THE TAKE

More than a quarter-century after they met in back-to-back Euroleague finals, Armani Jeans Milano hosts Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv in a Group B encounter on Thursday night. The two teams were rivals when Milano beat out Maccabi for the European crowns in 1987 and 1988. Euroleague Basketball will use this opportunity to continue its celebration of 50 Years of European Club Basketball by honoring the two coaches from those Milano sides, Dan Peterson and Franco Casalini, as well as players from those teams Riccardo Pittis, Roberto Premier and Dino Meneghin. While some 30 seasons have passed since Maccabi lost those games, the current generation of Maccabi players have a reason for revenge after suffering one of the Israeli champs' worst defeats of the decade in Milano two seasons ago, 94-71. What's more is that Maccabi struggled that game without All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic, who sat out injured. The same Vujcic is also out now with a leg problem. Milano is flying high after stunning Aris TT Bank on the road last week for its first win of the season. Dusan Vukcevic scored 21 and Travis Watson grabbed 16 boards to lead Milano. Head coach Attilio Caja's new lineup with Melvin Booker at point guard and teenage forward Danilo Gallinari playing a big role has clicked and will now look to continue its success at home. Meanwhile Maccabi played 25 minutes of strong basketball at home before a fourth-quarter collapse saw Oded Kattash's men hold on for a 3-point win. This game should be an interesting one as the team's seem to have a number of similar players that match up well against one another. In the paint, Milano's rebounding king Watson goes against Marcus Fizer, while the athletic Ansu Sesay faces Terence Morris. Meanwhile Maccabi forward Lior Eliyahu and Omri Casspi have the skills to go against Gallinari. In the backourt, Booker faces Vonteego Cummings, while Vukcevic will look to get the best of Yotam Halperin. One area where Maccabi surely trumps Milano is in depth. While the hosts are without injured guard Massimo Bulleri, Tel Aviv counters with 11 players who can play meaningful minutes on any night. That could prove to be the key, especially if the game takes on a fast tempo, which Maccabi could try and force. However if the hosts can control the style and keep their starters on the floor as much as last week when the opening five played 176 of 200 minutes, Milano has every chance to improve to 2-4 and get right back into the race for a spot in the Top 16.

Quotes Head Coaches

CAJA, ATTILIO
AJ Milano
"This is a game with great prestige against one of the historic teams of European basketball. We are looking more confident after two victories away in a row, in Thessaloniki and Udine in the Italian League, and we have to prove to ourselves that we can continue this way. The hard work we are doing day by day is giving us great results and playing a great team like Maccabi is very exciting. They have a deep roster and many weapons, great athletes inside and talented players on the perimeter like Bynum, Sharp, Halperin or Bluthenthal: they're all very dangerous for us."
KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"Milano isn't a terrifying team. I think that if we play smart we can win there. Obviously a road game is a tougher one. At these levels your must come focused. They made some changes, and look better now, but they have a roster that enforces them to play in a certain style that we can handle. They played 40 minutes of zone defense in their win in Thessaloniki. I hope that against us they'll play less minutes of zone, because we can punish them on that zone. I think Milano and Le Mans will win more games in the future. For us we must win the game on Thursday because all the teams in the group will arrive there with a big desire to win. We must focus on ourselves and play our basketball, and then the wins will arrive, also on the road."

"We'll be facing a team with a great tradition, and it will be obviously hard throughout the 40 minutes. I expect my team to win and continue the streak we started in Thessaloniki, which is the result of our great work during practices. The last two victories gave us more confidence and we have to stop Maccabi to still hope for a qualification for the Top 16. I'll put all my energy on the floor for this."
HALPERIN, YOTAM
Maccabi Elite
"Milano is in a good period. They won their last two games, so for sure it won't be an easy game for us. So far we have not registered great results in the Euroleague, but we're ready and we know what we want to do. It's time for us to win on the road. The road is still long, and there are still a lot of tough games on the list. I believe we can show on the road as well that we can play well. I can't wait to get Tal and Nikola back on the team. Then everything will be much easier, but until then we must learn how to handle these games and collect the wins. It's never easy but certainly doable."
Terence Morris - Maccabi Elite Terrence Morris's follow-up basket with 4 seconds remaining lifted Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv to an 81-82 win over Armani Jeans Milano on Thursday night in Italy. The victory was Maccabi's first road win of the season and lifted the team's record to 4-2 and into a three-way tie for second place in Group B. Meanwhile Milano dropped to 1-5 and remains in sixth place in the group standings. Morris scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Israeli champs erased a 7-point deficit in the closing minutes. Milano led 76-69 with four minutes to go, but three-pointers by Yotam Halperin and Morris got Maccabi close again. Morris took a feed from Lior Eliyahu for a one-handed jam that put Maccabi on top, but Dusan Vukcevic fired back with a triple. Maccabi's defense fended off Melvin Booker to get the ball back with 12.5 seconds remaining. Will Bynum went to the basket and missed, but Morris was there with a follow-up to give Maccabi a valuable road win. Halperin 20 led Maccabi with 20 points and Esteban Batista added 11 points and 8 rebounds. Morris also grabbed 8 rebounds. Dusan Vukcevic and Danilo Gallinari posted 20 points apiece for Milano, while Travis Watson had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Gallinari also dished 6 assists.

