THE TAKE

Maccabi Elite looks to bounce back from back-to-back Group B road defeats when it hosts Cibona Zagreb on Thursday at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel. Maccabi (6-5) can feel confident, having won 13 in a row at home, but must be wary of Cibona (5-6), which knows that its first road victory would be good enough for third place in the group. Maccabi's coach Neven Spahija knows Cibona quite well from having previously guided the club to a pair of Croatian League title. Moreover, Spahija and Maccabi's all-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic are familiar with Cibona players from their time with the Croatian national team. Cibona got the better of Maccabi when they met in Zagreb last November. Power forward Brent Wright had 22 points and 6 rebounds and swingman Chris Warren recorded a perfect shooting night on his way to 16 points as the Croatian champs prevailed 87-82. Cibona has undergone a new change in its backcourt just this week, releasing sixth man Jerry McCullough (9.4 ppg., 1.8 spg.) and signing Ivan Tomas, who may make his debut in Tel Aviv. Vujcic is the pillar of the Maccabi attack – he ranks second in the Euroleague in scoring (16.9 ppg.), fifth in assists (4.3 apg.) and sixth in rebounds (7.6 rpg.) and is the only player in the league ranked among the top 10 in those three categories. Vujcic's court presence creates plenty of opportunities for the team's other big men, Lior Eliyahu (11.5 ppg., 5.2 rpg.) and Jamie Arnold (8.6 ppg., 5 rpg.), as well as shooting forward Simas Jasitas (13.1 ppg., 54.3% 3FG). Cibona will need to work hard to get to Vujcic, with reserves Jurika Zuza and Luksa Andric needing to step up alongside Marton Bader and Wright (13.5 ppg., 7.7 rpg.). Maccabi has been less consistent on the perimeter, as Will Bynum (12.7 ppg.), whose 3.9 turnovers per game are the most in the league, and Yotam Halperin (8.2 ppg.), have had ups and downs. Veterans Derrick Sharp (10.5 ppg., 59.4% 3FG) and Tal Burstein bring leadership off the bench to steer Maccabi when things go wrong. That's something that Cibona's guards will look to make happen early, with Davor Kus (12.6 ppg., 2.8 apg.), Andrew Wisniewski (11.8 ppg.) and Warren (12.6 ppg., 5.1 rpg.) making up a strong and smart trio. Cibona will have a tough time if it can't get in Vujcic's way, but it could make Maccabi sweat if Kus or Wisniewski can shut Bynum down. Keep an eye on those matchups as these teams battle for third place in the group.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"Cibona is a very good team. There is more balance on the team than the team tht played last season. Nobody has been able to destroy them or beat them by a big margin from the very beginning of the season, so it's going to be a tough game. We know how to play basketball, we just need to play the same style for 40 minutes and not for 30 or 39. Now, when we are back in Nokia Arena, I hope we'll manage to do that. We think we are a better team. We are going to play tough from the first moment to the very last. I expect a very difficult game but we need to win this game."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
anzu"We started preparing for the Maccabi game, and watching their recent games, I think that tactically not much has changed. Compared with our first game in Zagreb, Burstein has brought some new things, and they are without Buford, but these changes are not crucial. I think this is not a good moment to travel to Tel Aviv, because they have lost two Euroleague games and one in the Israeli Cup, so I expect to see their total effort to stop the losing streak. Anyway, we are not travelling there to lose the game, and if we lose, I think each and every point is important because it is obvious that the struggle for the Top 16 will continue until the last minute of round 14. Our goal is to try to control the game and then we can hope for the best."

"We want to fix the impression we left last week in the last minutes in Badalona although we played well most of the game and still lost. Cibona is a tough opponent that gave trouble to many teams on the road. Most of their games are very close and we'll have to react to that. Every win now is important to get a better position for the Top 16 draw, so we must give everything we have from the very first moment of the game. Playing in Nokia Arena is always a great expereince. I hope our fans will put enough pressure on Cibona, and help us keep our perfect home record."
WARREN, CHRIS
Cibona
warr"In last two games, we played some quality defense, so we have to continue doing that. Maccabi probably has the best players in the whole league, but they have to prove it on the court each night that they go out on it. We gained some confidence with consecutive wins and we have a good atmosphere, so it is time to use the momentum and try to take the first road win. Maccabi is the favorite, but we will try hard."
Lior Elihayu - Maccabi Elite Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv turned back the clock with a classic performance in a 91-83 win over Cibona Zagreb on Thursday night at Nokia Arena to secure a berth in the Top 16. Maccabi received fantastic performances from three of its biggest stars left from the dynasty that won back-to-back Euroleague titles and reached another final in recent years. All-Euroleague center turned in 29 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks to lead the charge. Team captain Derrick Sharp was 4-of-6 from downtown on his way to 19 points and a career-high 5 steals. But it was Tal Burstein who stole the show in his first home game since suffering an Achilles injury last June. Burstein finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists without a single turnover in 31 minutes. Rookie Lior Eliyahu showed Maccabi has a future too with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Cibona seemed on the verge of taking its first road win of the season as it led by as many as 16 in the second quarter and took a 41-55 lead early in the third quarter. But Vujcic and Burstein keyed an 11-0 run to get back in the game, Burstein then tied the game for the first time and gave Maccabi the lead for good early in the fourth quarter as coach Neven Spahija's team won its 14th straight home game. Maccabi improved to 7-5, while Cibona dropped to 5-7. Chris Warren led Cibona with 23 points, Davor Kus added 19 points and 4 assists, Barisa Krasic fired in 15 and Andrew Wisniewsky scored all 11 of his points in the first half. Brent Wright grabbed 9 rebounds for Cibona, but shot 0-for-8 and finished with just 2 points.

