THE TAKE

A pivotal game in Group E takes place on Wednesday at the Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania, when Lietuvos Rytas hosts Fenerbahce Ulker. After winning regular season Group B. L. Rytas has had trouble in the Top 16 as injuries decimated its frontline leading to a 1-3 start, including a controversial 95-91 overtime loss at Fenerbahce two weeks ago. In that game, Willie Solomon’s thought-to-be game-winning shot for Fener was ruled to be late only after the players were in the locker rooms. Nevertheless, after over 30 minutes of waiting, Fener won the game in overtime. Now L. Rytas must win the return leg at home, and preferably by more than 4 points, if it plans on making a run at the Quarterfinal Playoffs. A Fenerbahce win in Vilnius sends the Turkish Champs through to the next stage and kills L. Rytas’s quarterfinal hopes. Solomon finished with 27 points and 7 assists to lead Fener to victory in their previous meeting. Tarence Kinsey added 16 and Omer Asik came off the bench to play a big role in the paint with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Chuck Eidson paced L. Rytas with 20 points and 8 rebounds and Kenan Bajramovic stepped up for the injured Matt Neilsen and Marijonas Petravicius with 22 points and 9 rebounds, however the club’s other prime big man, Jackson Vroman, fouled out in just 22 minutes, leaving rookie Michailis Anismovas to play more than triple his regular-season average of 7:30 per game. The big man situation figures to be at the center of this game as well, with Vroman – who averages a foul every five-and-a-half minutes – Bajramovic and Anismovas matching up with Asik, Oguz Savas, Semih Erden and Gasper Vidmar – all standing at least 2.10 meters tall. In the backcourt, L. Rytas will send Hollis Price and backcup Jared Jordan to battle Solomon, while Arturas Jomantas, Mindaugas Lukauskis and Eidson face Damir Mrsic Kaan, Omer Onan and Kinsey. Price’s shooting and scoring have been slightly up and his turnovers down at home, all reasons for L. Rytas optimism. The game could be a turning point in both teams’ seasons and figures to be an intense encounter, where no one will be surprised if it goes to the buzzer again. With a 7-2 home-court record this season, L. Rytas is always the favorite in front of its fans, however Fener’s four road wins prove that Solomon and co. can never be taken lightly, certainly not at this point in the season.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"One can think that this game is the most important this season, but I could say we had like six really important games, just like this one. For sure, everybody knows it's a big pot on the table. We know this game is very huge. However, we missed two good chances on the road. We could have taken a break in the standings because I think we deserved at least one win away from home. Anyway, I think that we still got stronger because obviously we needed time to adjust our matchups due to our weaker inside lineup. Nielsen and Petravicius are still missing so we have to make our big guys work a little better. We're playing a home game and surely are focused for a win. Of course, we expect a lot from our great fans. The gym is going to be full and I'm sure our fans will do what they do best all the time."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This is the game. And it is more than a great game. We have to work for this game like we never have before. We have to try to find a victory that means a lot for our qualification to the quarterfinals. Now our team is trying to concentrate on this big game. Our condition is good enough to handle both the stress and the physical challenge. Physically we have the energy to fight. For sure, Lietivos Rytas will attack and we have to stop them. We will see what we can do. In this moment, our chances are fifty-fifty."

