The Take

Group C will have one fewer undefeated team after Winterthur FCB and Benetton Treviso clash in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday in a battle of very familiar foes. Barcelona won its road opener at Pau-Orthez in come-from-behind fashion, 67-72. Benetton won the opposite way, leading from start to finish in a 95-82 home decision over Zalgiris. These teams are very familiar with each other, not only from plenty of confrontations over the years, but because Barcelona now has Denis Marconato, the long-time Benetton center who is also the Euroleague's all-time leader in blocked shots and games played. Against Pau-Orthez, however, it was young big man Jordi Trias who paced Barcelona inside with a double-double of 11 points, 11 rebounds, plus 5 assists and 3 steals. Juan Carlos Navarro came off the bench for 23 points. Barcelona's tough defense did the rest, but it will likely have its hands a little fuller against Benetton, which shot 71% on two-pointers and 54.5% on threes in the opener. Forward Spencer Nelson hit 6 of 7 triples himself, and if he stays hot against such tough Barcelona defenders as Rodrigo De la Fuente, will give his team a better chance. The point guard matchup between Nikos Zisis of Benetton against Jaka Lakovic and Roko-Leni Ukic will be one to watch. Zisis will get plenty help from Marco Mordente and Terrell Lyday, combined for 22 points and 7 steals against Zalgiris. Inside, Marcus Goree leads benetton against Trias, Marconato, Fran Vazquez, Michalis Kakiouzis and Mario Kasun. The chances that Navarro can disrupt Benetton's perimeter defense just as much as Nelson can put Barcelona off-balance will be one of the plot lines in this game. But the fact that both teams have several candidates to change the game on offense or defense make this game a great candidate for an early-season thriller in Group C.

Quotes Head Coaches

Winterthur FC Barcelona
"We want to win our first Euroleague game of the season at home and show in that way to all teams how difficult is going to be taking a win in Barcelona this year. Benetton is playing now in a similar way that Maccabi Tel Aviv used to do with Pini Gershon as coach. You can see that David Blatt was working at Maccabi. They like to play an open game, with many pick-and-rolls, always seeking room for a shot. Their possesions are short, they always look for a fast shot. In defense, they are used to forcing many turnovers. They create many chances and it's not a problem to get in a mismatch. They play hard and try to make many steals in order to counter-attack."
Benetton Basket
"It's going to be one of the most excting games for us. We have to go to Barcelona with the right spirit and motivation. Our next opponent is on the four top European teams on paper. They had some troubles at the beginning of this season, like we had, but I think that they are raising their level of basktball. On our side, we are in the same way and we want to continue to improve. It's not easy to go to Barcelona and play your kind of basketball but we want to try to find out the way to do it on Thursday. I expect 100 percent from my guys. If we stay focused and play as a team for the whole time, we can do a good job."

Winterthur FC Barcelona
"Of course, this will be an special game for me, for many reasons. Benetton has been the team of my lifetime an I'm sure that there will be very special feelings for me on Thusrday. But when the game begins, my only thought will be to get the win. We need to play in the same good way as in recent games. The game at Pau was a difficult one, but we managed to win and now we have to do it again at home. You have to win at home in order to get a spot in the Top 16."
Benetton Basket
"It's time for another battle in the Euroleague, against a great team iin a great atmosphere, because there we will find a hot arena waiting for us. But this is not a problem. Everything is in our hands and we will try to get the win after the good start we had in this competition last week. Barcelona is a balanced team, so we need top concentration and aggresiveness. Defending well, getting rebounds to open the floor with fastbreaks, moving the ball quickly on the offensive side: these are our tasks for Thursday."
Mario Kasun - Winterthur FCB Winterthur FC Barcelona stayed undefeated in Group C by downing Benetton Treviso 82-69 at home in Spain on Thursday. Barcelona is now tied with CSKA Moscow atop the Group C standings, each with a 2-0 record. Meanwhile, Benetton joins a four-way tie for the third places in the standings along with Pau-Orthez, Zalgiris Kaunas and Aris TT Bank, all now 1-1. Juan Carlos Navarro led the winners with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Mario Kasun added 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting while Jaka Lakovic and Gianluca Basile each had 13 points. Marcus Goree had 19 points for Benetton coming off the bench. Terrell Lyday added 14 points and Nikos Zisis 12 for the guests. Kasun shined in the opening quarter to give Barcelona a 23-13 lead after 10 minutes, while strong man-to-man defense allowed the hosts to keep a 43-31 margin at halftime. Navarro stepped up in the third quarter and Barcelona soon made it a 24-point game, 67-43. Goree and Lyday brought Benetton within 72-60, but Barcelona had no problems to seal a well-deserved win.

