THE TAKE

A battle for a Top 16 will take place on Wednesday when Unicaja hosts Lottomatica Roma in Group G in Malaga, Spain. Both teams are out of the Quarterfinal Playoffs race, as Panathinaikos and Partizan have already mathematically advanced to the next round. Lottomatica (0-4) will look for its first Top 16 win, while Unicaja (1-3) is looking to break its three-game losing streak. Unicaja is facing severe injury problems: Both Jiri Welsch and German Gabriel missed this weekend's Spanish League game against Pamesa Valencia, while center Robert Archibald (flu) and big man Boni Ndong (back problems) missed training sessions and are questionable for the game against Lottomatica. As such, Marcus Haislip will be his team's main reference in the paint. Depending on Archibald and Ndong's evolution, youngster Vitor Faverani may see extended playing time and Carlos Jimenez could see some minutes at power forward. Haislip faces for a big matchup against Andre Hutson. Meanwhile, Angelo Gigli and Primoz Brezec will try to take advantage on the circumstance inside. Three-point specialist Roberto Gabini offers toughness and deep range off the guests' bench. Unicaja will be most concerned with stopping Sani Becirovic, who hopes to bounce back from an under-whelming Top 16 after a fantastic regular season. Becirovic will get some help from defensive stopper Rodrigo De La Fuente, talented small forward Luigi Datome and sharp shooter Ruben Douglas. Berni Rodriguez seems the right man to stop Becirovic due to his quickness, experience and defensive skills. Meanwhile, De La Fuente has the tough mission to slow Thomas Kelati, while Douglas will test his shooting skills against Joseph Gomis. Lottomatica is deep at point guard, especially since Ibby Jaaber has been unstoppable lately. He will get some help from Brandon Jennings and experienced playmaker Jacopo Giachetti. Jaaber has a key matchup against Omar Cook, while Carlos Cabezas will try to use his experience and driving skills against Giachetti and Jennings. Unicaja must be its usual self in defense while trying to get the crowd involved in the hosts' final Euroleague home game this season. Lottomatica must try to find Hutson and Brezec down low while allowing Jaaber to control the game and play up-tempo. Lottomatica has lost six straight Euroleague games and has not won on the road since November, but it will surely be eager to take advantage of Unicaja’s injury woes to end its slide.

GAME NOTES

Unicaja
  • Guard Berni Rodriguez is just 1 steal shy of reaching 100 for Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Point guard Omar Cook dished a season-high 8 assists last week. He has at least 3 assists in every game this season and at least 5 assists in more than half of them.
  • Power forward Marcus Haislip scored a season-high 22 points against Lottomatica when they met in the Top 16 opener in January.
Lottomatica Roma
  • Guard Sani Becirovic needs 1 more steal to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Forward Roberto Gabini came off the bench to hit 3 three-pointers and score a season-high 13 points in 15 minutes last week against Panathinaikos.
  • Big man Angelo Gigli recorded a Euroleague career-high 10 rebounds against Unicaja when the teams met in the Top 16 opener in January.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"It is true that playing an international game is always interesting and that most of the time, players prefer to play than to practise, so the best practice you can get is a game of this kind. We have to try to win and improve as a team step by step, always aspiring to win but not constantly linking it to the fact whether you won or lost the last game."
GENTILE, NANDO
Lottomatica Roma
"We are out of the Euroleague, but I consider the game with Unicaja Malaga a chance to gain further experience and to refine some of our game systems. In any case, in Malaga we want to honor the competition."

