THE TAKE

Olympiacos hosts LeMans Sarthe Basket on Thursday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece for a Group A clash that both teams need in the race for Top 16 spots. Though Olympiacos (8-2) has already assured itself a berth in the next stage, it is still chasing group leader Tau Ceramica for first place and in contention with Winterthur Barcelona of Group C for the best second-place teams, either of which will grant coach Pini Gershon's side a No. 1 seed for the Top 16 draw. LeMans (3-7) on the other hand sits in sixth place in the group and is currently one victory awy from fifth place, the last spot that guarantees a ticket to the Top 16. Olympiacos has won its last two games and four of its last five. In fact, the Reds are undefeated in their last five home games and have won 12 of their last 13 in Piraeus. LeMans has dropped four decisions in a row, but has recorded a pair of tough wins on the road this season. Olympiacos had a tough time winning 81-88 when these teams met earlier this season in France, with Scoonie Penn and Alex Acker leading the way with 26 and 21 points, respectively. Point guard Penn (13.4 ppg., 3.7 apg.) and swingman Acker (16.3 ppg., 7.2 rpg., 2.4 spg.) are joined by big Andrija Zizic (15.3 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) to form a triple-threat for the Reds. LeMans's strength is in its frontcourt, with forwards Kenny Gregory (16.6 ppg., 5.6 rpg.), Eric Campbell (13.6ppg., 7.8 rpg.) and center Sandro Nicevic (12.7 ppg., 5.6 rpg., 1.1 bpg.). The matchup at small forward between Gregory and Acker promises some highlights, but it may not be the most important one. The play of Tyson Wheeler (3.4 apg.), Pape-Philippe Amagou and Yannick Bokolo (3.3 apg.) on Penn could be where LeMans looks to get in the game. However, the visitors may need some of that defensive presence to help shooting guard Nebojsa Bogavac (9.7 ppg.) against Olympiacos's Henry Domercant (11.9 ppg.) and Manolis Papamakarios, who figures to get more minutes now since the release of Damir Mulaomerovic by the Reds. One area where Olympiacos will look to assert its strength is in the paint, where Zizic, Ryan Stack, Giannis Bourousis (8 ppg.) and Sofoklis Schortsanitis hope to overpower Nicevic and his backup, Alain Koffi. Easy it won't be, but the young and determined group from LeMans will surely come out fearless and looking to score the big upset. And if the visitors can keep up with the Reds - the top rebounding team in the league with 37.1 per contest - on the boards, they may have a pretty good chance.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"I don't think there is much to say. We simply have to win this game like we try to do every week. We started the New Year with two road wins and now we have to continue successfully at home. Starting from Le Mans, we have four home games in a row including the Euroleague and the Greek League, and our goal is to win all of them. We prepare every game very carefully, so our mind is focused on Le Mans. Don't forget that this team beat Efes Pilsen in Istanbul. That means they have great potential and they showed it in our first game in France. Our mission is not easy and definitely we have to give our best on the court."
COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We know that Olympiacos has not yet lost at home and that they usually win by a lot. Playing against a team that has developed such confidence at home, we’ll have to disrupt their rhythm in attack. Also, we must lose fewer balls than we have done previously, in order to reduce easy points opportunities for Olympiacos."

Players

BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"Basically, the French team has nothing to lose. At the same time, if they manage to beat us on our home court, they will stay alive in the chase for qualification. Le Mans is a combination of a young and talented team, which is completed by experienced players like Sandro Nicevic. It is nice that I will have to face him again, but I have to tell him that we are going to make him sad. Game after game, we seem to get better as a team and this is what we will try to confirm on Thursday. Apart from the victory, we want to play even better than in our two previous games."
BOKOLO, YANNICK
Le Mans
"For sure, we’re not going there as the favorite. Whatever, this is basketball, and we’re going there aiming at returning home with a good result. Their status, their importance in Group A, mustn’t prevent us from playing hard. We respect them, but we’re not supposed to simply watch them play. We must not attach importance to statistics, but rather optimize our chances of victory."
Andrija Zizic - Olympiacos Olympiacos survived a major scare at home to remain in the hunt for first place in Group A when it turned back visiting Le Mans 80-76 in a thriller on Thursday in Athens. Olympiacos raised its record to 9-2, a single victory behind first-place Tau Ceramica, while Le Mans fell to 3-8, endangering its Top 16 chances. It was not for lack of trying by the guests, who never backed down and held their share of leads throughout the game, the last at 71-72 in the next-to-last minute. That however, was when Alex Acker was in the process of scoring 6 points in under 45 seconds, with his last jumper putting the Reds in front to stay thanks to late free throws by Henry Domercant and Panagiotis Vasilopoulos. Domercant led the Reds with 17 points while Andrija Zizic added 16. Le Mans was led by Tyson Wheeler with 20 points and 9 assists, while Eric Campbell added 20 and Sandro Nicevic 13.

