hosts ahead 64-63 with a minute left. Gentile continued a superb evening with a big three-pointer, which prompted a Goettingen timeout. After setting up a play, Dale got to the line and tied the score. Benetton used a timeout to prepare for a final possession and went to Gentile, but Boone blocked the shot to force a tie game and bring the series down to a one-game winner-take-all duel next week in Treviso.

Head Coaches

PATRICK, JOHN MICHAEL
BG Goettingen
"We saw a game with high intensity on the defensive side. We also played aggressive on offense in the first half, but in the third quarter we were getting too passive. We started with two travelling violations and 4 fouls. The key to the game in my eyes is the fact that we played very good defense on numerous occasions, but we didn’t track down the defensive rebounds. It hurts that we play good defense, but only get 23 defensive rebounds and the opponent gets 20 offensive rebounds. It’s no wonder that they get this large number of free throws, since their centers always got the ball in a very good position. And that’s of course when we have to foul to prevent the easy basket. We have to improve on rebounding, if we want to win the series. I’m proud on my team though. It was a great fight. Benetton is a high-class team. I think we do have a chance. We don’t have a game over the weekend. We can solely prepare for Treviso. We will give everything."
REPESA, JASMIN
Benetton Bwin
"It was a very tough game. Honestly, as tough as we expected. Because the team we play is very tough and aggressive. Goettingen uses a ten-man rotation and keeps the intensity in defense very high. In the first half we had trouble to adjust to this type of play. We usually don’t play against teams with a style of play like Goettingen. The third quarter was an example of how we have to play. We changed the game right there. It’s a pity that we led by 6 points, but weren’t able to win. So the game finished in a tie. But this was only the first half, we have 40 minutes more. We have to adjust more this week for this type of game. I hope we are ready and in front of our fans we can create an atmosphere similar to here in Goettingen to win. I want to give a compliment for the atmosphere I’ve seen here. Winning won’t be easy, they are a good team. I hope now that we know the opponent better, we can adjust more."

Players

BAILEY, KYLE
BG Goettingen
"It was a tough game. We started well and played very hard. I think after the half time we started slow, but we always kept fighting. So in the end it was a draw. So basically it’s a 0-0 going into Game 2."
BRUNNER, GREG
Benetton Bwin
"Their pressure in the first half took us out of the normal way we play. We have to give a lot of credit to them. They have a lot of good athletes. We calmed down a little bit in the second half and started playing our style of basketball. By doing so it gave us the great opportunity to crash the boards and get to the free throw line. For game number two: You always look to win. I think we have to do a couple of things better to beat this team. If you look at the stats, our free throws were atrocious. We rebounded the ball very well, but we didn’t shoot the ball the way we usually do."
