THE TAKE

Two teams looking to revive their Quarterfinal Playoffs hopes clash in group D on Thursday when Partizan Igokea hosts Efes Pilsen at the Pionir Arnea in Belgrade, Serbia. Both teams are coming off devastating losses and know that one more could be too much to overcome by the end of the Top 16. Partizan has started the Top 16 0-2 and last week lost a heart-breaker at defending champion Panathinaikos, 67-65, after leading for much of the evening. The good news for the Serbian champs is that they will play three of the remaining four Group D games at home and still have realistic chances of advancing to the Quarterfinal Playoffs for the first time if they can protect their home floor. Partizan is 4-3 at home this season. On the other hand, Efes is coming off an overtime loss at home to Montepaschi Siena that dampened the team's mood after a Top 16 opening win over Panathinaikos. Now, Efes confronts the fact that four key players - Drew Nicholas, Andre Hutson, Loren Woods and Rashad Lewis - did not make the team flight to Belgrade due to concerns over the political situation in Seriba. A road win might be tough without them, but would propel head coach David Blatt’s men back into the quarterfinals race with at least a share of second place in the group standings. The two teams have only met twice before, with Efes sweeping a regular season series in the 2004-05 season. The last meeting was one of Partizan's worst-ever offensive outputs at home, losing 49-74. Interestingly, of the few players from that game still around, then-teenager Uros Tripkovic scored 22 of Partizan's points and Dusan Kecman, now a starter for Partizan, started that game for Efes. This week's game could focus on the frontcourts. Partizan is lead by center Nikola Pekovic and power forward Novica Velickovic, with 2.29-meter Slavko Vranes waiting in the wings to change games. Even if Woods and Hutson do not play, Efes has Ermal Kuqo and Kerem Gonlum to match up with the hosts, but Blatt would likely employ a smaller lineup, possibly using Kenny Gregory at power forward. Meanwhile Milt Palacio, Kecman and Milenko Tepic, plus reserves Cedomis Vitkovac and Tripkovic, make up the backcourt that will face Scoonie Penn, Ender Arslan and Mustafa Abi, if Nicholas and Wright end up not playing. Following the teams' thrillers last week, this game has all the makings of continuing that pattern. The home-court and desperation favor Partizan, while experience goes to Efes. Partizan has yet to win this season when Pekovic struggles, going 0-4 when he fails to score in double figures. Efes will be sure to note that fact and attack the big guy in what could become the key to victory for both teams.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"Last week we just missed making a miracle in Athens against Panathinaikos. We have the need to book our first win in the Top 16 phase in order to keep our chances for quarterfinals alive. I think Efes Pilsen will come highly motivated because they need a road win so bad. The team from Istanbul deserves our respect. Their main weapon is on offense. But in Pionir Arena, Efes will be welcomed by a highly motivated Partizan."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"Our group is proving a very complicated and quality one. Certainly Partizan Igokea this year has shown their quality and they have many talented players and a very good system over time. They are very tough opponent especially in Pionir Arena. And they also had very good games on the road this year. All games in this group are so tough so we don’t expect anything different in this game."

"Efes Pilsen finished the regular season placed fourth in the group and they beat Panathinaikos in first Top 16 game. Last week they lost to Montepaschi in overtime and I think that loss cut their motivation before the game in Belgrade. But Efes is still looking for the way to the quaterfinals and I am sure they believe that the game with Partizan is an ideal opportunity to book a road win. We lost two road games and we shall finaly play in front of our fans. I hope we are ready for our first Top 16 win because we prepared well for that game."
Nikola Pekovic and Kerem Gonlum - Partizan Igokea - Efes Pilsen Partizan Igokea took advantage of a short-handed opponent to win its first Top 16 game in Group D by 78-65 over visiting Efes Pilsen on Thursday in Belgrade, Serbia. Partizan and Efes both have 1-2 records now and are tied for second place with Panathinaikos, all three behind undefeated Montepaschi. Efes played without four key contributors - Drew Nicholas, Loren Woods, Andre Hutson and Rashad Wright - who did not fly with the team over their personal security concerns despite assurances of safety from host city and club. The game was held without incident. Despite winning the first quarter, Efes flagged in the face of Partizan's bench strength, losing major ground in the second quarter and never being able to make up the large differences. Nikola Pekovic again paced Partizan, with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Milt Palacio added 14 points, while Dusan Kecman had 9 and 8 rebounds. For Efes, Kenny Gregory checked in with 19 points, while Scoonie Penn and Ermal Kuqo added 13 each and Kerem Gonlum 11. Partizan's 36-23 advantage on the boards was key in what was otherwise an even game.

