THE TAKE

Armani Jeans Milano seeks its first win this season when it hosts Unicaja on Thursday in Group B. Milano opened the season with a home loss to Lietuvos Rytas and then fell at Efes Pilsen last week. The team is still coming together since head coach Caja Attilio took over just days before the season-opener. The team has found a quartet of players to lead the squad, with Massimo Bulleri and Reece Gaines leading the charge from the perimeter and Ansu Sesay and rebounding ace Travis Watson getting the job done upfront. However the various role players have not stepped up yet. Armani Jeans is near or at the bottom of the league in scoring (73 points per game), offensive rebounds (4.5 per game) and assists (7 per game). Meanwhile Unicaja recorded its highest-scoring and biggest win ever in the Euroleague last week by crushing Cibona 102-64. Davor Kus continued his red-hot start to the season and Daniel Santiago and Boniface N'Dong have been solid inside for head coach Sergio Scariolo. This week that duo will need to carry a bit more weight as star power forward Marcus Haislip is doubtful with an eye injury. His absence could be a blessing for the hosts, who are short on experienced big men. Nonetheless, Casey Shaw and Sesay will need to help Watson bang inside, though Sesay's perimeter shooting could help create space on the offensive end. Cheyne Gadson will join Bulleri and Gaines in the backcourt as it looks to match up with Kus, Bojan Popovic and Carlos Cabezas. Unicaja's versatile lineup sees Berni Rodriguez, Carlos Jimenez and Jiri Welsch all play at different times, which creates some interesting possibilities against the likes of Dusan Vukcevic and teenage sensation Danilo Gallinari, who is expected to play for the first time this season. This game could be a turning point in the Armani Jeans season. Another loss – and its second at home – would put Attilio's club in a difficult hole to climb out of if it hopes to reach the Top 16. On the other hand, a road win for Unicaja is just the type of thing the club needs to mount a challenge for group leadership. How much of an impact Hailsip's absence and Gallinari's appearance will have on the game remains to be seen. Either way, this game has the makings of a close one, which could come down to the final buzzer.

Quotes Head Coaches

CAJA, ATTILIO
AJ Milano
"We continue our road in the Euroleague by facing one of the best teams of last season, Unicaja Malaga, which finished third at the last Final Four in Athens. We have to make our best effort, trying to improve our basketball and also get the win. We are in a bad situation, but we have to take the good things that we showed last week in Istanbul and try to be more consistent during 40 minutes. Malaga has a strong and experienced group with players like Cabezas, Berni Rodriguez and Carlos Jimenez, and we have to limit their impact. We have to be careful in the paint also, where Daniel Santiago could be very dangerous on offense."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We have a difficult road game following the unpredictable week that we just experienced. We went from playing one of the best games that I remember being played by this team in the Euroleague to a playing a very disappointing one at home in the Spanish League, where we have seen again that we, like most teams, cannot forget about intensity on defense and still think of getting good results. With that in mind, we travel knowing that every Euroleague game is played against a talented opponent, and that is also the case with Milano despite the difficulties they have encountered at the start of the season. A road win is always a great result and now would be even moreso considering the irregular period we are going through."

Players

GALLINARI, DANILO
AJ Milano
"This is obviously a very tough game against one of the greatest European teams, Unicaja Malaga, which can rely on strong and talented players. We want to win this game and continue to hope for a Top 16 qualification, even after the losses against Lietuvos Rytas and Efes Efes. I'm not worried about my debut in the Euroleague, and that's not really a first game for me as I played some minutes in this competition two seasons ago. We just want to win because now all the games will be decisive."
WELSCH, JIRI
Unicaja
"I believe that we have the capacity to do things a lot better. Now, the question is which Unicaja will come to play: whether we'll play tough and concetrated, like we know how to do, or if we play like we did in our last domestic game. It's not a question of playing in one competition or another: we have to perform game to game. Now is the time to be together and play like a team. I don't know much about Milano, but it's a Euroleague team, and that by itself makes them important. It's a road game, which isn't easy, but I believe that it depends on our capacity to be a team whether or not we can grab our first road win."
Daniel Santiago - Unicaja A defensive stand over most of the final quarter was enough for Unicaja to defeat Armani Jeans Milano 65-74 on the road in Italy on Thursday for its second consecutive Group B victory. The result leaves Unicaja tied at 2-1 for third place with Maccabi Tel Aviv, both teams trailing undefeated co-leaders Aris TT Bank and Lietuvos Rytas. Milano fell to 0-3 and still shares last place with Le Mans. Neither team could get the upper hand through three quarters, but when Milano went up 55-53 early in the final quarter, Unicaja responded with a 0-15 run over 7 minutes to decide the outcome. Daniel Santiago led the winners with 12 points, while Carlos Cabezas added 11 and German Gabriel 10. Milano seemed boosted by the first appearance this season of teenage phenom Danilo Gallinari, who led all scorers with 18 points, but he didn't get enough help. Travis Watson chipped in 12 points for the hosts.