Kasun opened the game with an easy layup which Nikos Zisis erased with a short jumper. Navarro fired in a floating layup while Benetton struggled to score early. Kasun shined with a reverse layup whle Jordi Trias fed Navarro for an easy layup, good for a 8-2 Barcelona lead. Joey Beard got Benetton going with back-to-back layups but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, Kasun and Lakovic hit free throws to give Barcelona a 11-6 lead. Angelo Gigli and Lakovic exchanged three-pointers, while a red hot Kasun shined with a fastbreak dunk, forcing a Benetton timeout at 16-9. Zisis stepped up with a driving layup but Trias bettered it with a layup-plus-foul while Kasun added a monster dunk to push Barcelona's lead to double digits, 21-11. Nelson scored in the low post but Gianluca Basile buried a long jumper for a 23-13 Barcelona margin after 10 minutes.

Goree and Lyday - Benetton TrevisoGoree tried to ignit the Benetton comeback with a shot-clock beating three-pointer and a baseline jumper, but free throws by Denis Marconato and a big triple by Basile kept Barcelona fully ahead, 28-18. Benetton tried to increase the game tempo but Barcelona was fully focused in defense. Goree bureid his second triple but Rodrigo De La Fuente answered from downtown and fed Fran Vazquez for a power layup, forcing a Benetton timeout at 33-21. Marco Mordente took over with a floating layup and Zisis canned a jumper in a 0-6 Benetton run which Angelo Gigli capped with an easy basket to give the guests some hope at 33-27. It didn't last long, as Basile and Lakovic each buried one from downtown to keep Barcelona out of trouble at 39-27. Goree shined with a big basket coming off the baseline but Kasun followed free throws with a left-handed jump hook. Matteo Soragna scored around the basket to bring Benetton within 43-31 at halftime. The guests did not attempt a single free throw in the first half.

Navarro opened the second half in style with a corner triple to which Nelson replied with a put-back layup. Navarro insisted from downtown to make it a 16-point game, 49-33 early in the third quarter. Kasun kept pacing Barcelona with an easy layup and by the time Basile fired in a six-meter jumper, the hosts led by 20, 53-33. Terrell Lyday scored his first points on a driving layup, igniting a 0-7 Benetton run in which Goree followed a triple with the guests' first free throws of the night to get his team within 53-40. Kasun - who else? - scored again around the basket while Basile buried a corner three-pointer which Lyday matched in the other end. An unstoppable Kasun dunked it while Navarro followed free throws with an unbelievable three-pointer in a 9-0 run which Jakovic capped with a running jumper. Lyday buried another triple and Goree shined with a put-back dunk, but Barcelona kept a 67-50 lead after three quarters.

Lyday stayed hot with a big three-pointer early in the final period. Navarro got Barcelona back in track with a floating layup which Zisis erased with a mid-range jumper to bring Benetton within 69-54 with 8 minutes to go. It didn't last long, however, as Navarro nailed a three-pointer while Benetton had troubles to score in the other end. Even with that, Gigli hit free throws and Goree shined with a big dunk to make Barcelona call timeout at 72-58. Nelson kept fueling the Benetton comeback with a tip-in which Marconato erased with free throws while Lakovic sealed the outcome with a three-pointer, as Barcelona led 77-60 with 4 minutes to go. Nothing changed until the final buzzer, as Barcelona cruised to a big home win and showed that few teams will be able to win in Palau Blaugrana this season.

Head Coaches

Winterthur FC Barcelona
"I'm satisfied with my team...until we got our biggest lead. We need to be smart. When we play good defense, it's easier to play well on offense, with more confidence. This is the key. We are far from the level where I want my team to play. If we can make our fans become our sixth player, this will be a big plus. Kasun has played better. He has scored 19 points, but has taken two rebounds only. Trias is playing really well on both ends of the court and is a very important player for us."
Benetton Basket
"Barcelona is a very strong team. They have last year's nucleous and have added some great players right now. They didn't start the season very well, but now you can see the engine is running better and better. As I said before, Barcelona is one of the four best teams in Europe. They executed very well tonight, on defense and on offense as well. They defended very well and could take some easy shots. It's a very strong team. Our team is a very new one. We are rebuilding it and we haven't had enough time to play at this level."

Winterthur FC Barcelona
"It was easier than expected today. We managed to control the situation since the beginning, but we need to learn to keep going until the end of the game, because we tend to commit some mistakes. This is a part of the game where we need to improve. Now we are in good form, with four wins in a row. Now, we have another big game in the Spanish League, against Tau. Another test for us."
Benetton Basket
"In the first half we let them take too many offensive rebounds. This was the key at the beginning. In the second half they got a 10-point run and it was impossible for us to recover. We tried and we managed to reduce the gap, no more. Barcelona is a very good team and the played very well tonight. We lacked some speed in our offensive plays. Of course, this is a game that you can lose easily, but perhaps in another manner. We need some time."