Partizan took advantage of the missing Efes starters to mount an early 5-0 lead thanks to a triple from Kecman and second-chance points from Slavko Vranes. Palacio joined the scoring with 5 straight points as the hosts vaulted ahead by 15-7 midway through the first quarter. Partizan's star, Pekovic, had not come off the bench yet as the 2.29-meter Vranes started and stayed on the court, but when Efes struck back with a 0-5 run, the switch was made by home coach Dusan Vujosevic. Efes kept its momentum, however, as Kuqo hit from downtown and Gonlum scored on a fastbreak to make it 17-17. And when Ender Arslan downed a triple on the first-quarter buzzer, Efes led 19-20 after 10 minutes.

Kerem Gonlum - Efes PilsenCedomir Vitkovac opened second period with a three-point shot for the hosts, but Kuqo did the same on the other side for Efes. Pekovic helped Partizan take a lead again before Milenko Tepic capped an 8-0 run with a triple. Partizan led by 32-26 midway through the second quarter and pushed a high rhythm that Efes found hard to combat with its shortage of players. Tepic inspired another 7-0 blast for the hosts, pushing the Partizan advantage to 39-28, where the score remained at the end of first half, when Pekovic was the only scorer in double digits, with 10 points.

Gregory and Palacio traded three-point plays as both teams played stronger defense at the begining of the second half. Partizan kept guarding its double-digit leads, however, as the score reached 44-33 in minute 25. A couple minutes later, Dejan Borovnjak scored from the paint and Partizan led 50-37. That was the sign to the frenetic home fans to start singing, but plenty of minutes remained. Arslan strung together 4 points to bring Efes closer on the scoreboard. Uros Tripkovic missed twice from behind the arc and Vranes fell into foul trouble as Efes cut the gap further, to single digits, at 52-43 after 30 minutes.

Milt Palacio - Partizan IgokeaTepic brought back the double-digits lead by shooting from downtown early in the final quarter. Kecman joined him as Partizan boosted its lead to 62-47 after 8-0 run. Penn hit a triple and added a jumper to bring some hope back to the guests, but Kecman scored key triple and Partizan led 65-52 with 5 minutes left. Tripkovic joined him as Palacio ended the hosts's newest run at 8-2. Efes tried long-distance shots but time was working in Partizan's favor and by the time Pekovic and Novica Velickovic combined to make it 76-59, the Belgrade fans were celebrating a first Top 16 victory.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"We were aware that we had to win that game and that was additional pressure on us. Efes players were extremely motivated to make a miracle in Belgrade and we had lot of trouble in the first half. Later we established our rhythm, but it was a hard game until the very end. Thanks to our fans for their support."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"First of all I want to congratulate the Partizan team. They played better tonight. It was very difficult for us to win this game according to circumstances, but we were competing and struggled. I want to salute tonight the basketball fans of Partizan. This is a wonderful place to play, really."

Players

VITKOVAC, CEDOMIR
Partizan Igokea
"A very important win. I am really sorry because Efes was missing four players. We are still in the competition for the quarterfinals and we shall try to win each upcoming game. I think we need two more wins, but I do not like calculations. We are thinking about us and nothing else."
KUQO, ERMAL
Efes Pilsen
"Congratulations to Partizan for the win they deserved. They were terrific tonight. And it was a terrific atmosphere for basketball. Pionir Arena is the basketball cathedral I was watching when I was a kid. Tonight we played with six players and two youngsters without Euroleague experience."
