THE TAKE

A direct fight to stay in the fight for a Quarterfinals spot in Group I is taking place in France, where Le Mans hosts DKV Joventut on Tuesday at 21:30 CET. Both teams are tied for second place in Group I, each with a 1-1 record. DKV Joventut faces injury problems, as Clay Tucker was a last-minute decision in a Spanish League game against Regal FC Barcelona and may see reduced playing time against Le Mans. If Tucker stays sidelined or plays less than expected, Uros Tripkovic will be his team's main threat from beyond the arc. Up-and-coming small forward Pere Tomas and athletic swingman Christian Eyenga will also see extended playing time at both wings. Tripkovic is ready to test his scoring skills against Dee Spencer, in what could be a critical matchup in this game. Meanwhile, Tomas has to use his quickness and intensity against three-point threat Maleye Ndoye. Joventut will have to be concerned on stopping do-it-all point guard Zach Wright, in great shape recently. Antoine Diot offers court sense and determination - he hit the game-winner against Aris last week - off the bench, but both players are ready to share minutes on court, too. Wright has a very interesting battle against a good defender like Mario Fernandez. Meanwhile, Diot faces a smart, pass-first playmaker like Kris Valters, that leads the 2009-10 Eurocup in assists. Joventut is deeper around the baskets, as it features experienced Eurocup players like two-time winner Edu Hernandez-Sonseca or Antonio Bueno. It can open the court with Luka Bogdanovic at power forward or add intensity and physical skills with Henk Norel and Alain Koffi on the floor. Bogdanovic and Norel have the tough mission to guard former Alphonso Ford trophy winner Marc Salyers, a mismatch due to his ballhandling and unlimited range. Meanwhile, Hernandez-Sonseca, Bueno and Koffi are ready to take JP Batista into foul trouble, as well as trying to outrebound him and Thierry Rupert. Joventut must try to get its big men involved and expect Fernandez and Valters to stop Wright. Le Mans must run its offense through Spencer, Salyers and Batista and trust on their wild fan base to generate an outstanding basketball atmosphere. Expect a big showdown in Le Mans this Tuesday, in what could be a pivotal game in this group.

JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"We are very happy to have beaten Aris on the road and stay in the race to qualify. This is an important game for both teams as we are currently tied for second place in this group. Joventut has a very deep team and will certainly have a lot of resources. We will have to keep them from finding their rhythm and control the game tempo. Finally, it Will be a real pleasure to welcome back Alain Koffi, Luka Bogdanovic and Clay Tucke, as they all played for Le Mans in recent years."

"This is a crucial game for us, as we will play twice on the road after this one. We saw that each game in this group was won by a very small margin. Every game is tough and we have to win at home to keep a real chance to go deep in this competition. Joventut has a great team, very balanced at each position, but we must play better than them in front of out fans tomorrow."
Edu Hernandez-Sonseca - DKV Joventut (photo David Piolé - Msb.fr)DKV Joventut registered its first road win in Last 16 Group I by edging Le Mans Sarthe Basket 62-70 in France on Tuesday. Le Mans managed to get within 62-66 but Bogdanovic and Valters sealed the outcome from the foul line.

Maleye Ndoye got Le Mans going with a close jumper, as Joventut struggled to score in the opening 2 minutes. Antonio Bueno stepped up with a jump hook that Wright matched with a driving layup. Tucker and Spencer traded jumpers and a coast-to-coast basket by David Jelinek gave Joventut its first lead, 6-7. A foul shot by Charles Kahudi and a triple by Spencer put the hosts back ahead, 10-7. Josep Franch took over with a driving layup that Spencer matched with foul shots. Batista scored down low and soon scored over Hernandez-Sonseca to give Le Mans a 16-11 edge after 10 minutes. Hernandez-Sonseca shined with a power layup early in the second quarter but Ndoye matched it with free throws. Christian Eyenga silenced the crowd with a high-flying put-back dunk and soon added foul throws for a 19-17 Joventut deficit. Thierry Rupert and Wright rescued Le Mans with consecutive layups but an easy basket by Bogdanovic and a dunk by Alain Koffi kept the guests within 25-21. Wright dunked it off a Le Mans timeout but Tucker struck from downtown and added a mid-range jumper to bring Joventut within 28-26. Marc Salyers downed a triple but a put-back layup by Tomas and Valters joined the three-point shootout for a 32-31 score. Spencer beat the buzzer with a six-meter jumper to set the crowd on fire, 34-31, at halftime.

Dewarick Spencer - Le Mans (photo David Piolé - Msb.fr)Joventut tried its trademark 3-2 zone defense with Koffi on the top the key immediately after the break. Meanwhile, Valters followed a jumper with a three-pointer to put the guests back ahead, 34-36. Batista stepped up with a jumper, igniting a 7-0 run highlighted by Spencer's triple for a 41-36 Le Mans lead. Hernandez-Sonseca downed a three-pointer and soon added a layup to bring Joventut as close as 43-41. Le Mans improved its defense while Rupert and Spencer made it a six-point game, 50-44. Bogdanovic tried to change things for the guests but free throws by Diot and Rupert gave Le Mans a 53-48 edge after 10 minutes. Le Mans tried a zone defense early in the fourth quarter but Bogdanovic and Tomas punished it with consecutive triples for a 53-55 Joventut edge. Tucker provided a highlight with a nine-meter triple and Bogdanovic struck again from downtown to break the game open, 53-61, after a 0-13 run. Rupert and Tomas traded jumpers and a layup-plus-foul by Hernandez-Sonseca sealed the outcome, 55-66, with 4 minutes left. Free throws by Guillaume Yango and a triple by Diot gave Le Mans some hope, 60-66. Free throws by Spencer capped a 7-0 run but it was too little, too late for the hosts. Free throws by Bogdanovic and Valters allowed Joventut to seal an important road win.

Head Coaches

JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"We had the game under control until the start of the fourth quarter. It took us some time to organize our defense and Badalona circulated the ball really well to find open shots. Once they had found their rhythm, we had trouble stopping their excellent shooters until it was too late to do it. We fought back but it was too late. We must try to win another game on the road to keep our chances alive."
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"We had to work hard to get this win. Fortunately, we improved our defense in the second half and found open shots that went in. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca worked hard on defense and we have to be happy overall with this win. Our young players like Josep Franch, David Jelinek, Pere Tomas and Christian Eyenga gave us some good moments tonight. With their hard work and a bit of patience, we will be able to have six or seven players from our youth teams, that is our goal and we are trying to do it, but it is complicated. Franch is earning playing time by practicing hard. Valters hit some important shots tonight and Mario Fernandez managed to organize our offense when he played. We took a lot of open shots tonight. Hernandez-Sonseca managed to find good options inside but they tried to double-team him and left our shooters open. The debate is out there about us taking too many three-point shots but not taking open shots will make us lose. We have to work hard to get back to our usual playing level. Confidence was the key to this game. We managed to play good defense for four or five consecutive plays and with that confidence we managed to play better and put Dee Spencer into foul trouble."
HERNANDEZ-SONSECA, EDU
DKV Joventut
"This is a very important win because it is always important to do it on the road, especially as it helped us to finish out losing streak. It is very important for our confidence, because we were working hard. We needed a bit of luck and we had it tonight, and it was enough to beat Le Mans. We felt more confident on the court, as we had been waiting for some time to play the way we did tonight. This is good for the team, of course, everything looks brighter now. We managed to play well and have to be happy about it, but we must forget about this win tonight and focus on our next games."