Cibona won the opening tip and went up on Luksa Andric's three-pointer. It took a minute for Maccabi's response and it came when Will Bynum fed Eliyahu for a slam. Vujcic and Andric traded free throws before Bynum thrilled the crowd with an electrifying baseline drive and dunk over Andric. Cibona continued to look for Andric, who put Cibona up 7-8 from the line. Maccabi also played inside, with Vujcic setting Eliyahu up for another slam and then scoring a basket of his own to tie the game at 11-11 midway through the period. Kus's second triple of the day swung the lead back to the visitors and Warren added two from the line and Wisniewsky turned a Bynum turnover into an easy layup to make it 14-19. Maccabi took its first timeout and came back with a jumper from Sharp. Burstein was the next to check in, but that made no impression on Wisniewsky, whose three made it 16-24. Cibona remained in control as Kus sank a free throw to cap a 2-15 run that put Cibona up 11. Sharp fired in a three, but Brent Wright drew a foul on the offensive glass and ended the opening period with a pair of free throws for a 19-29 Cibona lead.

Davor Kus - CibonaWarren opened the second period with a triple, Krasic did the same and then Wisniewsky sliced through the Maccabi defense for 2 more to give Cibona its biggest lead of the game, 21-37. Vujcic looked to get Maccabi going, but Wisniewsky was always there for Cibona. A Burstein jumper ignited the crowd and Simas Jasaitas and Eliyahu cut the deficit to 9 from the line. Maccabi continued to surge and Jasaitas's fast break bucket caused Cibona coach Drazen Anzulovic to take a timeout. Krasic ended the Cibona drought with a three-pointer from the top of the key and Marin Rozic restored a 10-point Cibona lead with a minute left till halftime. Another Vujcic-to-Eliyahu slam was erased by Kus's jumper, but Sharp drew a foul while attempting a three and made three from the line for a 39-46 scoreline.

Cibona came out for the second half roaring as Kus drilled a pair of threes. Vujcic scored for Maccabi, but Warren rifled in a triple of his own for a 41-55 Cibona advantage. Though things weren't looking good for the home team, Vujcic and Burstein were completely unfased. Vujcic scored inside and then fed Eliyahu to trim the deficit to 10. Krasic drilled a triple, but Maccabi had its game rolling now. Vujcic's three-point play highlighted an 11-0 run as Maccabi closed the gap to 56-58. Krasic fired in another three, but Sharp answered from downtown and a minute later Burstein's triple tied the game at 62-62. Warren put Cibona back on top, but Yotam Halperin's steal and basket knotted the score once more. Krasic scored for Cibona, but Vujcic's hook beat the third quarter buzzer and tied the game at 66-66 after 30 minutes.

Burstein's free throws at the start of the fourth quarter gave Maccabi its first lead since the first quarter. Burstein then brought the crowd to its feet with a triple and Sharp's hustle on the other end – drawing an offensive foul from Warren – confirmed that the momentum was yellow-and-blue. Vujcic's next basket made it 73-66. Cibona's timeout changed nothing as Vujcic made and missed a free throw, Maccabi took the offensive rebound and Bursten fed Vujcic for 2 more and a 10-point lead for the hosts. Marin Rozic finally came through from downtown for Cibona, ending a 4-minute scoring drought. But Vujcic and Burstein continued to push Maccabi ahead. Warren drilled his third three of the night and added a jumper to keep Cibona in the picture at 80-74. A technical problem with the scoreboard caused a stop in play after which Sharp nailed a three from the corner with 3 minutes remaining. After Rozic missed a three for Cibona, Halperin corrected his own miss as the visiting team's chances started to disappear. Kus's free throws made it 78-85 with a minute-and-a-half left, but Sharp answered the call again from downtown to wrap up the outcome.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"I would like to congratulate my team for a great job. I'm so happy for Tal. I said all the time this team is too young to play at this level, and now I think we saw what it means for us. I can not tell you 100% he'll play in the future like that, but with him the team is different. There was a lot of pressure on us this week, and in the beginning of the game I saw the players feel the pressure. Cibona played an excellent first half. I told the players it will be very difficult for them to beat us only with shooting from outside. If Tal played like this in Badalona and Roma for sure we would have won."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"Congratulations to Maccabi for the win. In the first half we had control on defense and offense. We played like we wanted to play. I think Maccabi had a good result after the first half, considering the way we played. In the second half, especially when we lead by 13 points, we stopped to play in defense. Burstein and Sharp had many open shots from behind the arc. They took very good shots. If we want to play with Maccabi in Tel Aviv, we must play smart 40 minutes, and not only 20 minutes."

Players

BURSTEIN, TAL
Maccabi Elite
"I waited a long time for this moment. I congratulate all my teammates. We were all good. Nikola, Derrick, Simas. Personally it was a very good game for me, but it was very important for us to win to qualify to the Top16. It all starts in defense. Once we started to play aggressive, we started to run they couldn't keep their crazy shooting night."
WRIGHT, BRENT
Cibona
"We knew they lost two games in a row, so they'll come ready for this game. We played well in the first half, but in the second we didn't pass the ball well and didn't play hard enough on defense, and they used that to take over the game and get the win."
