THE TAKE

Two teams with no other ambition than reaching the Quarterfinal Playoffs from Group G face each other in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday night when Partizan hosts Unicaja at a fully-packed Pionir Arena in front of an outstanding basketball atmosphere. Both teams are tied at 1-1 behind undefeated leader Panathinaikos, so it is safe to say that this is a pivotal game in Group G. Unicaja is facing severe injury problems, as Carlos Cabezas will not travel to Belgrade due to a leg injury. As such, Omar Cook will be Unicaja's only fulltime point guard in this game, with Joseph Gomis and Berni Rodriguez offering a helping hand. Cook has a critical matchup against Aleksandar Rasic, but Partizan coach Dusko Vujosevic will probably use defensive ace Petar Bozic against him, too. With Rodriguez and Gomis seeing minutes at point guard, Unicaja coach Aito Garcia Reneses may have to use a whole different rotation. Jiri Welsch and Thomas Kelati is set to see extended playing time at both wings along with small forward Carlos Jimenez. Kelati will test his defensive skills against sharp shooter Uros Tripkovic, who has been in great shape recently. Welsch and Rodriguez will see playing time against Milenko Tepic. Partizan starts the game with a tall lineup that features versatile ace Jan Vesely at small forward, so his matchup with Jimenez will be important in this game. Unicaja must be ready to stop Novica Velickovic, who has been unstoppable so far in the Top 16. Velickovic leads an interesting frontcourt that also features giant center Slavko Vranes and defensive ace Stephane Lasme, with Vesely seeing time at power forward, too. Velickovic must be ready to face Marcus Haislip in a key matchup. Velickovic hopes to use his power and driving skills against Haislip, who has a unique combination of deep shooting range and unbelievable athleticism. Robert Archibald will battle against Vranes, while Lasme is ready for a big defensive battle against Boni Ndong. German Gabriel could be Unicaja's X-factor because of his post moves and shooting range. Unicaja must stop Velickovic and overcome Cabezas's absence to return to Malaga with an important road win. Meanwhile, Partizan must put pressure on Cook, as well as dominate the defensive boards with Vesely and Lasme. Intensity will be high with both teams knowing that a win could set the stage for a run to the quarterfinals and beyond.

GAME NOTES

Partizan
  • Guard Milenko Tepic’s streak of making at least one three-pointer in 16 consecutive Euroleague games came to an end last week when he did not shoot at all from downtown.
  • Guard Uros Tripkovic has made at least one three-pointer in 10 consecutive Euroleague games.
  • Guard Aleksandar Rasic and Unicaja power forward Marcus Haislip were teammates at Efes Pilsen during the 2006-07 season.
  • The magic number for Partizan has been 80 points. The Serbian champs have won 11 of the last 12 games in which they have scored at least 80.
  • Forward Jan Vesely has made 17 of 19 two-point shots since the midway point of the regular season. He is 0 for 10 from downtown in that same stretch.
Unicaja
  • Forward Carlos Jimenez picked up the 100th steal in his Euroleague Basketball career last week.
  • Guard Berni Rodriguez is just 1 steal shy of reaching 100 for Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Point guard Omar Cook has dished at least 3 assists in every game this season and at least 5 assists in more than half of them.
  • Cook played under Partizan head coach Dusko Vujosevic on the Montenegrin national team over the summer. Partizan center Slavko Vranes was also on the team.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Unicaja's home loss to Panathinaikos gave us certain chances. The team from Malaga is still a favorite to reach the quaterfinals' phase but after they lost at home, the game with us became more important. Due to that, our visitors will be highly motivated and concentrated. I hope our lineup is going to be complete. Some players like Slavko Vranes and Jan Vesely have been in bed for five or six days due to high temperature. But even if they were not 100 percent ready, it would be easier with them than without them. We are all aware of the moment and we shall give our best to make a surprise and win."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"Partizan is a team in which everyone knows how to play, as it is a tradition with the Serbian teams. We will be finding a great atmosphere at Pionir and a 2.29 meter player whi can change the playing style of any rival. I don't think they are that young, it was also said by Michael Jordan that he was young in the Los Angeles Olympics and we all know what happened. When someone has talent, the age is not such an important factor, plus they have experienced players like Tripkovic, Tepic and otheres. If we win, we will have options to go to the playoffs by winning at home against Rome and Partizan, but we will have to work hard until the end."

