THE TAKE

The third-highest scoring team in the Eurocup so far, Cajasol hosts a tough rival in Hapoel Jerusalem Tuesday night, in what should be an all out battle for first place in Group G. With both teams 1-0, the winner is assured the top position and a leg up in the battle to reach the Last 16. Head coach Joan Plaza’s men were impressive in their debut road win over CEZ Basketball Nymburk with a balanced attack and five men in double digit scoring figures. Still, veteran guard Louis Bullock remains the main go-to guy on offense, and his perimeter battle with the athletic Jason Rich should be the subplot of the game. Rich will be flanked by steady point guard Willie Solomon, who can manage the offense as well as lead it in the scoring department with his long-range shooting. Yuval Naimy and Yogev Ohayon give Jerusalem head coach Oded Kattash excellent options off the bench, while swingman Dion Dowell could spell Rich in defense on Bullock. Jerusalem also signed big man Amit Tamir to beef up a front line that already features plenty of muscle and shooting touch in Brian Randle at power forward and Sam Clancy down low. His low post duel with multiskilled Paul Davis should also entertain throughout. Guard Txemi Urtasun and forward Mindaugas Katelynas factors off the bench in Week 1. Cajasol will look for Kaloyan Ivanov to effectively seal the glass on defense against Clancy and co. In a game with plenty of X factors, attention to detail will be mandatory.

Quotes Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Hapoel Jerusalem
"We had a tough week but a good one with three wins. It gets harder now with Cajasol, a strong team with players with experience in the high level. They had an easy win last week against Nymburk who are also strong. We aim to do our best regardless of our injuries that we have for some players."

"To go further in this competition you have to beat the best and Seville are one of those teams. It's not easy because they have quality all through the squad but with a bit of luck we will try to make a tough game for them."
Will Solomon - Hapoel JerusalemHapoel Jerusalem became the only defeated team in Group G by edging Cajasol 72-76 in Seville, Spain on Tuesday. Hapoel leads Group G with a 2-0 record, with Cajasol and CEZ Nymburk right behind at 1-1. Willie Solomon led the winners with 26 points on 5-of-5 two-pointers and 4-of-8 triples. Sam Clancy added 16 points while Jason Rich had 11 for Hapoel. Tariq Kirksay led CCajasol with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Txemi Urtasun added 13 while Tomas Satoransky had 12 for the hosts. Solomon led a 1-16 run that allowed Hapoel to get a double-digit lead, 29-40, at halftime. Cajasol, led by an outstanding Kirksay, needed just 3 minutes to briefly regain the lead, 43-42, right after the break. Solomon, Clancy and Dion Dowell kept pacing Hapoel but Urtasun sparked a late rally that brought Cajasol as close as 72-83 with 25.3 seconds left. Rich scored off a critical steal and split free throws to lead Hapoel to a well-deserved road win.

Kirksay needed just 4 seconds to get Cajasol going with a driving basket but Yogev Ohayon quickly answered with a layup. Mindaugas Katelynas followed an uncontested layup with a bomb from downtown and Kirksay joined the three-point shootout for an 11-4 Cajasol lead. Solomon struck from downtown and Rich banked in a shot to keep Hapoel within 11-9. Urtasun buried a seven-meter bomb but free throws by Brian Randle and Solomon kept the guests as close as 14-12. Juanjo Triguero shined with a backdoor layup that Clancy matched with a power basket. Louis Bullock shined with a driving layup and Joan Sastre added a wild acrobatic basket but Ohayon beat the buzzer to keep the guests within 20-16 after 10 minutes. Clancy hit a running hook early in the second quarter and matched Bullock's fallaway jumper with a power basket. Sastre struck from downtown but a two-handed dunk by Randle got Hapoel within 25-22. Clancy stayed on fire with a tip-in and a jumper by Rich gave Hapoel its first lead, 25-26. Dowell and Solomon soon struck from downtown in a 1-16 run that gave Hapoel a 26-36 margin. Paul Davis hit free throws but Dowell bettered that with a bomb from downtown. Free throws by Solomon and Kirksay fixed the halftime score at 29-40.

Satoransky sank a step-back jumper, igniting an 8-0 run in which Kirksay had 5 points to get Cajasol within 36-40 right after the break. Solomon shined with a six-meter jumper but a big triple by Ivanov and a jumper by Davis brought the hosts as close as 41-42. Kirksay - who else? - scored down low to complete his team's comeback, 43-42. Clancy scored off a Hapoel timeout and Ohayon nailed a triple to give the guests some fresh air at 43-47. Satoransky joined the three-point shootout but a dunk by Randle and a jumper by Solomon kept the guests ahead, 46-51. Urtasun struck from downtown but a running jumper by Ohayon and another triple by Solomon boosted Hapoel's margin to 49-57. A driving layup by Satoransky got Cajasol within 51-57 after 30 minutes. Rich and Kirksay traded layups early in the fourth quarter and Solomon beat the hosts' zone defense with a bomb from downtown. Satoransky tried to change things with back-to-back baskets and Katelynas dunked it to send the crowd to their feet at 59-62. Clancy and Kirksay scored in penetration and free throws by Triguero got Cajasol within 63-65. Kirksay took over with a floating jumper but Rich restored a 65-67 Hapoel lead with over 3 minutes left. Clancy scored down low and Randle added free throws but Urtasun took over in crunch time with 7 points, including a triple for a 72-73 Cajasol deficit with 25.3 seconds left. Rich scored off a steal and split free throws to seal the outcome in the final 11 seconds.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Sevilla
"We have to get used to playing very hard games on Sundays and Tuesdays. Hapoel Jerusalem is a Eurocup champion team; we had 17 turnovers and only 7 steals. Some Cajasol players did not play good games and they know it. We have to find the way to avoid mistakes and to compite to reach the Last 16."
KATTASH, ODED
Hapoel Jerusalem
"It was an incredible win, an excellent win. We played a great game; my players did great work. In the first quarter we played a great defense, but in the second quarter we didn't begin to play very well, so we had to react and we built a halftime lead of 11 points. In the second half, Cajasol had the opportunity, but we knew to keep our advantage. I'm proud of my players' reaction."

Players

KIRKSAY, TARIQ
Cajasol Sevilla
“They played a good game and we had too many turnovers, and it’s very difficult to compete that way. We have to improve our play because the Eurocup is a very hard competition. Now, it’s necessary to work to win the next game in San Pablo and then we will fight for a win on the road”
SOLOMON, WILLIE
Hapoel Jerusalem
“It was a great win for us because we fought against a great opponent. We played good defense in the first half, but in the third quarter, Cajasol played its best and we were able to react. We have two wins and that is important for reaching the Last 16, especially against a Spanis League team.”
