THE TAKE

Unics Kazan receives Hemforam Vrsac on Tuesday for the second leg of the teams' ULEB Cup eighthfinals series. The hosts are the overwhelming favorite after building a 17-point advantage two weeks ago in the game in Serbia. Saulius Stombergas scored 21 to lead Kazan to a 73-90 win in that game. Unics has already a foot in the next round and must remain focused on this match to move on to the quarterfinals, where it will face the winners of the contest between Montepaschi and PAOK Thessaloniki. By scoring 89.6 points per game in the regular season and breaking the 100-point barrier three times, Unics proved it was the best offensive team in the competition. They added to their amazing arsenal by adding Jerry McCullough in time for the elimination rounds. Rock-solid inside with the Lavrinovic brothers, Darjus and Ksistof, who combined for 26 points and 12 rebounds in the first match, Unics can also light it up from outside with Stombergas, Sergei Chikalkin and Jarod Stevenson. Hemofarm will face a very difficult task against a team that lost at home just one time in 11 ULEB Cup games played – in the 2005-06 eighthfinals against Lottomatica Roma. The visiting side must play its best defense to try and stop the Russian storm, while improving its three-point shooting as well after making just 28.5% last time. Despite the addition of Vanja Plisnic, who scored 13 points, and Aleksej Nesovic, in time for the elimination rounds, Hemofarm, which has reached the semifinals in each of the past two seasons, looks set to check out of the competition earlier than ever.

Quotes Head Coaches

SIREIKA, ANTANAS
Unics Kazan
"I expect, that the game against Hemofarm will be very close and very difficult. You know, it is a playoff series, where each team wants to win so much and can jump over its head. I am sure, we must forget about the +17 in the resulting score of the first game and start playing from the very beginning. Otherwise, our opponent can arrange surprises. Hemofarm is a young, experienced team, which is apt for competing with strong rivals. To see this can have a look at its results in the Adriatic League."
NIKOLIC, MIROSLAV
Hemofarm
"Even if we beat Unics in Vrsac we would be outsider before the rematch. But Unics beat us by 17 points and our success in Kazan would be a kind of a miracle. Honestly speaking we are going to play game and to congratulate the better contender wishing them all the best in the ULEB Cup this season. I am sure Unics is one of the best teams in that competition and nobody would be surprised if they won the trophy. My team is so tired because we are playing for weeks with only six or seven players due to injuries of Bakic, Vukosavljevic and Joksimovic. Some of them are on the way to be back on the court and we have to concentrate on the Adriatic League and the domestic championship. We made our first goal - to reach the ULEB Cup second phase."

Players

Jarod Stevenson - Unics Kazan Unics cruised to the ULEB Cup quarterfinals with a 95-64 victory over visiting Hemofarm Vrsac on Tuesday, in Kazan, Russia. Unics swept the teams' two-leg eighthfinals series after winning the first game in Serbia by 17 points. Unics will face the winner of the tie between Montepaschi Siena and PAOK Thessaloniki in the next stage. Jarod Stevenson drilled 4-of-7 from downtown and made 6-of-8 two-pointers on his way to 24 points for the hosts. Dusko Savanovic added 11 points and 6 rebounds, Jerry McCullough had 10 points, 4 steals, and 4 assists, while Yegor Mescheryakov and Saulius Stombergas posted 9 apiece and Ksistof Lavrinovic pulled down 9 boards. Vanja Plisnic tallied 26 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks for Hemofarm, while Velimir Radinovic and Marko Simonovic scored 9 each. Hemorarm was in the game briefly, but Stevenson scored 7 straight to give Unica a 23-17 lead after 10 minutes and the hosts continued to pull away from that point till the final buzzer.

Stevenson opened fire for the hosts from downtown and Meshcheryakov soon boosted his side to 5-1, but Radinovic and Plisnic quickly tied the score at 5-5. The visitors showed themselves to be focused, as Plisnic answered Savanovic's bomb to get them within 8-7. Then Radinovic and Stevenson exchanged jumpers, before Predrag Suput's mid-range jumper followed by a three-point-play converted by Plisnic pushed the visitors in front 12-14. However McCullough was perfect from the foul line to tie the score at 14-14. The lead changed hands four more times in the last two minutes before Unics ended the first quarter with a 7-point Stevenson blitz to go ahead 23-17. Radinovic tried to fuel Hemofarm, but Stevenson was still hot and scored another jumper to maintain a 25-19 cushion. Sergey Chikalkin stepped up for Kazan by nailing a triple, copied few seconds later by Hemofarm's Milos Borisov, to make it 28-22. Miljan Rakic kept the guests in the picture by answering Petr Samoylenko and Savanovic to make it 32-25 midway through the period. Dmitry Sokolov took the honors of pushing the lead into double digits by converting an offensive rebound to made it 36-26. Saulius Stombergas extended the difference to 39-26 from eight meters, Plisnic reduced the gap to 43-33, but McCullough had the last word before halftime, to give Unics a comfortable 49-34 advantage.

Miljan Rakic - Hemofarm Back from the locker rooms, it was again Stevenson who boosted the hosts, highlighting a 13-2 run with a long-distance shot and a slam to make it 62-36 after 4 minutes. Unics continued to push while the frustration on Hemofarm players grew as their hopes of qualification reduced to zero. Lavrinovic scored an easy layup and after Mescheryakov and Plisnic exchanged triples, an unstoppable Stevenson posted his fourth three-pointer as the advantage rose to over 30 points, 75-43. Simonovic and McCullough fixed it at 77-47 at the end of the third quarter. Plisnic was still fighting early in the last quarter, and with 7 consecutive points brought Hemofarm within 81-57, but Chikalkin sealed the final score at 95-64 as Unics took another step on the Road to Charleroi.

Head Coaches

SIREIKA, ANTANAS
Unics Kazan
"I'm pretty satisfied with the game. I'm pleased that my team has managed to play effectively and show good basketball. The most difficult thing was to make the players play against the opponent, whom they had won by 17. I'm really glad, that the guys have treated the game seriously and showed that they can compete with any rival."
NIKOLIC, MIROSLAV
Hemofarm
"The two matches we had against Unics were similar so as both times we had 3 or 4 players injured and both times we lost, though in my opinion, in Belgrade we played better than today, and the game itself turned to be more serious for us. Before this second game in Kazan we had to play two games in the Cup of Serbia against Partizan. No surprise, we were a bit tired here. We let Topic not take part in the match as we practically had no chances to advance. I would like to congratulate Unics for the victory and to thank the Kazanians for the hospitability. I will not be surprised in case that our rivals tonight will qualified to the final."