"Every game in the Euroleague is important, but this one is special because of our and their situation in the group. We want to win this game because it's always our goal to win. We lost down there by 4 points so we want to try to win by more. But, you know, it would be nice to win the game first. This game is also special because of our totally strange and funny encounter back in Turkey. Looking back there, Solomon really hit a nice shot, it's just that it was too late. Obviously, they still found a way to win the game. Now, we want to take it back. Solomon is a great shooter, a great scorer. He's a problem for a lot of players and a lot of teams. But it's not a one-on-one game. I think we're going to do a great job defensively together because basketball is a team sport."
KINSEY, TARENCE
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It’s another tough game on the road waiting for us. We are getting ready for this game and we have the ability to play it the way it should be. They will try to use the home-court advantage, but we know how to handle that kind of pressure. We proved that we can play as good as we did in our home games on the road, too. So the most important thing for us is to focus on winning the game, nothing else. We know that it’s hard work, but these games are for great teams and we have to show who we are in this game, too."
Hollis Price - Lietuvos Rytas Lietuvos Rytas remained alive in the chase for a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs with a dramatic come-from-behind 87-84 victory over Fenerbahce Ulker on Wednesday night at the Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. Mindaugas Lukauskis was the hero with a clutch three-pointer with a minute remaining that put his team up 5 and then an offensive rebound with 10 seconds remaining that allowed L. Rytas to kill the clock and deny Fenerbahce a chance to send the game to overtime. L. Rytas improved to 2-3 in Group E, the same record as Fenerbahce. But because L. Rytas was unable to erase the margin-of-victory from the Turkish champs’ 95-91 victory in Istanbul two weeks ago, Fenerbahce holds the potential tiebreaker in its hands. The visitors were in control for most of the night, holding double-digit leads in the second and third quarter. Even after the hosts took a brief lead late in the third quarter, Tarence Kinsey and Willie Solomon led a Fenerbahce charge and the visitors went up 9 early in the fourth quarter. But Hollis Price pushed his team all the time and with a passionate crowd behind them, L. Rytas chipped away at the lead as the game came down to the final minute, where the hosts were able to snatch the win. Price drilled 5 three-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points, Chuck Eidson added 16, Kenan Bajramovic 15, Jackson Vroman 12 and Arturas Jomantas scored 10. Kinsey paced Fenerbahce with 20 points and Solomon finished with 18 points and 6 assists.

The hosts won the opening tip, but Fenerbahce got on the scoreboard first through Oguz Savas. The visitors’ aggressive interior defense denied L. Rytas twice before Eidson cut through for a basket-plus-foul. Both teams missed a few free throws in the early going. Bajramovic kept the hosts on top before Omer Onan knotted the score at 7-7. Then the big men began trading baskets, with Vroman’s dunk matched by a Gasper Vidmar layup. Rasim Basak drilled a triple – his first of the Top 16 – and followed it with a long jumper as Fener took an 11-14 lead. Vroman made a free throw, but despite the hosts’ showing full-court pressure, Solomon beat the L. Rytas defense downcourt for an easy basket. The lead grew even more on another Onan triple, but this time Eidson answered with a long jumper. Vidmar barreled over Bajramovic for his third foul and found himself on the Fenerbahce bench, but while L. Rytas’s guards missed open jumpers, the visitors continued to roll. Solomon recorded a steal that led to a three-pointer and Semih Erden corrected an Onan miss with a slam as Fenerbahce finished the first period ahead 18-26.

Tarence Kinsey - Fenerbahce UlkerPrice opened the second period with a triple, but Basak matched him from downtown. Threes continued to rain down as Jomantas scored from the win for the home team, James White hit for Fener and then Eidson answered. Then Omer Asik scored three the hard way to put his team up 29-35. Missed free throws continued to plague both teams, and it seemed to rub off on their other shots too. A Kinsey triple ended a nearly three-minute stretch without a field goal for both teams and gave Fenerbahce its first double-digit advantage. L. Rytas used a timeout to talk things over, but head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic had no solution for his team’s poor shooting. The pace suddenly changed in the last two minutes of the half, with Price and Martynas Gecevicius making threes for the hosts and White and Kinsey doing the same for the visitors. White kept his team up by 10 with free throws, but Price scored in transition to make it 38-46 at halftime.

Onan got Fenerbahce going after the break with a three-pointer. Bajramovic sank 2 free throws for L. Rytas’s first points of the half, but an emphatic Erden slam kept the visitors in control. Jomantas attacked the lane for a basket-plus-foul that revved up the crowd and Bajramovic added a triple that brought the hosts within 3. Vroman committed his fourth foul and needed to sit, but his replacement, Michalis Ansimovas, scored on the offensive glass to cap a 10-0 run that made it 50-51. Kinsey saved Fener with a long jumper and Solomon soon added a pull-up jumper. Bajramovic stepped up for L. Rytas, scoring and then dishing to Eidson for a three that tied the game at 55-55. Kinsey came through with a steal and slam, but Jomantas tied it from the line and then Eidson’s reverse layup gave L. Rytas its first lead since early in the first quarter. However Fener fought back as Asik converted an alley-oop and Kinsey and Solomon drilled three-pointers for a 0-8 run that made it 59-65. In between those triples, Asik rejected a Bajramovic attempt that gave him the all-time Top 16 record for blocked shots with 18. A timeout re-energized the hosts as Eidson scored and was fouled, but Solomon answered with baskets on the next two plays – including a triple – to make it 63-70 at the end of the third period.