Players

LASME, STEPHANE
Partizan
"Last week, we beat Lottomatica at home. If Unicaja was not better than Lottomatica, they would never have beaten them in Rome. So if we want to win on Wednesday, we need even more of a quality performance than we had last week. I think the most important thing is not to change our system of playing and to attack bravely. The last Adriatic League game with Crvena Zvezda was the best prologue to the game with Unicaja because they both play the same aggressive defense, at the edge of fouling, with a lot of double-teaming. We were handling it well on Saturday, and I hope we shall do the same on Wednesday."
JIMENEZ, CARLOS
Unicaja
"We go there with the confidence boost we had with our win against DKV Joventut in the Spanish League, which is also a complicated court. We know we have a good chance, but it is a Euroleague road game and those are the toughest ones to prepare. The pressure however, can fall on the host's side and we can get rid of that tension of being forced to win. We have to focus on securing home wins and any positive result we can get on the road will be great for us. The atmosphere there is really tough on rivals and that goes on their favor, that's why we must be aware of that difficulty and face the game with concentration."
Novica Velickovic - PartizanPartizan Belgrade took over second place in Group G of the Top 16 when it staved off visiting Unicaja 60-59 in a physical defensive battle before another sold-out Pionior Arena on Wednesday. Novica Velickovic hit 1 of 2 free throws with 5 seconds left to break a tie and lift Partizan to a 2-1 record with its second consecutive victory. Unicaja's second straight loss dropped it to 1-2 and third place. Velickovic and Uros Tripkovic finished with 12 points each for the winners and triggered a pair of quick runs that made the difference. Velickovic had 5 points on a 16-0 Partizan run split evenly on either side of halftime. He was back to score 5 points and assist a triply by Tripkovic in a 7-0 takeover run early in the final quarter. And when Unicaja tied with 10 seconds left on Omar Cook's free throws, Velickovic did what was needed to seal the victory at the finish. Stephane Lasme added 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks for Partizan. In posting its lowest point total of the season, Unicaja got 12 points each from Cook and Jiri Welsch, while Marcus Haislip added 10 and 7 rebounds. However, Partizan's 45-34 edge on the backboards, including 15 offensive rebounds, proved significant in keeping the victory at home.

Omar Cook - UnicajaMilenko Tepic posted up inside for the game's first basket, while Unicaja took more than 2 minutes, until Haislip's put-back, to tie 2-2. Tepic answered with a baseline jumper, but Haislip rained a triple for Unicaja's first lead. Strahinja Milosevic restored Partizan's advantage inside and Lasme preserved it with a big block that Milosevic converted with a fastbreak layup at 8-5. Boniface Ndong came on and banked in his first attempt for Unicaja, but neither team could finish its shots against swarming defenses as the scoreboard stuck at 8-7. Ndong broke the drought and regained the lead for Unicaja with a baseline turnaround jumper. Jan Vesely took it back for Partizan with a tip-in, but Welsch changed the lead again with a fastbreak layup for a 10-11 score for Unicaja after one quarter.

Tripkovic dropped a running hook to put Partizan ahead again to start the second quarter. Joseph Gomis got a fastbreak layup-plus-free throw for Unicaja before feeding German Gabriel for another three-point play at 12-17. Cedomir Vitkovac made 2 of 2 free throws and Lasme a layup for Partizan, then Gabriel scored inside to keep Unicaja up 16-19. Welsch expanded on the lead with a big triple for the guests, whose defense and rebounding was limiting Partizan's chances in attack. Lasme finally got a basket back for Partizan, but 4-for-4 free-throw shooting by Robert Archibald kept Unicaja comfortably ahead, 18-26. Velickovic's first basket in 8 shots gave Partizan hope, then Tripkovic kept it going with his own 4-for-4 at the line, aided by a technical foul on Archibald. The Partizan crowd got back in the game for real as Petar Bozic swished a lane jumper to forge a 26-26 tie at the break.