The game got underway with Olympiacos bursting in front 6-0 thanks to a couple of baskets by Zizic. Le Mans came out empty, missing its first 5 shots until Nicevic finally got the guests on the scoreboard with a jumper. But when Ryan Stack knocked down a dunk and Penn slashed to the basket, the hosts had a 10-4 lead. Wheeler then loaded his gun and with 6 consecutive points pulled Le Mans within 12-10. Henry Domercant split a pair of free throws and then Wheeler fed Eric Campbell who converted a three-point play and tied the game. Stack restored a 15-13 advantage for the Reds, but it disappeared as the unstoppable Wheeler poured in 5 more points for a 15-18 Le Mans lead. The Reds' defense was no threat and Le Mans was now in charge, so despite a three-pointer by center Giannis Bourousis, Le Mans held a 20-22 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Zizic opened the second quarter with a layup, but on the other end Campbell ruled with back-to-back dunks. When Yannick Bokolo drained a triple, the guests were ahead 26-29. Olympiacos could not find any rhythm offensively, being one-dimensional and dependent on Zizic, and soon Le Mans widened the margin to 28-35 behind a six-point eruption by Nicevic. Reds head coach Pini Gerhson was forced to call a timeout during which fan favorite Sofoklis Schortsanitis came off the bench. Zizic tried to shift the momentum on a basket and free throws, to which Schortsianitis soon added a basket underneath to pull the hosts within 34-35 and bring the crowd to its feet. It was Wheeler, though, who took the first half's last word, slashing for a layup that gave Le Mans a 35-37 advantage at intermission.

Tyson Wheeler - OlympiacosOlympiacos started the second half determined to push the tempo and rushed ahead behind a dunk by Zizic. Domercant picked up the scoring slack, nailing a triple and scoring on the fourth assist by Zizic to keep the Reds in front, 44-42. Le Mans anchored its offensive plays in the paint, where Campbell and Nicevic created havoc, and went on a 4-8 run that silenced the boisterous Olympiacos fans. At that point, the frontcourt tandem of the guests had already contributed 27 points by making 12 of their 16 shots. A fan disturbance delayed the game at that point. Eventually, the atmosphere cleared and the game got underway with Pape-Philippe Amagou converting 3 free throws. Schortsianitis retorted with a monstrous dunk, yet Wheeler ignited a 0-7 spurt that Amagou punctuated from beyond the arc, as Le Mans grabbed a 56-60 lead after three quarters.

At the outset of the fourth quarter, Domercant stole the ball from Amagou and finished the break with authority. Kenny Gregory answered back, yet Domercant again drilled a three-pointer and captain Manolis Papamakarios scored to put the Reds ahead, 63-62. Over the next 2 minutes, Olympiacos was held scoreless and Le Mans vaulted ahead, 63-68, as Wheeler and Nebojsa Bogavac caught fire from downtown. After a timeout, Stack buried a jumper for Olympiacos, while Gregory's turnover led to a basket by Papamakarios that made it a one-point game, 67-68. Wheeler contributed yet another assist, finding Campbell for a dunk, yet Alex Acker came up big when it mattered the most. He started with a steal and continued by scoring 6 points in an inspired 8-2 run that vaulted the Reds in front, 75-72, with 1 minute left. Le Mans coach Vincent Collet called for a timeout. Wheeler flashed his way to the basket for 2 poitns, while at the other end Scoonie Penn made only 1 of 2 free throws. Wheeler, though clearly the man of the match, failed to tie the game with his last shot attempt, and the guests chose to put Panagiotis Vasilopoulos on the foul line. He hit both free throws for a 78-74 advantage, and though Campbell scored a bucket off an offensive rebound, Le Mans could not escape with a priceless away victory, as Domercant made 2 more free throws to seal the win for the Reds.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"We lost our tempo and concentration when the game was interrupted (due to some incidents), but we played good defense for 30 minutes and survived. Before the game I told my players that we had three main goals: to win the match, to make few turnovers and to grab more rebounds than Le Mans, which is the best Euroleague team in this statistic category. I think that the 4-point margin is not fair, since we deserved to have a more comfortable win, but we missed easy shots and layups, something I cannot explain. But I understand that the team has a lot of pressure."
COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We played good in both games versus Olympiacos, but unfortunately we didn’t win. In Le Mans we were leading by 14 points and tonight we controlled the whole game, but we failed twice to go all the way. Olympiacos took advantage of our bad defense in the last minutes and more experience that they have. Anyway I would like to see again the block shot made by Bouroussis on Nicevic, when the current score was 73-72."

Players

PAPAMAKARIOS, MANOLIS
Olympiacos
"We played smart in the critical moments and we have survived thanks to our defense. Since we had difficulties in offense, we tried to perform good defense and finally we did it."
DOMERCANT, HENRY
Olympiacos
"It was a difficult game and we knew that it would be like this. Le Mans is a team that plays the same style like we do, so we had to try hard and pay a lot of attention to win. We emphasized on defense and kept our concentration in the last crucial minutes."