Santiago dunked to get Unicaja on the scoreboard, while Bulleri started Milano with a reverse layup that Gallinari, in his first appearance this season, copied for a 4-2 home lead. Berni Rodriguez downed a pair of driving layups for Unicaja around one by Watson as everyone got near the rim without trouble. Sanitago hooked before Cabezas hit a layup to make it 6-10 for the guests. Gallinari stole and drilled the game's first outside shot, from long distance, then took a rebound and slammed for an 11-10 Milano lead. Dusan Vukcevic soon came off the Milano bench for a jumper to make it 14-11, but Cabezas hit 2 technical free throws and a three-pointer to seize the lead for Unicaja. Watson put back a rebound to tie as he traded points with Cabezas and Boniface Ndong. Watson's free throws put Milano ahead again before Vukcevic raced fullcourt with the final shot, good for a 23-20 advantage after 10 minutes for the hosts. Watson, Galinari and Vukcevic had all of Milano's points so far.

Travis Watson - AJ MilanoNdong got Unicaja within a point with the first basket of the second quarter, but Reece Gaines hit Milano's second triple to make it 26-21. Gaines returned with a dunk and Vukcevic a jumper as the lead hit 31-24 and turnover-prone Unicaja needed a timeout. Ndong's free throws and a triple by German Gabriel revived the guests, but Milano's bench answered as Cheyne Gadson and newly-signed Mindaugas Katelynas added to the cushion. When Gaines fed Watson inside, the lead hit a new high, 37-29. Unicaja was hurting, but Kus and Gabriel fired in triples in a 2-8 closing run that cut the difference to 39-37 at halftime.

Watson had the only basket in 2 minutes to start the third quarter, but Jimenez hit a tough shot to keep Unicaja close, 41-39. Gallinari downed just 1 of 2 free throws, allowing Unicaja's Jiri Wlsch to make an open three-pointer force a 42-42 tie. Gallinari kept Milano ahead with free throws, but Ndong reset the scoreboard with a turnaround baseline jumper and a monster dunk putting the guests ahead 44-46. After a Milano timeout, Gallinari went coast-to-coast to score a layup over Ndong. Free throws by Rodriguez kept Unicaja up 46-48 until Gaines popped a jumper to tie again. Cabezas took over then with a free throw and a put-back among the big men to make it 48-51 and force a Milano timeout. The quarter ended as it began, with only Watson scoring in the final 2 minutes and Unicaja clinging to a 50-51 advantage.

Davor Kus - UnicajaSantiago and Vukcevic traded baskets to start the final quarter, before Bulleri reappeared with a bomb from the corner to put Milano back in front, 55-53. A technical foul on Gadson led to free throws by Kus that tied it, and really turned the momentum. Santiago lifted in a hook shot to put Unicaja back ahead 55-57 and then drew Watson's fourth foul. Gabriel scored in the post, while Kus and Cabezas hit free throws as Unicaja tried to run away at 55-62. When Popovic drilled a triple from the top, Unicaja had the game's first double-digit lead, 55-65, and soon Jimenez added a triple from the corner to that. Unicaja's defense ruled during all this time, allowing Milano just a free throw in almost 7 minutes until the guests were up 71-58 and fully in charge of their second Group B victory.

Head Coaches

CAJA, ATTILIO
AJ Milano
"We have to try to hold onto some positive things we did in this game. We played good defense for three quarters and tried to create something when we had the ball. We had 12 steals and 6 turnovers in the first half and the key for us is to run the floor. We play too much with our perimeter players and if we can't find some points in fastbreak and transistion, we are in trouble."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"It was a game between two teams going through a bad moment, but we had a great spirit during all the 40 minutes and we were able to hold onto this success. Actually, we missed two players, Haislip and Sanchez, so we lacked chances to have solutions off the bench to change the rhythm of the game. Our management is looking around to find any good opportunity to improve our roster."

Players

BULLERI, MASSIMO
AJ Milano
"We play bad, we lose, no question about it. We are trying to change something with the new coach but we still have a lot of problems. I don't know what can be the best solution for us. We'll see in the future, by working and working."
NDONG, BONIFACE
Unicaja
"The most important thing of this game is that we won, because we felt a lot of pressure after the loss at home in ACB. The injury of a player such as Marcus Haislip is a problem for us but if we want to be a good team we have to find solutions when those things happen, and tonight we did. I am confident to my team after these first games in the Euroleague, which I'm discovering this season and this is a very high level of competition."
