THE TAKE

The third-highest scoring team in the Eurocup so far, Cajasol hosts a tough rival in Hapoel Jerusalem Tuesday night, in what should be an all out battle for first place in Group G. With both teams 1-0, the winner is assured the top position and a leg up in the battle to reach the Last 16. Head coach Joan Plaza’s men were impressive in their debut road win over CEZ Basketball Nymburk with a balanced attack and five men in double digit scoring figures. Still, veteran guard Louis Bullock remains the main go-to guy on offense, and his perimeter battle with the athletic Jason Rich should be the subplot of the game. Rich will be flanked by steady point guard Willie Solomon, who can manage the offense as well as lead it in the scoring department with his long-range shooting. Yuval Naimy and Yogev Ohayon give Jerusalem head coach Oded Kattash excellent options off the bench, while swingman Dion Dowell could spell Rich in defense on Bullock. Jerusalem also signed big man Amit Tamir to beef up a front line that already features plenty of muscle and shooting touch in Brian Randle at power forward and Sam Clancy down low. His low post duel with multiskilled Paul Davis should also entertain throughout. Guard Txemi Urtasun and forward Mindaugas Katelynas factors off the bench in Week 1. Hapoel Jerusalem became the only defeated team in Group G by edging Cajasol 72-76 in Seville, Spain on Tuesday. Hapoel leads Group G with a 2-0 record, with Cajasol and CEZ Nymburk right behind at 1-1. Willie Solomon led the winners with 26 points on 5-of-5 two-pointers and 4-of-8 triples. Sam Clancy added 16 points while Jason Rich had 11 for Hapoel. Tariq Kirksay led CCajasol with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Txemi Urtasun added 13 while Tomas Satoransky had 12 for the hosts. Solomon led a 1-16 run that allowed Hapoel to get a double-digit lead, 29-40, at halftime. Cajasol, led by an outstanding Kirksay, needed just 3 minutes to briefly regain the lead, 43-42, right after the break. Solomon, Clancy and Dion Dowell kept pacing Hapoel but Urtasun sparked a late rally that brought Cajasol as close as 72-83 with 25.3 seconds left. Rich scored off a critical steal and split free throws to lead Hapoel to a well-deserved road win.