Tipoff was delayed by several minutes following a brief ceremony to celebrate 50 Years of European Club Basketball by honoring players and coaches from Milano's 1987 and 1988 Euroleague title-winning sides. Milano won the opening tip, but Vonteego Cummings went-coast-to-coast for the first points after Booker missed from outside. Watson went inside for the hosts' first basket, but a Cummings triples and long basket put Maccabi in control. Gallinari picked up his second foul in less than three minutes and after Vukcevic and Marcus Fizer traded threes, David Bluthenthal drilled one from downtown to make it 8-15 and cause head coach Attilio Caja to use his first timeout. Watson and Vukcevic cut into the deficit with 2 free throws each and soon Gallinari added a basket-plus-foul. And when Vukcevic drilled a three, it capped a 10-2 run that gave Milano its first lead. The hosts continued to pull away after a technical foul on Maccabi head coach Oded Kattash gifted Gallinari 3 from the line and a Casey Shaw tip-in. Maccabi tied it on an Alex Garcia steal and layup, but Vukcevic made it 25-23 after 10 minutes.

Danilo Gallinari - AJ MilanoPietro Aradori scored in transition for Milano to open up the second period, but Batista's first basket tied the game at 27-27 and a Halperin three restored a Maccabi lead. Batista then soared for an offensive rebound that he converted into a basket-plus-foul. Vukcevic and Halperin traded triples, but a nice penetration by Gallinari kept Milano close. Watson added a free throw and the tied the game at 37-37 with a power dunk. Omri Casspi converted a reverse layup and then fed Batista for a bucket, but Mindaugas Katelynas and Gallinari came right back and hit three-pointers for a 43-41 Milano lead. After a Maccabi timeout, Halperin sniped a three from the corner and after a Booker basket, Bluthenthal also hit from downtown to give the visitors a 45-47 halftime advantage.

Eliyahu scored inside to open the second half, but Gallinari answered from beyond the arc. Eliyahu continued his strong start to the second half with two more baskets however Watson scored inside and Gallinari added a free throw to keep Milano close. Watson remained perfect from the field as he tied the score at 55-55 midway through the third period. Gallinari went to the basket and came back with 2 points and Ansu Sesay added free throws. Soon Booker drilled a triple to cap an 11-0 run that gave the hosts their biggest lead, 62-55. Batista ended the Maccabi drought with an offensive rebound and a slam, but a Booker jumper kept the hosts in control. Derrick Sharp's three with 10 seconds left in the period helped Maccabi get back to 64-61 heading into the fourth quarter.

Morris's short jumper got Maccabi going and his baseline jumper put the visitors up 1. Morris remained hot when he corrected Garcia's miss for a slam as Milano took a timeout. Milano went for a safe basket inside from Watson and a minute later he tied the score at 67-67 from the line. Bynum penetrated for a score, but Gallinari bettered him with a three-pointer. Maccabi lost an outside shooter when Bluthenthal fouled out and Vukcevic padded the Milano lead with a layup. Shaw made it 74-69 midway through the period with an offensive rebound and basket. Booker extended the lead even further before Halperin finally answered with a three. After Vukcevic free throws, Morris popped a three from the top of the key and then Cummings fed Halperin for a basket in transition to bring Maccabi within 78-77 with two minutes remaining. After Watson missed a jumper, Eliyahu fed Morris for a one-handed jam that put Maccabi on top, but Vukcevic fired back with a triple. Watson helped Milano kill the clock with a clutch offensive rebound. After forcing Booker into a pair of missed shots, Maccabi had the ball with 12.5 seconds remaining. Bynum went to the basket and missed, but Morris was there with a follow-up to give Maccabi a valuable road win.

Head Coaches

CAJA, ATTILIO
AJ Milano
"Congratulations to Maccabi, but I think that we have played a good game, with great intensity. I am satisfied with our defense in the last two quarters, but we had a lot of problems with their offensive rebounds, and they punished us at the end. We were in the last minutes, especially with Vukcevic and Booker, who played too many minutes. But we have to be proud, because we showed that we can be competitive against anyone in the Euroleague."
KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"We were happy tonight, because when you win by 1 point you have to be lucky. We didn't played well, while we came off two good games in Euroleague, so I am not satisfied by what I saw on the floor. We had a lot of pressure on us, because to reach our goals we have to win every time, even on the road, so that was maybe a problem for us tonight. We have too many turnovers, and if we want to reach the Final Four we have to play better than tonight."

Players

GALLINARI, DANILO
AJ Milano
"We played a good game for sure, and showed that we are a better team compared to the first games. It's hard to lose a game like this, but we have to be focused for the next game. I think that we still have to believe in the Top 16, but every player in the team has to find in himself the concentration for all the games. I liked the mentality of my team in this game, we lacked some luck in the last quarter on some key shots to win, but also we don't have to forget the mistakes we made in defense, especially in the first half."
MORRIS, TERENCE
Maccabi Elite
"Winning a game like this on the road will give us more confidence, as we finally won a game out of Nokia Arena. We are finding the good chemistry between the guys that were here last season and players like me to improve together and be effective. It's only about translating on the court all the work we make during the practices. The key for us will be to stay together and work together, because we have a lot of experienced and talented players on the team."
BYNUM, WILL
Maccabi Elite
"That was a great win for us even if we didn't play as well as the last games, but it's always tough to win on the road. We are definitely working to rebuild a winning team and I think that at the end we'll be fine. We are trying to be consistent every time. I think that our defense in the last quarter was the key to getting back in the game after the problems we had in the final minutes of third quarter. We are working to lead our group and then be ready for the Top 16."
