THE TAKE

EiffelTowers Den Bosch looks to remain one game behind the leader in Group I as it hosts struggling Unics Kazan. Coach Randy Wiel's Dutch side dropped to 2-2 by losing at Strasbourg while it shot just 42% from the field and allowed the French to shoot 60% for the game. The starting trio of shooting guard Travis Young, point guard Dean Oliver and power forward Jayson Wells all scored 12 points while power forward Darrell Tucker hit for 20 points off the bench. EiffelTower's offense could not however overcome its woes on the boards as Wiel's troops were out-rebounded 38-25. The Dutch side has plenty to improve upon if it hopes to move to 3-2. And Wiel's team will be facing a Unics Kazan side reeling after dropping its third straight - at home against PGE Turów Zgorzelec to fall to 1-3. Coach Antanas Sireika's Russian team was out-rebounded 35-27 and only forced 10 turnovers. Kazan also shot only 48% from the field and made just 19-of-30 (63%) from the foul line. Power forward Dusko Savanovic scored 16 points and small forward Tariq Kirksay added 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Unics effort. Playmaker Jerry McCullough dished out six assists but his five points were seven below his average coming in. And the other two starters, shooting guard Sergei Chikalkin and center Dmitry Sokolov combined for just seven points. Sireika will need to find some answers and find them quick as a loss would leave Kazan 1-4 and three games behind the Group I leader while three other teams could end up at 3-2.

Tariq Kirksay's double-double and Sergei Chikalkin's 21 points paced Unics Kazan to a comfortable 79-108 victory at EiffelTowers Den Bosch in Group I. Kirksay totaled 26 points and 12 rebounds to go along with 4 assists, 4 steals and 1 blocked shot in helping Kazan improve to 2-3 in the group. Virgil Stanescu added 19 points and Victor Keyru chipped in 16 for the guests, who also received 8 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals from Jerry McCullough. Kazan pulled away right away in the first quarter with a 3-19 run to open a 19-point lead. EiffelTowers tried to come back but dropped to 2-3 despite 14 points each from Greg Stevenson and Darrell Tucker. Den Bosch hosts next week PGE Turów Zgorzelec while Unics remains on the road against Zadar.

McCullough hit the first basket of the game for the guests. And EiffelTowers got on the board with Marcel Aarts' three-point play for a 3-4 game early. Jayson Wells' basket kept the score at 5-8, but Unics did not waste any time pulling away. Chikalkin scored 5 points including a three-pointer while Kirksay and Stanescu each tallied 4 points in a 3-19 spurt for a 8-27 lead. Robert Owens stopped the floodgates with a three-pointer for EiffelTowers, but Kirksay's three-ball made it 11-30 after one period. Tucker's two foul shots and Kees Akerboom's four-point play cut the deficit to 17-30. But the advantage was back up to 19-40 as Dusko Savanovic scored two baskets in a 2-10 run. Den Bosch refused to die that easily and four foul shots by Travis Young on a technical foul against Savanovic helped bring the margin back to 29-40. Three straight baskets by Victor Keyru and the lead was again 29-46. Kazan was ahead 34-46 at the break. Tirksay started the third with two foul shots and scored six points as Unics began the second half on a 4-13 surge to grab a 38-59 advantage. Keyru's three-pointer pushed the lead up to 44-71 and Kazan led comfortably 50-74 going into the fourth period. Kirksay again opened the scoring in the fourth. Wells hit one three-pointer and Dean Oliver knocked down two long balls to pull EiffelTowers to within 65-83 with six minutes left. But Chikalkin and Marko Tusek drained three-balls and Stanescu converted a three-point play in using a 2-13 surge to pull away once and for good.

Head Coaches

WIEL, RANDY
EiffelTowers Den Bosch
"We miss three important players, it's destratrous. We had no answers, everything they tried worked, everything we did went wrong. We missed a bunch of easy shots and you can't do that in a game like this."
SIREIKA, ANTANAS
Unics Kazan
"Today we asked our players for some strength to play different from these last weeks games. Then we were missing team spirit and today we are very happy."
