THE TAKE

CSU Asesoft needs to beat BC Hemofarm Stada to keep alive its chances of reaching the elimination round from Group C. Coach Mladan Jojic's Asesoft knocked off Spirou Charleroi before the holidays to improve to 3-4 - two games behind the trio of leaders. Asesoft shot 54% for the game to off-set 16 turnovers as the Romanian team held Charleroi to just 43% from the field. Four starters scored in double figures while center Virgil Carutasu added 12 rebounds and 4 blocks and shooting guard Darius Hargrove scored 18 points off the bench. Jojic's defense was solid throughout, especially in the third quarter when Asesoft gave up just 8 points. CSU will need a similar showing if it wants to knock off Hemofarm, which shot 52% in its Week Three win at home over Asesoft. Jojic will have to find a way to stop Hemofarm's Vladan Vukosavljevic, who collected 28 points and 8 rebounds in Week Three. Hemofarm coach Miroslav Nikolic meanwhile would like his defense to force more than 4 turnovers as it did at home against Asesoft. Nikolic's team notched a big victory before the holiday break, winning at home against Akasvayu Girona to improve to 5-2 in a three-way tie for first place. Hemofarm forced 16 Girona turnovers and shot 58% from the field compared to 51% for Girona. And Nikolic's team did a good job holding off a late comeback charge from Akasvayu as shooting guard Rawle Marshall poured in 29 points and three other starters scored in double figures. Hemofarm can clinch a spot in the elimination round with a victory, so expect Nikolic to have his team ready to roll - also with extra help from new acquisition forward Branko Jorovic.

Vladan Vukosavljevic paced four players with at least 16 points as BC Hemofarm Stada booked its spot in the elimination round with a 72-83 victory at CSU Asesoft in Group C. Vukosavljevic scored 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and led Hemofarm's 13-23 surge over the final eight minutes of the game. Rawle Marshall and Miljan Pavkovic each poured in 17 points while Nebojsa Joksimovic added 16 points. Asesoft dropped to 3-5 despite having four players score in double figures - led by Arvydas Cepulis's 19 points. Virgil Carutasu added 12 points and 18 rebounds while Rashard Griffith had 12 points and 9 rebounds. And Tomas Gaidamavicius chipped in 11 points and 4 steals. Asesoft remained in fourth place in the group and will likely need to look at other groups and hope for the best-fourth standing. Asesoft plays next week at Galatasaray. And Hemofarm travels to Hanzevast Capitals.

Milos Borisov gave the guests the early lead on a three-pointer. But a triple by Cepulis and Reggie Elliott's three-point play spurred a 12-1 Asesoft surge to take a 12-4 lead. Boris Savovic trimmed the margin to 12-9 but Carutasu scored six points in a 12-2 CSU run to push the advantage to 24-11. Joksimovic and Marshall both drained triples to bring Hemofarm to within 26-17 after one period. The Hemofarm surge continued in the second as Rawle scored two baskets and Pavkovic knocked down two from long range in a 0-12 run to begin the period and pull ahead 26-29. The lead switched hands twice but Marshall scored three more times to keep the guests ahead 36-39 at the break. Cepulis opened the scoring in the second half and his long ball gave Asesoft the lead 41-39. Gaidamavicius pushed the advantage to 47-41 before Joksimovic and Pavkovic hit back-to-back treys to even the game and Vukosavljevic gave Hemofarm the lead 47-49. Vukosavljevic converted a three-point play to make it 50-56 and it was 52-58 after three periods. Bojan Obradovic opened the fourth with a basket for Asesoft and Cepulis's long ball and another basket by Obradovic left the hosts down just 59-60. Vukosavljevic then converted a three-point play and Pavkovic nailed a long ball as Hemofarm surged back ahead 59-68. Rashard Griffith scored three baskets but couldn't keep the hosts in the game as Hemofarm went up 65-80. Carutasu hit for Asesoft and Cepulis's trey trimmed the margin to 70-80 with just more than a minute left only to have Vukosavljevic score again to make it 83-70.