Kenan Bajramovic - Lietuvos RytasKinsey was fouled shooting a three and though he only made 2 of the resulting 3 free throws, Fener’s lead continued to grow. Price cut the gap to 6 with a triple and then Bajramovic revived the fans with free throws, however Solomon was cool from the line for the visitors. Erden silenced the crowd with a nifty move inside only to see Vroman stand tall with back-to-back baskets to bring his team within 72-76. Solomon found an open Emir Preldzic for a triple, but Price bombed right back. Then Jomantas scored on the offensive glass and after Solomon lost the ball, Price fired in his fifth three to put L. Rytas up 80-79 with just over three minutes to go. The drama continued to grow. Onan missed twice from the line, but Solomon stole the ball and cut to the basket. However Jomantas came from behind to block the shot and instead Lukauskis drew Preldzic’s fifth foul. Lukauskis made the free throws, but he was matched by Kinsey. Then Price went to the line and made 1 and Solomon did the same. Vroman fouled out with two minutes to go and his team ahead 83-82. Price again made only 1 from the line, but Solomon fumbled the ball out of bounds. After a timeout, Lukauskis blew up the arena with a triple that made it 87-82 with a minute remaining. Kinsey immediately answered with a triple of his own and after a successful Fenerbahce defensive stand, Solomon was called for a controversial offensive foul. L. Rytas took the ball back with 12 seconds separating the shot clock from the game clock. Price wound the clock down, and dished to Eidson, who was blocked by Asik. Price got the ball back and missed a short jumper, but Lukauskis saved the rebound and passed it out, allowing the clock to expire as L. Rytas remained alive.

Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"We are still making this group tough. On the one hand, I'm glad because the race is still open. On the other, I'm not, because we needed 2 points more so much. We had a bad first half. We missed a lot of open shots. We played terrible offense against the zone. Plus, our defense was not perfect. We let them run the game with a lot of guys inside, they immediately felt confident and started shooting wild. After the break, we played a little better, but we still could have done better. A couple of times, we turned the ball over pretty stupidly and couldn't get ahead. Overall, I'm happy we didn't surrender. It's not in our hands now, but I hope we get to the quarterfinals because we deserved it. Also, I'm really grateful to our fans who stayed with us until the very end."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"First of all, congratulations to our opponents. It was a very tough game of basketball. Both teams played with a hug desire to win in a race for qualifications. Lietuvos Rytas played without Nielsen and Petravicius and they were very good. Their game is of great quality in the Top 16 without these two guys. I also congratulate Lithuanian basketball, because here you have a great basketball school. We're a young team and these youngsters will improve even more next year. I hope we win the next game against Tau Ceramica and advance to the quarterfinals."

"We couldn't make everything go as well as we wanted. But hopefully we can take care of business in Greece next week and Tau Ceramica will take care of business in Turkey. We need some help from Tau, but, most importantly, we have to win first. Gosh, my free throws tonight were unbelievable. It's probably the first time in my career when I shot so poorly from the line. If we don't advance to the quarterfinals, I can take blame for missing those shots. It's not my character to miss so many free throws. That's not something I do. Yeah, Fenerbahce shot amazingly well from outside in the first half, but I think it wasn't just luck. They have great shooters, plus, we could have done a better job defensively. Anyway, they made some good shots."
JOMANTAS, ARTURAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"It's hard to say if it was the hardest game this season, but it definitely was one of the hard ones. We were a bit under pressure before this game, because we knew we had to win by a 5-point margin. Our future depended on this game. But they shot so well from behind the arc, something like 60 percent. We couldn't shoot that well, especially from the line. Thus they had built a lead."