Stephane Lasme - PartizanAleksander Rasic lifted the crowd to its feet by opening the second half with a triple. They were still jumping as Lasme added free throws, so when Velickovic fired from downtown, Pionir Arena exploded for a 34-26 scoreboard as Unicaja called timeout. Ndong ended Unicaja's slide with a dunk off an inbounds play, Cook responded next, with a long drive that came with a free throw, cutting the difference to 34-31. Berni Rodriguez kept Unicaja gaining ground with a pair of free throws before Archibald went to the line, too, and hit 1 of 2 for a 34-34 tie. A pair of quiet minutes ended with Haislip getting fouled on a deep three-point attempt and making all 3 free throws for a new Unicaja lead, 34-37. Bozic finally answered for Partizan with a layup, but Haislip matched it. Vesely dunked back an offensive rebound, reigniting the crowd at 38-39. Tepic got to the line next, making both to give Partizan the lead back. Welsch answered, also from the foul line, but layups by Zarko Rakocevic and Lasme ended the third quarter as it started, with Partizan in charge, 44-41.

Gomis scored inside to tighten the score at the start of the final quarter. The tension rose through a couple minutes of defensive stops and nervous misses until Tripkovic's triple from the wing rattled in to make it 47-43 for Partizan. Cook got free on the other end, however, and swished his triple, and when Tripkovic missed from the arc, Welsch scored on the fastbreak and was fouled for a three-point play that put the visitors suddenly in front, 47-49. Rasic's pick-and-roll pass to Lasme for a long-armed layup tied it up, 49-49, and recharged the crowd, but Gomis stole and fed Welsch alone to put Unicaja ahead again. Just when he was needed, Velickovic reappeared with a game-tying on a layup and dunked on the break to seize a new lead. When he passed out to Tripkovic for a sweet triple, Partizan had a 7-0 run and a 56-51 lead with under 3 minutes left. Neither team could score for 90 seconds before a steal by Carlos Jimenez sent Cook for a fastbreak layup. After a Partizan miss, Jimenez made 2 of 2 free throws with 32 seconds left to make it 56-55. Partizan looked to Velickovic, who drove down the lane for a lefthanded one-hander over Ndong and Haislip with 18 seconds left. Cook went back to the line, hitting 2 more free throws at 58-57. Unicaja fouled Lasme with 10 seconds left, but he made only 1 of 2. Partizan fouled Cook, who made both shots wiht 5 seconds left, for a 59-59 tie. The visitors then fouled Velickovic, however, and he hit the first of his 2 free throws, putting Partizan ahead. With the rebound of Velickovic's miss, Cook drove the length of the floor but his own shot fell short, letting a big victory stay in Belgrade.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"It’s a real big victory. Unicaja was under pressure after they lost a home game to Panathinaikos last week and they were looking for the road win in Belgrade. We managed to limit their fastbreaks, but we showed weakness guarding Unicaja’s big men. At the end we made lot of mistakes, which caused drama in the final minute. Thanks to our great fans, we booked such an important win tonight."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"I think it was a tight game, more or less. We made for ourselves a problem because we did not manage to keep the leading margin we built in the first half. After several bad minutes in the third period when we lost concentration, we played better, but it was not enough. We made a key foul with 4 seconds left, but the truth is that we tried to steal the ball, not to make foul. The Partizan fans are really unbelievable. Our fans in Malaga are great, but here the fans are just unbelievable."

Players

TEPIC, MILENKO
Partizan
"It was a very tough game. Maybe the toughest this season so far. Both teams were almost equal all the way, playing basket for basket. The low shooting percentages tells how important that game was. We compensated for our low percentage with lots of offensive rebounds and I think we were a better team tonight than Unicaja."
BOZIC, PETAR
Partizan
"The final score tells how hard of a game it was. Both teams played tough defense. We did not played like we can, but we aware of the importance of the game. The most important thing is that we won."
WELSCH, JIRI
Unicaja
"Congratulations to Partizan. We expected a game like that with a lot of double teaming and lot of mistakes. In the final minutes, we made many mistakes in offense. Tonight we were weaker than we were during the season. Partizan saved its chances to reach the quarterfinals but don’t forget there is one more game in Malaga."