Players

COOK, OMAR
Unicaja
"A Euroleague game is always good to play. For us, it is a shame to have ran out of options to qualify for the Playoffs, but a game against the second team in Italy right now is always a challenge. Playinga against Lottomatica Roma will be hard because it is a quality team, we have already faced them. The two remaining games in the Top 16 will be of good use to us to improve as a team in details. We will get on court to fight until the end because we want to close our European season in front of our people with a win."
JAABER, IBRAHIM
Lottomatica Roma
"Every time you go on the court, you can learn something new, so I am convinced that the game with Malaga is a very good opportunity to improve in order to get ready for the final part of the Italian League."
Thomas Kelati - UnicajaUnicaja finally got its first Top 16 home victory by thrashing Lottomatica Roma 99-64 in Malaga, Spain, in Group G on Wednesday. Despite of improving to 2-3, Unicaja was out of the Quarterfinal Playoffs race already before the tip-off, as was the still winless Lottomatica. Though both clubs missed important players due to injuries, sharpshooter Thomas Kelati made it a night to remember for Malaga's fans. He needed only 7 attempts to nail an impressive 6 three-pointers in the first quarter and added 3 more triples in the second half to tie Saulius Stombergas's eight-year old Euroleague record of 9 three-pointers in a single game. Kelati finished with a career-high 33 points to go with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Marcus Haislip and Vitor Faverani worked hard inside to score 16 points each - a career-high for Faverani - Joseph Gomes added 13 points, while another big man, Paulo Prestes chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds in his Euroleague debut for Unicaja. For Roma, Brandon Jennings was the top scorer with 17 points, Angelo Gigli notched 13 points and pulled down 9 rebounds and Ruben Douglas had 10 points.

Brandon Jenkins - Lottomatica RomaPrestes made a put-back and then a layup off an Omar Cook assist to score Unicaja's first 4 points, but Gigli had some sweet revenge at the other end, dunking on Prestes despite being fouled. Kelati drilled a three-pointer to make it 7-4 in the hosts's favor. Next, Prestes dunked off another put-back and Cook nailed a triple to widen the margin to 12-6. Ibrahim Jaaber scored from way behind the ark for Lottomatica, but Kelati took over with back-to-back three-pointers, a layup and yet another triple, single-handedly outscoring the visitors 11-0 to expand Unicaja's advantage to 25-11. After Ruben Douglas scored for the guests, Kelati hit his fifth three-pointer, before he finished the quarter by stealing the ball and making his sixth three-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer to make it 31-15.

Faverani opened the second quarter with a pair of layups for the hosts, before Jennings ignited a 2-7 Roma run with 5 points and an alley-oop assist to Jaaber, cutting the difference to 37-24. But Gomis scored 5 points to lead a 7-0 Unicaja response to make it a 20-point game: 44-24. Though an aggressive Jennings was good for more points, and Luigi Datome worked inside to help him with a put-back, Haislip wouldn't let Roma come closer. Haislip dunked off an offensive rebound, hit 2 free throws, a corner triple and a two-pointer, scoring 9 points in an 11-0 run by Unicaja that closed the first half at 55-30.

Marcus Haislip - UnicajaKelati continued to torture Lottomatica from behind the arc at the start of the third quarter, while Haislip did his damage from the free throw line. After Jennings split free throws at the other end, Cook found an open Kelati for his eighth triple of the night that made it 63-31. Jennings kept attacking with a layup and 2 free throws, but Lottomatica just wasn't able to make stops on defense, as Faverani punished them with 2 straight dunks. Kelati was once again open to hit his ninth three-pointer. Haislip and Faverani scored 4 free throws, before Jennings ran coast to coast, Douglas made a shot and Brezec a put-back to make it 75-45. Berni Rodriguez and Carlos Cabezas finished the third quarter with a triple and 2 free throws, and it was 80-45 with 10 minutes to go.

Gigli scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter, before Gomis answered with 6 straight at the other end. After taking a rest on the bench, Kelati re-entered the court, as the game's only unanswered question was whether he would succeed in breaking the Euroleague single-game three-point record. Meanwhile, Prestes and Haislip kept dominating inside to make it 90-51. Datome and Gigli worked inside, too, while Kelati chased the record, but stepped on the line when he made what seemed to be his tenth triple. Kelati had another clear look with 19 seconds left on the clock, but couldn't hit, and his tough buzzer-beater attempt rimed out as well.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"This game has been very useful for several things. One is the performance of Kelati, who returned to his normal form after a bad period of one month. The other is the opportunity for players like Faverani, who has fulfilled our expectations even taking into account the game that Roma has played. I am not worried about the victory, but about using this game for the improvement of the team."
GENTILE, NANDO
Lottomatica Roma
"The most important thing about the game is that it has finished. Our mentality has not been good and I have suffered watching my team, because I have not seen any reaction."

Players

FAVERANI, VITOR
Unicaja
"I have fulfilled my objectives: I have played and we have won the game. We have played a very good game in attack and I felt good. Our objective was to win the game to show all our fans that we are one of the best basketball teams in Europe."
